Summary The human fetal carotid body was studied using both histochemical and electron microscopic methods. The glomus cells of a mid term fetal carotid body evidently contain catecholamines. This was demonstrated both by formaldehyder-induced fluorescence of the cells and by the presence of typical dense-cored vesicles (diameter 1430–3200 Å) in the cytoplasm of the chief cells. The glomus cells were densely innervated and the synapses found on their surface were probably cholinergic in type, containing agranular synaptic vesicles measuring 400–700 Å in diameter with a few dense-cored vesicles measuring 900 to 1300 Å. Synapses were not found in any other cell type within the glomus caroticum. The prominent feature of the glomus cell cytoplasm was the presence of the dense-cored vesicles. The density of the vesicular core varied only slightly from cell to cell. There were no perceptible differences in vesicular size between the different cells. The glomus cells were mostly surrounded by the processes of the sustentacular cells, which usually also surrounded the capillary walls. No glomus cells were ever found in direct contact with the capillary wall. The capillaries were wide and very numerous over the restricted area of the organ. They formed sinusoidal loops, probably anastomosing with each other. Finally, the features of the fine structure are discussed, correlating the present findings with our knowledge about the adult functional carotic body.  相似文献

We report the interaction of RA and psychological factors over 2 years in a group of 89 patients with newly established disease. Short-time outcome regarding physical features was fairly good. Disease activity decreased, and disability evaluated by HAQ remained at a low level. Psychological distress as measured by the depression and anxiety subscales of SCL 90 (Symptom Check List) was not very pronounced and not related to disease state factors. A slight decrease of anxiety was recorded after 2 years. A new adjustment test was applied. It contained 13 items focused mainly on negative illness effects such as loss of independence, feelings of guilt, and change of social and leisure time activities. Three factors (regret of lost life values, dysphoric mood, and acceptance) explained 48% of the variance of the 13 items. The validity of the test was acceptable. The patients' degree of adjustment changed slowly or not at all during the 2 years.  相似文献

Distress and DNA repair in human lymphocytes   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
This research assessed differences in DNA repair in lymphocytes from high-and low-distressed individuals. A median split on Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) Scale 2 divided 28 newly admitted nonpsychotic psychiatric inpatients into high- and low-distress subgroups. The high-distress subgroup had significantly poorer DNA repair in lymphocytes exposed to X-irradiation than low-distress subjects. We also found that lymphocytes obtained from this psychiatric sample had significantly poorer DNA repair than lymphocytes from nonpsychiatric control subjects when compared 5 hr after X-irradiation. A high level of distress therefore appears to be associated with significant dysfunctional differences at the molecular level which may have important implications for health. These data provide evidence for a direct pathway through which distress could influence the incidence of cancer.This research was funded in part by General Molecular Applications, Inc., the Bremer Foundation, the Samuel J. Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) is a common condition in women that is difficult to diagnose. Although heritability estimates have been published for some conditions potentially underlying pelvic pain, the heritability of CPP itself has never been investigated. Using data from 623 MZ and 377 DZ female twin pairs aged 29–50 from an Australian twin cohort, we found an increased CPP concordance among MZs compared to DZs, with tetrachoric correlations of 0.43 (95% CI: 0.26–0.58) and 0.11 (95% CI: –0.16–0.38), respectively. This corresponded to a heritability of 0.41 (95% CI: 0.25–0.56). Lack of correlations with environmental indicators suggested that violation of the equal environments assumption was not responsible for this effect. Multivariate Cholesky decomposition models incorporating CPP and significantly correlated phenotypes showed that the entire CPP heritability could be explained by genetic variance underlying endometriosis (38%), dysmenorrhoea (23%), fibroids (24%), and somatic distress (15%), the latter a possible indicator of increased nociception. CPP itself is unlikely to be a useful independent phenotype to conduct genetic aetiological studies; contributing conditions such as endometriosis and variation in nociception are likely to provide more useful phenotypes.  相似文献

To determine the late gestational development of copper-zinc (CnZn) and manganese (Mn) superoxide dismutases (SOD) in human lung, immunohistochemical localization was performed for each SOD. The lung samples were taken from five aborted fetuses, four fetuses in which intrauterine death occurred, one full-term neonate, two premature infants with hyaline membrane disease and one premature infant with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Morphometry was performed, and the percent area of positive staining was computed. The bronchial epithelium was intensely stained from the early stages of gestation (i.e. 17 weeks), while the staining intensity for both CuZnSOD and MnSOD in the peripheral airways increased gradually during lung development. The mean percent area of the staining for CuZnSOD and MnSOD from 16 to 38 weeks was increased 30-fold and 8-fold, respectively, and further increases were observed postnatally. CuZnSOD staining was markedly decreased in lungs with respiratory disorders. However, proliferating type II pneumocytes were intensely stained for MnSOD in the BPD lungs, making the staining area 3-fold larger than that in the control lungs. These results clearly depict age-related increases in staining for both CuZnSOD and MnSOD and an alteration in SOD distribution associated with neonatal respiratory disorders.  相似文献

This study examined two groups of people who were pursuing treatment for obesity: either medical intervention (a hospital group; N = 20) or support for dietary restriction (a community group; N = 18). This study addressed four questions: (1) Were there differences between the two groups in terms of their psychological distress (as measured by the Symptom Checklist)? (2) Does binge eating moderate psychological distress? (3) Do feelings of ineffectiveness moderate psychological distress? and (4) Which variables best accounted for group membership (i.e., type of treatment sought)? Results suggested that the hospital group was significantly more distressed than the community group. However, there were no differences between the two groups with respect to binge eating or feelings of ineffectiveness. These findings suggest that it is the effects of morbid obesity that are most likely to moderate psychological distress.  相似文献

Summary The past decades have seen considerable shifts of emphasis in surgical care. The recognition that pus was not laudable, was followed by a realisation that not all complications were inevitable and that prophylaxis could effectively reduce the incidence of most common problems in the post-operative period. As anaesthesia has become safer, it has been possible to embark on more intricate and prolonged procedures and for sufficient time to be available to ensure adequate intraoperative care.These two phenomena have firstly increased the complexity of management in the post-operative period, and have brought this aspect of surgical care more obviously to the limelight. During prenatal life, the ductus arteriosus connects the left pulmonary artery and the descending aorta. Morphometric features (length, external diameter, volume) of the ductus arteriosus in 131 human fetuses (65 males, 66 females) were studied by means of anatomical, digital and statistical methods. Regression analysis was used to investigate the growth of the ductus arteriosus during gestation. The values of the length of the ductus arteriosus ranged from 3.95 mm for the 15 week gestational group to 12.20 mm for the 34th week of gestation. The length of the ductus arteriosus related to fetal age (x) increased according to the linear function y = -3.0726 + 0.4381x. The mean values of the diameter of the ductus arteriosus ranged from 1.34 to 3.49mm for the 15 and 34 week gestational groups, respectively. The growth of the ductus arteriosus diameter followed in accordance with the linear function y = 0.2072 + 0.0935x. The mean values of the ductus arteriosus volume ranged from 5.08 mm3 for the 15 week group to 117.30 mm3 of the 34 week gestation group. The volume growth increased according to the function y = 0.0007x3.3782. Positive correlation coefficients between arterial parameters and fetal age were statistically significant (P < or = 0.01) and reached the following values: r1 = 0.98 for Length, r2 = 0.90 for diameter and r3 = 0.94 for volume. Despite the increase in absolute diameter, the relative diameter of the ductus arteriosus (ductus arteriosus-to-aortic bulb diameter ratio) decreased from 0.80 to 0.48.  相似文献

目的通过对57例妊娠分别使用二维、三维超声测量相关参数估计胎重,并作统计学比较,从而评价三维超声对于估测胎儿体重、诊断胎儿发育迟缓及巨大胎的优势和价值。方法对2005年10月至2006年3月间在我院分娩的57例妊娠,研究组用三维超声测胎儿股容积估计胎重,对照组用二维超声同步测量相关参数估计胎重。结果对两组估重结果与胎儿实际出生体重作相关统计学分析,研究组相关系数为0.983,对照组为0.906(P〈0.05),前者与实际体重关系更密切。结论三维超声测量胎儿股容积估测胎儿体重,较传统二维超声具有更大优势,对于发现胎儿发育迟缓(FGR)及巨大胎意义重大,有利于指导临床冶疗、选择分娩方式。  相似文献

Summary The development of the neocortex has previously been extensively studied in carnivores (cat and ferret), rodents (rat and mouse) and primates (monkey and human). In these species, it has been shown that the initial population of cells migrating from the ventricular zone forms the primordial plexiform layer. This is subsequently split into marginal zone and subplate zone by the insertion of later-migrating cells into the primordial plexiform layer, to form the cortical plate proper. Many of the cells derived from the split primordial plexiform layer are transient. The neurons of the subplate zone are found in the deeper part of layer VI, and white matter deep to layer VI in the more mature cortex; most of these neurons disappear by adulthood. [3H]-thymidine labelling in the present study has shown a similar pattern of neocortical development in Artiodactyla (sheep). In addition it has been shown that the previously described staining of subplate and cortical plate cells for the fetal protein fetuin indicates that fetuin is a useful marker for a proportion of this transient population of neurons and defines its extent in neocortical development more clearly. Dividing cells were labelled by a single intra-amniotic injection of [3H]-thymidine at E26 to E35 (birth is at E150). The brains were subsequently examined at E40 or E80 for [3H]-thymidine labelling and fetuin staining by a combination of autoradiography and immunocytochemistry. The earliest generated neocortical cells detected in this study (E26) were found in two layers by E40, the outer marginal zone and inner subplate zone. Neurons of the marginal zone were generated up to E28; those of the early subplate zone were generated up to E31. The cortical plate proper was generated by cells born on E32 and later. This sequence is similar to that described in other species, especially the cat. A proportion of the early-generated neurons in the marginal zone, subplate zone and early cortical plate stained for fetuin. By E80 these earliest-generated, fetuin-positive cells were found in the white matter deep to the forming neocortical layers and in layer VI. In adult brains no fetuin-positive neurons could be identified in the neocortex, and neurons had almost entirely disappeared from the white matter. The fetal glycoprotein fetuin seems to be specifically associated with a population of cells that has the same developmental history as the transient marginal zone and subplate neurons described in other species. However, the distribution of fetuin-containing neurons is more extensive and includes some of the neurons within the cortical plate itself. Thus in addition to being a marker for a proportion of the transient marginal zone and subplate cells, the presence of fetuin in subplate and cortical plate neurons, given the trophic properties attributed to fetuin, may indicate its involvement in early stages of synaptogenesis and connectivity in the developing neocortex.  相似文献
