Nutritional evaluation of gynecologic cancer patients during initial diagnosis of their disease

Ninety-seven gynecologic cancer patients received a thorough nutritional assessment during the initial evaluation of their disease. Patients with Stages III and IV ovarian cancer were shown to have severe protein-calorie malnutrition (p < 0.01) unrelated to any gastrointestinal obstruction or laparotomies. Patients with other types of gynecologic cancers at all stages demonstrated nearly normal nutritional assessment parameters, with the exception of recent weight loss. Nutritional assessment and active nutritional intervention therapy are suggested especially for patients with advanced ovarian cancer.     

Lack of association between contraceptive usage and congenital malformations in offspring

Previous reports have linked the use of oral contraceptives and spermicides to the occurrence of malformations in offspring. With information from 12,440 women interviewed during the delivery hospitalization we found no relationship between contraceptive method and the occurrence of malformations. Whereas any unnecessary drug should be avoided during pregnancy, prior contraceptive method seems to be unrelated to the risk of congenital malformations.     

Occurrence of acute monocytic leukemia in a case of untreated Waldenström's macroglobulinemia

Acute myeloid leukemia is a rare complication of untreated Waldenstr?m's macroglobulinemia. Although two such cases have been reported, occurrence of acute monocytic leukemia, FAB M5b subtype, in a patient with untreated Waldenstr?m's macroglobulinemia has not been reported. The patient had distinct foci with clear demarcation of lymphoid infiltrates and myeloid infiltrates in the bone marrow, representing Waldenstr?m's macroglobulinemia and acute monocytic leukemia, indicating the concurrence of two primary malignancies.     

Insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 induces early apoptosis in malignant prostate cancer cells and inhibits tumor formation in vivo

BACKGROUND: Insulin-like growth factor binding protein (IGFBP-3) levels are significantly reduced in malignant prostate epithelial cells. In this study, we evaluated the role of endogenous IGFBP-3 on prostate cancer cell growth and tumorigenesis. METHODS: IGFBP-3 was re-expressed by stable transfection of human IGFBP-3 cDNA in a model of human prostate cancer, M12, a malignant subline in which IGFBP-3 levels are undetectable in comparison to the parent epithelial cell, P69. Effect of IGFBP-3 re-expression (M12-BP-3) on growth kinetics, morphology, propensity to apoptosis, and in vivo tumor formation were studied. RESULTS: M12-BP-3 cells secreted IGFBP-3 and growth arrested at a cell density that was threefold lower than control cells and this was associated with marked alteration in cell morphology. Control cells when grown in conditioned media secreted by M12-BP-3 also showed altered morphology compared to when cultured in IGFBP-3-immunodepleted conditioned media. The M12-BP-3 clones showed altered mitochondrial membrane potential, increased PARP cleavage, increase in sub-G1 peak, decreased levels of neuron specific enolase, and decreased tumor formation in athymic, nude mice. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that IGFBP-3 induces early apoptosis and has potential tumor suppressive effect in prostate cancer. Prostate 51: 141-152, 2002.

The discussion on the difference between the sexes received significant impulses from the formation of feminist theory. Masculinity was interpreted in a rather morally negative manner. Masculinity continuously endeavors to achieve reproduction and self-confirmation. Competitive pursuit of hegemony is the preeminent pattern by which masculine identity is formed. Male socialization leads to externalization, which impedes the development of communicative skills. Males tend to lead a high-risk life-style, which instrumentalizes their body. Symptoms are less often interpreted as warning signals, reflected in a significantly reduced life expectancy in comparison to females. In view of the specific male socialization, the Frankfurt concept of "men's health counseling" attempts to create a professional atmosphere in which men seeking advice are offered the opportunity to consult a specialist on all topics of men's health anonymously and, for the moment, free of charge.
