Clients of a methadone-maintenance clinic in Brooklyn, New York participating in a clinically-guided self-help (CGSH) program plus standard treatment (methadone maintenance plus individual counseling) demonstrated statistically significant changes in locus-of-control beliefs, from external to internal causation, about personal responsibility for drug misuse. Members of two control groups—one participating in a didactic lecture program plus standard treatment and the other receiving only standard treatment—failed to demonstrate similar changes. This increase in internal locus of control in the CGSH group suggests the potential efficacy of CGSH as a relapse-prevention therapeutic technique. 相似文献

ObjectiveThis study aimed to assess the effect of peer education on the quality of life and self-care behaviors of patients with myocardial infarction.MethodsIn this clinical trial, 70 patients with myocardial infarction meeting the inclusion criteria were assigned to experimental (n = 35) or control (n = 35) groups using block randomization. Patients in the intervention group received two one-hour training sessions on the third day after myocardial infarction during the CCU stay along with routine care. Education intervention was performed by peers. The control group will follow routine care. All patients selected were assessed using McNews' quality of life questionnaire and Miller self-care questionnaire, respectively before the intervention and also one month after discharge. Chi-square and t-test were used to analyze the data.ResultsAfter the intervention, the mean of quality of life and the mean score of self-care behaviors in the experimental group were significantly higher compared to the control group.ConclusionsAccording to the results, to improve the quality of life and promote the self-care behaviors in such patients, using peer education along with healthcare professionals is recommended.Practice ImplicationThis patient education approach had a significant impact on quality of life and self-care behavior. 相似文献

Peer educators (PEs) have a significant role in providing education on various health issues like smoking, alcohol, and other substance use. This study aimed to determine the experiences and opinions of PEs regarding a peer education program. Using the qualitative research method, data were collected from the study sample, which consisted of 23 student PEs, via semi-structured focus group discussions. Three main themes were developed: the Perceived Efficacy of Peer Education, Suggestions Regarding a Peer Education Program, and Contribution of the Peer Education Program to PEs. This study showed that peer educators thought peer education to be a highly effective method for the prevention of substance abuse. To improve the effectiveness of the program, it was recommended that it be started during middle school instead of high school, that families and local institutions be involved in the program, and that the students be directed to participate in arts, sports, and social activities. 相似文献

Abstract This article describes the incorporation of aging-related research into a medical school curriculum through a summer fellowship program. The geriatric office at a medical school designed the program to increase the research orientation and skills of undergraduate medical students and provide them with a mentoring experience in the field of geriatrics. A survey of students and preceptors participating in the program over an eleven-year period indicated a high level of acceptance of the program by both students and faculty. Students perceived applications from their fellowship experience for both their practice with the elderly and their critical thinking about issues related to older patients. The program served to stimulate interest in research and introduced undergraduate medical students to the research/scholar role of the physician. 相似文献

ObjectivesTo identify peer workers’ perceptions and experiences of barriers to implementation of peer worker roles in mental health services.DesignReview of qualitative and quantitative studies.Data sourcesA comprehensive electronic database search was conducted between October 2014 and December 2015 in PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, and PsycARTICLES. Additional articles were identified through handsearch.Review methodsAll articles were assessed on quality. A thematic analysis informed by a multi-level approach was adopted to identify and discuss the main themes in the individual studies. Reporting was in line with the ‘Enhancing transparency in reporting the synthesis of qualitative research’ statement.ResultsEighteen articles met the inclusion criteria. All studies adopted qualitative research methods, of which three studies used additional quantitative methods. Peer workers’ perceptions and experiences cover a range of themes including the lack of credibility of peer worker roles, professionals’ negative attitudes, tensions with service users, struggles with identity construction, cultural impediments, poor organizational arrangements, and inadequate overarching social and mental health policies.ConclusionsThis review can inform policy, practice and research from the unique perspective of peer workers. Mental health professionals and peer workers should enter into an alliance to address barriers in the integration of peer workers and to enhance quality of service delivery. IntroductionA systematic meta-analysis was conducted of the association between preference and popularity across childhood and adolescence. The role of development, sex, and region of the world were examined.MethodThe analysis was conducted on 135 samples including 136,014 participants. The samples were divided by age (upper grades primary school, k = 41; lower grades secondary school, k = 72; upper grades secondary school, k = 22) and region (North America, k = 54; Europe, k = 66; China, k = 10).ResultsAcross all samples, a moderate positive association between preference and popularity was found (r = 0.45). The association was significantly weaker in the upper grades of secondary school (r = 0.37) than in the lower grades of secondary school (r = 0.47) or the upper grades of primary school (r = 0.47). The association was weaker for girls (r = 0.26) than for boys (r = 0.38) in the upper grades of secondary school. The association was weaker in European samples (r = 0.41) than in those from North America (r = 0.50) and China (r = 0.57).ConclusionsThe results confirmed that preference and popularity are related but distinct dimensions of adolescent peer status. The association differed significantly by age, sex, and region of the world. Further research should examine additional factors that explain the variability in the association between preference and popularity. 相似文献

BackgroundThe aim of this study was to evaluate peer-to-peer facilitated student led mid-level fidelity simulation experiences.MethodsSecond and third year nursing students (N = 637) were invited to complete a 16-item 6-point Likert scale questionnaire after the simulation experience.ResultsStudents reported high self-confidence in their nursing skills (M = 4.14, SD = 0.92) and a high level of satisfaction in the learning they received during the peer-to-peer facilitated student led simulation experience (M = 4.42, SD = 0.93).ConclusionUsing peer-to-peer teaching strategies during student led simulation experience is an effective approach for ensuring active engagement of all learners during midlevel fidelity group-based simulations and has the potential for broad applicability. 相似文献
