Relevance of mission statements in Flemish not-for-profit healthcare organizations

The aims of the study were to determine: (1) which components managers of Flemish not-for-profit healthcare organizations chose to incorporate in their mission statement, (2) how satisfied managers of Flemish not-for-profit healthcare organizations are with the formulation of various mission statement components and (3) if the managers of Flemish not-for-profit healthcare organizations subscribe the presumed positive relationship between mission statements and organizational performance. To address these research questions, a questionnaire was send to a convenience sample of Flemish not-for-profit healthcare managers and to a control group. The results indicate that Flemish not-for-profit healthcare managers do discriminate and differentiate between mission statement components and that they are not equally satisfied with the articulation of every component. Furthermore, Flemish not-for-profit healthcare managers do support the assumption that a well-written mission statement can produce a host of benefits. The mission statement is considered as an energy source, a guide in decision-making and to influence the managers' behaviour.

Challenges in setting up a potable water supply system in a United Nations peacekeeping mission: The South Sudan experience

Problem

A United Nations peacekeeping contingent was deployed in the conflict affected areas of South Sudan with inadequate environmental sanitation, lack of clean drinking water and a heightened risk of water-borne diseases. In the immediate post-deployment phase, the contingent-owned water purification system was pressed into service. However, laboratory analyses of processed water revealed its unsuitability for human consumption.

Approach

A systematic, sanitary survey was conducted to identify the shortcomings in the water supply system's ability to provide potable water. Under field conditions, the ‘H₂S method’ was used to detect faecal contamination of drinking water.

Local setting

The raw water from the only available source, the White Nile River, was highly turbid and contaminated by intestinal and other pathogens due to an unprotected watershed. Water sterilizing powder was not readily available in the local area to replenish the existing stocks that had deteriorated during the long transit period from the troop contributing country. The water pipelines that had been laid along the ground, under water-logged conditions, were prone to microbial recontamination due to leakages in the network.

Relevant changes

The critical evaluation of the water supply system and necessary modifications in the purification process, based upon locally available options, yielded safe drinking water.

Lessons learnt

. Provision of safe drinking water in the mission area requires an in-depth analysis of prevailing conditions and appropriate planning in the pre-deployment phase. The chemicals for water purification should be procured through UN sources via a ‘letter of assist’ request from the troop contributor.     

某军事活动区域蚊虫危害预警模式的建立及分析

目的探讨某军事活动区域蚊虫危害预警建立模式,并分析蚊虫危害预警等级。方法根据驻地蚊虫密度、蚊虫叮咬症状程度及当地蚊媒传染病的发病情况3项指标,建立无威胁、威胁较小、威胁较大、威胁严重四级危害程度预警等级。结果该军事活动区域蚊媒传染病散在发生,蚊虫密度超标3倍多,蚊虫对人的主要危害是吸血刺叮骚扰,根据设计的蚊虫危害程度预警等级判断,该区域蚊虫危害预警程度为威胁较大等级。结论部队进驻该区域军事演习或训练,必须要根据蚊虫危害预警等级采取行之有效的综合防治措施。     

Government Policay and the Living Arrangements of the Elderly

Although the courts and lawmakers have been reluctant to intervene in relationships between adult children and their aging parents, many examples of such intrusions can be found. Changes in the country's demographics, women's work roles, and the nature of the family have increased the importance of identifying the effects of government policy on family cohesion and living arrangement decisions. This paper represents one component of a larger empirical study on the contemporary extended family in America. The paper reviews the perliminary results of legislative history of the effects on living arrangement decisions of the elderly by Medicare, Medicaid, and filial support legislation.     

The experience of disease and treatments among teenagers and young adults with hematological malignancies

We conducted an exploratory study of young patients (< 25 years) in remission from hematologic malignancies to better understand their experiences of care, the impact of disease and therapeutics on their quality of life (assessed by the FACT-BMT) and on their mental state (assessed by the HADS). On the plan of research, the findings of this study confirm the relevance of the qualitative approach; on the plan of care, the need of interdisciplinary support for these patients in remission.

Comment se libérer des souffrances mentales. Qu’est-ce que la résilience ?

Why and how do minds suffer? The prior and existing clinical classification and psychopathology cannot treat the suffering mind in an integrated way. In this article, resilience will be discussed at both invisible (mind) and visible (brain) level in relation to healing of the suffering mind. Our theory of neo organodynamism allows us to recognize the mental state as a spectrum ranging from a healthy to a pathological mental state. This theory seeks to eradicate prejudice against mental illness by highlighting the fact that anyone can become psychotic if they placed at the same environment and/or stress. How does the mind as a metaphysical entity can have an effect on the brain as a material entity? To answer this question, we have proposed the theory of psychiatric monistic parallelism. We wondered about the consciousness in its intrinsic definition through approach to life as a fundamental particle. The use of the weak measurement in quantum mechanics that can obtain the information of a mental state without disturbing its state allows us to reach their individual virtuality. The resilience is considered as the power of restoration of the mind-body complex and the spontaneous power of remission. In other words, considering the resilience as the visible level (the brain) and the invisible level (mind) makes possible to gain the key for cure from a pathological mental state. For this, we must understand first what the mental disorder is. The psychosis is the synaptic disorder as the visible result, but its true origin is in the mind. The mind cannot get sick. We do not know all the elements that constitute the mind as itself. The environment influences the neural network of the brain by sensory perceptions (quantum potential), then the psychotic symptoms are observed. The environment determines the dynamism of the neural network. Although the mind seems to be dominated by uncertainty, the influence of the environment can act and change the mental state. Thus, the mental state is constantly changing depending on the surrounding environment. Therefore, we can see that all mental disorders are spectrum of the mental state. According to our theory of psychiatric monistic parallelism, the event changes the magnetic field strength and makes appear an individual virtuality. The mind is thus transformed into a function of the modified strength in the magnetic field, it is called “Intensité”. The “Intensité” can act directly on brain cells by changing the potential of the neuronal cell membrane. Thereby, the “Intensité” influences the metabolism of brain cells. The mental transformation that is caused by the change in the environment may be occurred as a result of a changed state of the potential of the network of neural circuit and of a modification of the strength of an individual magnetic field (the “Intensité”). The mind (the invisible entity) and brain (the visible entity) can be considered as a magnetic material, and mutually interact each other through this magnetic effect. The “Intensité” moves on the spectrum of psychic state. Therefore, the change of the mental state is the change of the “Intensité”. The “Intensité” that undergoes the influence of the mental state varies depending on the degree of disorder of the meta-noesis. The mental state varies between a healthy state and a psychopathological state, following the organic degeneration caused by various influences such as stress. The displacement of the “Intensité” to the upstream in the spectrum of mental state is called resilience, or spontaneous remission. And its downstream displacement is considered the worsening of the mental state. The “Intensité” itself can become either the aggravating factor of the mental state or the engine of the resilience. At the visible level of the resilience, the basis of mental transformation is mainly the remodeling of the GABAergic neural network. In other words, before the reorganization of the pathogen synapse fixed by neuronal accessory pathways formed by stress stimuli, it is needed for the resilience that restoring original neuronal conduction of the main neural network must be primarily carried out. In this meaning, we must focus on the rehabilitation and the repetition of learning and activities for the visible level of resilience. This is the mechanism of resilience or spontaneous remission in the visible and invisible level.
