Whereas water loss in land living animals occurs continuously, water intake takes place discontinuously. At the normal operating set point of plasma osmolality, urine is more concentrated than plasma due to secretion of vasopressin. Thus animals operate around a state of mild dehydration. As water loss occurs, the severity of dehydration and thirst increase in intensity and at some point water intake occurs. Sufficient water is consumed to return plasma osmolality to the normal operating set point. Food intake and water balance are interdependent as food provides the osmoles which determine obligatory renal solute excretion. When dry food with the same osmotic content was substituted for canned food (water content 74%), dogs increased water intake from 24.2 +/- 4.3 to 62.2 +/- 8.8 ml/kg. Urine output and urine osmolality were unchanged, as under conditions of normal hydration, near maximal urine concentration is achieved. Changing water intake is the only available variable to maintain water balance. During water deprivation, the major renal mechanism appears to be natriuresis. In rehydration, satiety mechanisms ensure appropriate water intake and renal sodium conservation restores sodium balance. 相似文献

Summary: We have been involved in developing a health-related quality-of-life model for use as an outcome measure in epilepsy. As part of the further development of this model, we have developed a measure of life fulfilment. This scale is based on methods previously described by Krupinski in 1980. The value of Krupinski's approach is the opportunity for patients to weight the numerous aspects of their quality of life and assess the discrepancy between their actual and desired circumstances. The life fulfilment scale has been shown to be reliable (α= 0.7) and valid. The scale is currently being applied to several clinical studies in epilepsy. We believe that the scale provides a valuable contribution to our health-related quality-of-life model. 相似文献

The morphologic effects of androgen deprivation in the different lobes of the rat prostate were examined by light microscopic morphometry. The prostates of Wistar male rats (260-340 g) were fixed in situ by glutaraldehyde perfusion in castrated animals 1 week after gonadectomy and in intact animals. The ventral (VP), dorsal (DP), and lateral (LP) lobes as well as the coagulating gland (CG) were dissected out, weighed, and processed for light microscopy. Using stereologic methods the following parameters were estimated for each lobe: volume fraction of connective tissue, epithelium and glandular lumina, average epithelial height, average epithelial cell volume, and total number of epithelial cells. Castration leads to a 58-76% reduction of the wet weight of all prostatic lobes. The decrease of glandular tissue is greater in VP than in LP, DP, and CG. In VP and LP, there is a 39-45% reduction of the epithelial height, and this effect is less pronounced in DP and CG. For all lobes, the shrinkage of average epithelial cell volume is in the same range (25-30%). Moreover, in VP and LP, there is a 70% reduction of the total number of cells, whereas the reduction is less in DP and CG. It thus seems that the reduction of prostatic epithelial tissue mass upon castration is due to a reduction of the number of cells as well as a reduction of the volume of individual cells. Due to its fundamental importance, the movement of water across cell membranes has been an active area of research for more than 100 years. This subject is central to consideration of normal water metabolism by terrestrial animals, as well as derangements in overall water balance that are frequently encountered by nephrologists in the care of their patients. The objective of this review is to discuss the most basic aspects of cell membrane water permeability and provide a framework for these data in the context of the care of pediatric patients with renal disease. While the water permeability of most cell membranes can be accounted for by the diffusion of water across the lipid bilayer, other cells, including the red blood cell and certain epithelial cells that line the proximal and collecting tubules of the kidney and the urinary bladder of amphibians, possess specialized water channels. Water channels are composed of specialized proteins that create aqueous pores across cell membrane. Currently, there are active research efforts to isolate and characterize water channel proteins from these cell types. Data concerning the distribution, permeability and function of these various water channels will greatly enhance our knowledge of how water is transported across cell membranes. 相似文献

目的 评价间歇性雄激素阻断治疗晚期前列腺癌的可行性及优点.方法 选取晚期前列腺癌患者59例,随机分为2组.给予间歇性雄激素阻断治疗30例(A组),给予持续雄激素阻断治疗29例(B组),观察两组患者的疾病进展及治疗期间副反应的发生情况,比较两种方法的治疗效果.结果 A组患者平均随访26个月,B组患者平均随访27个月,两组患者疾病进展情况未见明显差异.A组患者副反应低于B组患者且能在治疗间歇期得到缓解.结论 间歇性雄激素阻断治疗方法可行,能够减少患者治疗的副反应,提高患者生活质量. 相似文献

The apparent connection between sleep debt, performance decrements and workplace accidents has generated a need for feasible vigilance tests that focus on the quantification of daytime sleepiness in occupational settings. The objective of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity of the Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) to acute sleep deprivation of various doses. Eight healthy female volunteers, mean age 28.9 years (range 23–36), participated in this laboratory study. After an adaptation night, the subjects were assigned to four counterbalanced, randomly ordered night sleep conditions. These four conditions allowed for a time in bed (TIB) of 0, 2, 4 or 8 h, producing a total sleep time of 0, 113, 218 and 427 min, respectively. The ability to sustain wakefulness was measured after the TIB period at 11.00 and 17.00 hours by the MWT. Analysis of variance with repeated measures was used to study the dependence of MWT sleep latencies on the immediately prior TIB period. Both the latency of stage 1 sleep onset and the appearance of slow eye movements reduced significantly with increased sleep loss. The quantitative relationship between the previous total sleep time and the subsequent MWT sleep latencies followed an exponentially decaying function showing a high sensitivity to acute, severe night sleep loss but low sensitivity to less severe sleep restrictions. It is concluded that the MWT seems to be a sensitive method for the estimation of acute sleep deprivation. The test results appear, however, non-linearly related to the earlier sleep debt. 相似文献

目的:了解医院、宾馆空调冷却塔水中军团菌污染情况。方法:于2001年8月采集W市2家宾馆和4家医院的中央空调冷却塔水样,过滤空调冷却水的滤膜经盐酸处理后其处理液接种于GVPC平板,烛缸培养后选取可疑菌落进行生化试验、血清学试验并以PCR方法鉴定。结果:W市2家医院及1家星级宾馆的中央空调冷却塔水中分离到5株军团菌,2株为嗜肺军团菌血清1型(Lp1),2株为嗜肺军团菌血清5型(Lp5)。结论:应加强对医院、宾馆空调冷却塔水中军团菌的监测。 相似文献
