This paper analyses the current standing of nursing within the wider United Kingdom (UK) higher education (HE) environment and considers the development of academic identity within the sector, introducing a technology mediated approach to professional learning and development. A community of practice (CoP) is a way of learning based on collaboration among peers. Individuals come together virtually or physically, with a common purpose, defined by knowledge rather than task [Wenger, E., 1998. Communities of Practice: Learning, Meaning and Identity, sixth ed. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge]. In 2008, a small team of academics at Glasgow Caledonian University, School of Nursing, Midwifery and Community Health created and implemented iCoP, a project undertaken to pilot an international CoP, where novices and expert academics collaborated to debate and discuss the complex transition from clinician to academic. Although not intended as a conventional research project, the developmental journey and emerging online discussion provide an insight into the collective thoughts and opinions of a multi-national group of novice academics. The article also highlights the key challenges, problems and limitations of working in an international online arena with professionals who traditionally work and thrive in a face to face, real time environment.  相似文献

There is a manpower crisis in academic radiology departments. These departments cannot sustain their academic missions from clinical revenues alone. Salaries can’ t be competitive with private practice, and the recruitment and retention of faculty members are compromised. The education of medical students, residents, and fellows and the clinical and basic research that sustains the specialty suffers. There is no simple remedy; academic departments need philanthropy from industry and private practice, more support from the government and the schools of medicine, and more efficient clinical practices. The future of our specialty is truly at stake. Academic departments are responsible for the great majority of training and technical innovation in the specialty. If academic departments cannot sustain their academic missions, the specialty of diagnostic radiology will certainly suffer.  相似文献

The effect of on-base living on the academic achievement of self-care children was studied using 61 seventh grade students. Thirty three of these children lived on a military base while the remaining 28 children resided in a civilian community. Children who lived on the base scored significantly higher on the Sequential and Analytical subscales of an intelligence test than those who lived off the base. However, no statistically significant differences were found between the two groups on the Verbal, Memory, and Total IQ scores. The residence status #opon-base vs off-base#cp did not have significant effect on the academic achievement when measured by scores on Reading, Language, and Math subscales of California Achievement Test. Irrespective of the residence status, family configuration #opsingle vs two parents#cp, financial status, previous self-care experience, parental telephone contact with children when away, and gender had no statistically significant effect on the academic achievement of self-care children.  相似文献

This article reports on results derived from a quantitative research into the language proficiency of disadvantaged preschoolers within a Griqua community near Christiana in the Free State province (South Africa) with a population of approximately one hundred and fifty families. The learners' main language is a dialect of Afrikaans, but (to a lesser extent) they also speak Xhosa and Xhoi-San (two of the indigenous African languages), as well as non-standard English at home. Preschoolers from this settlement attend a preschool where standard Afrikaans and English are spoken (double medium preschool). The aim of this project was to determine the ways that limited language proficiency impact on learners' readiness for mathematics instruction, and to define the link between limited language proficiency and non-readiness for mathematics instruction at foundation phase. The results proved a link between limited language proficiency and non-readiness for foundation level mathematics instruction due to limited thinking skills, which constitute limited cognitive academic language proficiency. The concept cognitive academic language proficiency refers to those language skills that are essential to transcend ordinary social language. On average, children need between five and seven years to attain cognitive academic language proficiency of such a level that would support grade-level performance on academic tasks. The findings were utilized to construct and propose a programme for teaching mathematics to foundation level learners with limited language proficiency.  相似文献

目的:构建一种图书在线荐购新平台。方法:利用VBA编程对新书征订目录进行字段提取、分类等规范化处理,通过“问卷星”平台进行在线发布,建立馆配商、图书馆、读者之间的联动。结果:该方法能提高读者参与度,帮助馆员进行图书分类,增强读者荐购的反馈力度。结论:该方法成本低、效益高,值得推广。  相似文献

目的对2007-2010年中国疾病预防控制中心(疾控中心)性病艾滋病预防控制中心(性艾中心)发表的中英文论文进行统计分析,以揭示性艾中心的学术科研水平。方法统计2007-2010年疾控中心性艾中心发表的艾滋病研究的论文总量、第一作者的构成、被引用频次以及中文论文出自核心期刊比率和英文论文SCI收录比率;统计中英文论文的被引用情况和普赖斯指数。结果性艾中心在2007-2010年保持着相对稳定的发文数量,论文被引次数和每年篇均影响因子(IF)稳步增长。结论疾控中心性艾中心的学术和科研水平有一定提升,但是与国际先进水平相比还有一定的差距。  相似文献
