Detection and Characterization of Hyperlipoproteinaemia in Middle-aged Men

Serum lipoprotein (LP) concentrations were determined and LP patterns were classified in 261 middle-aged men, recruited from a health examination survey, with serum lipid values above the 80th percentile of the same population. Individuals with hyperlipoproteinaemia (HLP) and normolipidaemic controls were characterized also regarding family history of cardiovascular disease, socio-economic factors and clinical and laboratory variables. Subjects with HLP type IV–V and IIB were overweight and showed hyperuricaemia and hyperinsulinaemia compared with normolipidaemic controls and subjects with HLP type IIA. The latter showed elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate. In spite of being overweight, subjects with HLP type III showed normal fasting values of insulin and uric acid in serum and normal early insulin response to intravenous glucose. The glucose tolerance did not differ significantly between the groups. Men with HLP types IV–V had predominantly sedentary occupations, in contrast to those with type IIA. There were significantly more smokers in the groups with HLP type IIB and IV–V than in the control group. Thus, individuals with different types of HLP tend to show different metabolic profiles but also different socioeconomic and clinical patterns, suggesting that exogenous factors are of importance in the expression of the LP abnormalities.     

Nitric oxide production of rat Leydig and Sertoli cells is stimulated by round spermatid factor(s)

In this study, we provide evidence of cell-to-cell interaction between rat germ cells and Leydig or Sertoli cells in relation to nitric oxide (NO) production and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) messenger RNA (mRNA) expression. As a result of being cultured in a round spermatid-conditioned medium (RSd-CM), NO production in both Leydig and Sertoli cells increased in proportion to the length of the culture period. iNOS mRNA expression in both types of cells also increased in a dose-dependent manner as a result of being cultured with RSd-CM. This increase was detected as early as 3 h and was maintained up to 24 h. In contrast, neither NO production nor iNOS mRNA increased in either type of cell following culture in a pachytene spermatocyte-conditioned medium (PS-CM). Our findings suggest that RSd may control NO production of Leydig and Sertoli cells. This cell-to-cell interaction may be an important mechanism of regulation of testicular function.

药物治疗一直是内耳病的首选方法,由于内耳与全身血液循环之间存在血 迷路屏障,药物进入内耳的剂量极为有限。内耳局部给药可以减小用药剂量与药物的不良反应,药物在内耳的作用效力也会提高。关于内耳局部给药的临床应用有鼓膜穿刺/经咽鼓管给药、经圆窗膜缓释/控释给药、内耳开窗给药,实验研究包括缓释药物制剂和控释给药装置的研究。作者对内耳局部给药的临床与实验研究进行综述,为更加微创、有效治疗疾病提供依据。     

Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor (DSRCT): an Unusual Intra-abdominal Tumor

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare intra-abdominal tumor commonly seen in adolescents and young adult males. It is an important differential diagnosis in these patients presenting with abdominal masses and/or GI obstruction. The management and prognosis improve if preoperative diagnosis can be established.     

Instability of Trinucleotidic Repeats During Chromatin Remodeling in Spermatids

Transient DNA breaks and evidence of DNA damage response have recently been reported during the chromatin remodeling process in haploid spermatids, creating a potential window of enhanced genetic instability. We used flow cytometry to achieve separation of differentiating spermatids into four highly purified populations using transgenic mice harboring 160 CAG repeats within exon 1 of the human Huntington disease gene (HTT). Trinucleotic repeat expansion was found to occur immediately following the chromatin remodeling steps, confirming the genetic instability of the process and pointing to the origin of paternal anticipation observed in some trinucleotidic repeats diseases.     

A rare inguinal mass: Round ligament leiomyoma

INTRODUCTIONLeiomyoma of the round ligament is a rare condition and usually appears like an inguinal hernia.PRESENTATION OF CASEWe report a case of a 40 year-old women found to have an inguinal mass which it was finally diagnosed as leiomyoma.The patient was admitted to our hospital with a history of painless groin mass. The mass was thought to be irreducible inguinal hernia. Surgical exploration demonstrated a round ligament leiomyoma.DISCUSSIONA smooth muscle tumor in the round ligament of the uterus in the inguinal region is a rare entity and can be mistaken for an irreducible inguinal hernia. It is a rare condition occurring predominantly in premenopausal middle-aged women. Abdominal, inguinal, and vulvar locations have been described. Surgical excision is the curative treatment.CONCLUSIONLeiomyoma of the round ligament should be entertained as a possible etiology of inguinal mass.     

Anatomic measurements of the posterior tympanum related to the round window vibroplasty in congenital aural atresia and stenosis patients

Conclusions With the aggravation of the external auditory canal malformation, the size of extra-niche fossa became smaller, providing concrete data and valuable information for the better design, selecting and safer implantation of the transducer in the area of round window niche. Three-dimensional measurements and assessments before surgery might be helpful for a safer surgical approach and implantation of a vibrant soundbridge.

Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate whether differences exist in the morphology of the posterior tympanum related to the round window vibroplasty among congenital aural atresia (CAA), congenital aural stenosis (CAS), and a normal control group, and to analyze its effect on the round window implantation of vibrant soundbridge.

Methods CT images of 10 normal subjects (20 ears), 27 CAS patients (30 ears), and 25 CAA patients (30 ears) were analyzed. The depth and the size of outside fossa of round window niche related to the round window vibroplasty (extra-niche fossa)and the distances between the center of round window niche and extra-niche fossa were calculated based on three-dimensional reconstruction using mimics software. Finally, the data were analyzed statistically.
