The issue of suicide is still taboo in many cultures and the silence surrounding this problem is often destructive. Those affected by suicide have few opportunities to express their pain and their communities are left feeling helpless. The creative arts therapies have been used to address the emotions surrounding suicide, however few projects have studied the use of the arts to promote suicide awareness. Furthermore, there is a lack of multicultural research in this area. This article describes a two-day arts-based symposium that brought together members from diverse cultural communities including Inuit, Mohawk, Jewish, Christian, Baha’i, South-Asian Canadian, Senior and LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans-gendered, Queer) communities. Through drama, music, art-making and writing, participants explored this difficult subject, expressed complex feelings and shared their perspectives. An instrumental case study design was employed for this research project. The objectives were to gather information on participants’ experience of exploring the issue of suicide within an arts-based approach and to determine if cross-cultural themes would emerge. The findings indicate that using the arts helped to facilitate dialogue and communication and specific cross-cultural themes did emerge.  相似文献

This paper reports on a VicHealth-funded research project which aims to enhance the knowledge of community arts, a field of increasing importance in mental health promotion. The research explores social capital and social inclusion, which underpin the VicHealth Mental Health Promotion Framework (VicHealth, 2005a). The framework seeks intermediate outcomes in attainment of the social determinants of mental health, defined as social inclusion, freedom from discrimination and violence, and access to economic and social resources. The paper reports on early findings as measured by the instrument Most Significant Change in the evaluation of the community arts project, The Torch Project. Findings include the development of the social networks of participants and of trust and reciprocity between members of the project group.  相似文献

There is an emerging body of research focusing on the value of singing, as a leisure activity, for well-being and health and as a way to cope with life's stresses. Using grounded theory, semi-structured interviews were conducted with a community sample of 16 participants involved in a number of singing groups who had experienced an adverse life event. Results suggested that the singing group served multiple psychosocial functions, which are underpinned by both interpersonal and intrapersonal mechanisms. Group singing appeared to be a valuable coping strategy for people going through challenging times, and may also be beneficial for clinical populations.  相似文献

In the 1990s policy making in education in countries like Australia has been strongly influenced by the depressed economy and prolonged recession. This state of affairs has caused Governments to view education as a means to service the national economic interest. The result is that the arts subjects in the curriculum are clustered together and represent a diminished proportion of a crowded curriculum. Yet major curriculum theorists such as Eisner view the arts as a possible key to educational reform. Also, evidence shows that humans have always used the arts as a means of expression. The authors advocate for the right of children to have experience in each of the creative arts in the curriculum. Three starting points are suggested for including the arts in the basics of education.  相似文献

The co-founder of French Impressionism, Camille Pissarro, suffered from chronic dacryocystitis for at least fifteen years. This kept him from working for long periods of time, and when he was able to work, influenced his method of painting.
