BACKGROUND: Studies support the positive effects that Tai Chi has on the physical health of older adults. However, many older adults residing in long-term care facilities feel too weak to practice traditional Tai Chi, and a more simplified style is preferred. OBJECTIVE: To test the effects of a newly-developed, Simplified Tai-Chi Exercise Program (STEP) on the physical health of older adults who resided in long-term care facilities. DESIGN: A single group design with multiple time points: three pre-tests, one month apart; four post-tests at one month, two months, three months, and six months after intervention started. SETTINGS: Two 300-400 bed veteran homes in Taiwan. PARTICIPANTS: The 51 male older adults were recruited through convenience sampling, and 41 of them completed six-month study. Inclusion criteria included: (1) aged 65 and over; (2) no previous training in Tai Chi; (3) cognitively alert and had a score of at least eight on the Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire; (4) able to walk without assistance; and (5) had a Barthel Index score of 61 or higher. Participants who had dementia, were wheel-chair bound, or had severe or acute cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, or pulmonary illnesses were excluded. METHODS: The STEP was implemented three times a week, 50 min per session for six months. The outcome measures included cardio-respiratory function, blood pressure, balance, hand-grip strength, lower body flexibility, and physical health actualization. RESULTS: A drop in systolic blood pressure (p=.017) and diastolic blood pressure (p<.001) was detected six months after intervention started. Increase in hand-grip strength from pre to post intervention was found (left hand: p<.001; right hand: p=.035). Participants also had better lower body flexibility after practicing STEP (p=.038). CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that the STEP be incorporated as a floor activity in long-term care facilities to promote physical health of older adults.

Kate Phillips 《International Journal of Art Therapy》2019,24(1):21-29
The recent report from the United Kingdom (UK) All-Party Parliamentary Group on Arts, Health and Wellbeing is receiving widespread publicity across the media. Newspaper articles and social media posts espouse the benefits and importance of employing creative arts within the health domain, citing the report as proof of this. The report is inclusive of the entire range of arts practices, while its recommendations relate in the most part to UK policy and systems. The focus of this article is specific to visual arts practices and art therapy (art-for-health), but may have relevance across arts modalities and approaches (arts and health). This article questions the approach to the evidence taken in the report, and highlights the need for rigour, balance and impartiality in conducting research and presenting evidence. A case is made for the use of formal systematic reviews as appropriate ways to develop the evidence base. Another suggestion is a request for more explicit consideration of the ideological commitments underpinning beliefs about purpose and value within art therapy and the wider arts and health arena.

《Body, Movement and Dance in Psychotherapy: An International Journal for Theory, Research and Practice》2013,8(4):229-240
Drawing on a psychoanalytic framework, it is possible to understand how immersing the body in conflict within a martial art therapy can access both conscious and unconscious affect in relation to conflict. In a martial therapy, the body becomes responsible for the word. This is a positive option with which to access the psyche and the body to subjects whose relationship to ‘normal’ therapy may not be an option, especially in the case of troubled and problematic youths. This is a case for the promotion of therapies that work with and through the body by means of a bodily intervention but more significantly it is to reveal that a martial art carries a more primitive structure revealing a natural inclination towards fighting as a remedial structure and not necessarily an expression of destruction.

Objective. This study investigated the delivery of an arts based intervention to stroke patients and sought users' and professionals' views of any perceived benefits.
Setting. The study was undertaken on the stroke rehabilitation ward of a London teaching hospital.
Design. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 21 patients, 3 health care professionals and 5 reading service personnel. Observation sessions were carried out weekly for the 10-month duration of the project. Data were analysed using the Framework method.
Intervention. The reading service, run by Interact, a registered charity, aims to entertain, stimulate and engage patients. Readers are professional actors trained to work specifically with stroke patients. Interact provide a selection of reading materials or alternatively patients provide their own material.
Results. Participants' accounts suggested that the service met its aim of providing entertainment and stimulation. Additionally, there was some evidence that taking part in the reading service was associated with participants' emotional well being, the processes of adjusting to hospitalisation and to their engagement in rehabilitation therapies. Hospital staff acknowledged the service benefited patients with regard to spiritual, emotional/psychological needs. However they maintained that the service, as entertainment rather than therapy, was of minor importance.
Conclusion. This arts based intervention was welcomed by patients and seemed to address some needs not met in the current configuration of care. These findings suggest that interventions such as the reading service point to ways in which it is possible to enhance the rehabilitation environment and perhaps facilitate better outcomes for stroke patients.

This paper draws on a qualitative study that was undertaken as part of a national research study to assess the impact of participatory arts provision for people with mental health needs. It explores how arts and mental health projects may facilitate some of the key elements of what has been termed a 'recovery approach' in mental health. It is argued that it is precisely these elements--the fostering of hope, creating a sense of meaning and purpose, developing new coping mechanisms and rebuilding identities--which are hard to standardize and measure, yet may be the most profound and significant outcomes of participation in such projects. Therefore, in the context of a growing emphasis on recovery-orientated mental health services, while not necessarily being appropriate for all service users, arts and mental health initiatives could make an essential contribution to the future of mental health and social care provision.

Abstract This article presents a technique used by the author to stimulate the therapeutic imaginations of practitioners and persons living with HIV/AIDS in educational and clinical settings. Narrative responses to four visual case studies raise themes of intergenerational issues, coping with life-limiting illness, and caregiver burden allowing for enhancement of assessment and empathic skills. This method often leads to the generation of creative options and problem-solving possibilities. The technique is offered as a practice tool and readers are invited to submit responses, examples and images from their own experience.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of music therapy on compassion fatigue and team building of professional hospice workers. Participants were nurses, social workers, and chaplains and were employed for at least one year in hospice care. Seventeen participants engaged in one of two experimental music therapy groups. Experimental group 1 utilized an ecological music therapy approach with an open, free form without structure and encouraged participation in the live music experiences of instrumental improvisation as well as toning and chanting. Experimental group 2 utilized a didactic music therapy approach with a structured format wherein interventions were planned and facilitated by the music therapist a priori. Such interventions included guided meditation with live music, lyric analyses, and music and movement. To measure compassion fatigue, the Compassion Fatigue Scale (CFS) was used as a pre- and post-test measure in each group. To measure team building, the Team Building Questionnaire (TBQ) was used as a pre-and post-test measure in each group. Statistical analyses indicated a significant improvement in team building in both groups but no significant differences with regard to compassion fatigue. Further research studying the effects of music therapy on compassion fatigue and team building of professional hospice caregivers is recommended.
