ObjectivePilates is used increasingly in a variety of clinical settings. However, there is lack of clarity in the literature as to what is meant by the term. Teachers incorporating apparatus based on the designs of Joseph Pilates (1883–1967) into their practice refer to themselves as Comprehensive Teachers, and this group divides itself further into Classical and Contemporary practice. The aim of this research was to explore the meanings of these terms with Comprehensive Teachers and to develop a framework that reflects current views and practice.MethodOnline international survey of Pilates Teachers through closed Facebook forums. Open questions were used to elicit views of the definition and practice of Pilates, and how standards should be set across the sector.ResultsOf 109 participants, 35% were based in the UK and 32% in the USA; 48% identified as Classical teachers, 32% as Contemporary, 5% as both and 15% as Matwork instructors. A thematic analysis of the qualitative data revealed agreement on the scope and content of Classical and Contemporary Comprehensive Pilates, however the discourse indicated there might be stereotyping about each other's practice. Classical teachers, for example, spoke of their own practice as authentic while Contemporary teachers used terms such as strict and inflexible for Classical practice. However, members of either group may incorporate both Classical and Contemporary approaches within their practice. We have designed a Pilates Teaching Framework to take into account the types of apparatus, the types of exercises and the order in which the exercises are executed.ConclusionsA framework that emphasises Pilates teaching rather than teacher practice is proposed for consistency and clarity when describing Pilates in professional and public contexts. 相似文献

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) demonstrate limited playfulness. Their difficulty engaging in meaningful interaction with others renders playful engagement in social interactions a challenge. Although little direct evidence exists regarding the promotion of these children’s playful engagement, links can be established with many traits cited in play and social interaction studies. This paper presents the results of a conceptual clarification exercise regarding the key behaviours associated with the construct of playful engagement in preschool-aged children with ASD. Behaviours were identified based on hallmark deficits in early social interactions and play of children with ASD. The analysis revealed the following behaviours: positive affect, engagement, imitation, joint attention, initiation of social interaction, social responsiveness, flexibility, child’s laughter in funny situations and giving and reading non-verbal cues. In conclusion, a conceptually coherent stage has been set for exploring the literature regarding interventions to promote the playful engagement of preschool-aged children with ASD. 相似文献

Hair shaft disorders, involving dysplastic abnormalities in the shaft, may be either congenital or acquired. Two large categories have been defined according to the presence or not of hair fragility. A diagnosis can usually be made after taking a thorough medical history and performing a physical examination. Trichoscopy has become a useful, cost-effective tool in recent years, particularly for examining the hair of children, because it facilitates inspection without removal of hairs. Structural abnormalities in the hair shaft are sometimes clues to the diagnosis of more complex diseases in which early treatment can improve prognosis. Disorders of sex development (DSD) occur in 1–2/10,000 live births, with a specific molecular diagnosis only possible in 20% of cases. Presentation is usually at birth, and gender assignment must be avoided before review by an expert multidisciplinary team. Initial investigations allow a working diagnosis to be made within 48 hr. In 46,XY DSD, surgery may be necessary to correct hypospadias, reposition or remove undescended testes, and remove symptomatic Müllerian remnants. In 46,XX DSD, feminizing surgery is performed less frequently than in the past, but genitoplasty may still be indicated. IntroductionTo disentangle the association between impulsive and compulsive behaviors (ICBs), health-related quality of life (HRQOL), satisfaction with life (SwL), and caregiver distress in dyads of people with Parkinson's disease (PwP) and caregivers.MethodsData used in this study were obtained from the ongoing Norwegian ParkWest study, a population-based longitudinal cohort study of the incidence, neurobiology and prognosis of PD in Western Norway. One hundred and one dyads of PwP free of dementia and their caregivers were included 5 years after PD diagnosis and inclusion in the ParkWest study. Standardized clinical rating scales were used to evaluate ICBs, HRQOL, SwL and caregiver distress.ResultsOf 101 PwP-caregiver dyads, self-reported ICBs were seen in 33% of PwP and only caregiver-reported ICBs in 12% of PwP. PwP-reported ICBs were associated with poorer HRQOL and SwL, whereas ICBs reported by caregivers only were associated with increased caregiver distress, but not poorer HRQOL or SwL in PwP.ConclusionsICBs have adverse effects on HRQOL, SwL and caregiver distress.
