The influence of systemic doxycycline on the number of surgically induced osteoclasts was studied in young albino rats. Forty Wistar rats, aged 50 d at the start of the experiments, were randomly assigned to two groups. The experimental group (20 animals) received 0.5 mg/ml doxycycline added to the drinking water. Mucoperiosteal flaps were raised on the palatal aspect of left maxillary molars in all animals. Two rats from each group were killed daily during a postoperative period of 10 d, and specimens were prepared for light microscopy. Cellular counts in serial sections of crestal bone indicated a delay of initial surface colonization of 2 d. Statistical analysis revealed a smaller number of osteoclasts in doxycyciine-treated animals as compared to control rats. In conclusion, systemic doxycycline suppresses recruitment of osteoclasts following surgery. 相似文献

Pill-induced esophagitis is a complication seen in patients who use certain medications such as tetracycline and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. In this short report, we described five cases of doxycycline-induced esophagitis with endoscopic images. All of the patients were young or middle-aged women. Dysphagia or odynophagia with retrosternal pain were the main presenting symptoms in all cases. The observed injuries were at the middle third of esophagus with a normal surrounding mucosa. All patients had a history of swallowing the capsule with a small amount of water or in a recumbent position. Two patients with dysphagia were managed by intravenous fluid support and parenteral acid suppression. The symptoms were improved in 2-7 days after the ceasing of the drug and control endoscopies were completely normal in all cases after 3-4 weeks of admission. The drug-induced esophagitis is not rare with certain drugs and should be suspected in all patients presenting with chest pain and dysphagia. Physicians must warn the patients to take the pills and capsules with enough liquid and in the upright position. 相似文献

The occurrence of subgingival enteric rods, yeasts and staphylococci (pre-treatment and post-treatment) was examined in 21 adult periodontitis patients receiving mechanical periodontal therapy and systemic doxycycline (200 mg on first day, then 100 mg/day for 20 days). Subgingival samples obtained prior to, and 2 weeks and 4 weeks after completion of the antibiotic therapy were transported in VMGA III and plated onto TSBV (for enteric rods and yeasts) and Staphylococcus 110 media. At baseline, small numbers of enteric rods (3 patients), yeasts (5 patients) and staphylococci (11 patients) were detected subgingivally. After the antibiotic therapy, more than 10-fold increases were seen in subgingival numbers of Enterobacter aerogenes (2 patients), Escherichia coli (1 patient), Candida albicans (2 patients), and staphylococci (11 patients). These findings demonstrating that systemic doxycycline therapy may result in at least temporary subgingival overgrowths of enteric rods, yeasts and staphylococci, may indicate the risk of frequent use of tetracycline in periodontal therapy. 相似文献

Lymphatic filariasis is a major cause of acute and chronic morbidity in 81 countries. The availability of safe treatment regimens along with rapid diagnostic tools resulted in a global program to eliminate the disease. The two main objectives of the global elimination program are to interrupt transmission of the parasites and to provide care for those with the disease. The strategy for transmission interruption is preventive chemotherapy through mass drug administration. This article reviews the current treatment regimens for lymphatic filariasis and discusses the challenges posed by co-endemicity with other diseases. The role of integrated vector management as a supplementary strategy for mass drug administration and new strategies for treatment and morbidity control through antibiotic targeting of the Wolbachia endosymbionts are also discussed. 相似文献

The management of malignant pleural effusions are a common, and sometimes difficult, therapeutic problem. This article reviews the currently available sclerosing agents and discusses novel agents that show promise for the future. Talc, tetracycline and bleomycin are currently the most widely used agents but none is an ideal sclerosant and certain adverse effects are of concern. Novel agents, particularly transforming growth factor (TGF)-β2 and metalloproteinase inhibitors, are being investigated, and the increase in knowledge into the mechanisms of pleural fluid formation and pleurodesis will hopefully lead to the development of targeted therapy in the future. 相似文献

We investigated antimicrobial drug resistance in ocular Chlamydia trachomatis 18 months after 4 biannual communitywide distributions of antimicrobial drugs in a region of Ethiopia where ocular strains of C. trachomatis are highly endemic. The present investigation deals with the evaluation of antifilarial efficacy of liposome entrapped antiwolbachial antibiotics doxycycline and rifampicin (5 doses at 10?mg/kg, subcutaneously for 15 days) alone and/or in combination with standard filaricide diethylcarbamazine (DEC) against human lymphatic filariid Brugia malayi in rodent host Mastomys coucha. The delivery system maintained the sustained release of antibiotics up to 48?h and significantly (P?<?0.05) augmented the antifilarial potential of these antibiotics over their free administration. A combination of DEC with each entrapped antibiotics significantly (P<0.05) improved microfilaricidal efficacy, while marginal enhancement was noticed in adulticidal activity.
