In an effort to determine whether or not conditioning is possible when CS intensity is at least as high as US intensity, nine groups of human subjects were employed in a skin conductance conditioning study. White noise CS and US intensities of 95- and 115-dB were varied orthogonally in the experimental groups, while control groups were incorporated to control for overall signal frequency and differences in habituation rates attributable to differences in intertrial interval. By conventional contrasts first interval response (FIR) conditioning was observed, but when controls for differential habituation rates were incorporated in the contrasts there was no evidence of FIR conditioning. Second interval response (SIR) conditioning was obtained, but it was manifest as an anticipatory response to the higher of two US intensities rather than in conventional conditioning vs control group comparisons. It was also shown that high CS intensities induce suppression of SIR levels, with greater suppression associated with the higher intensity. Several conclusions were made: 1) in a simple trace conditioning paradigm with skin conductance responding as the measure, it is not clear that what we have typically called a conditioning effect is separable from an habituation effect; 2) conditioning is possible even when CS intensity is as high as or higher than US intensity; and 3) the use of time sample measurement in the absence of signals provides a useful baseline for determining overall increases and decreases in SIR level.  相似文献

 The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of maximal arm exercise on the skin blood circulation of the paralyzed lower limbs in persons with spinal cord injury (PSCI). Eight male PSCI with complete lesions located between T3 and L1 performed graded maximal arm-cranking exercise (MACE) to exhaustion. The skin blood flux at the thigh (SBFT) and that at the calf (SBFC) were monitored using laser-Doppler flowmeter at rest and for 15 s immediately after the MACE. The subject's mean peak oxygen uptake and peak heart rate was 1.41 ± 0.22 l · min–1 and 171.6 ± 19.2 beats · min–1, respectively. No PSCI showed any increase in either SBFT or SBFC after the MACE, when compared with the values at rest. These results suggest that the blood circulation of the skin in the paralyzed lower limbs in PSCI is unaffected by the MACE. Accepted: 12 September 1996  相似文献

We investigated the oxygen uptake (O2) response to exhaustive square wave exercise of approximately 2, 5 and 8 min duration in cycling and running. Nine males completed a ramp test and three square wave tests on a motorised treadmill and the same four tests on a cycle ergometer, throughout which gas exchange was assessed (Douglas bag method). The peak O2 from the ramp test was higher for running than for cycling [mean (SD): 58.4 (2.8) vs. 55.9 (3.7) ml.kg–1.min–1; P=0.04]. However O2max (defined as the highest O2 achieved in any of the four tests) did not differ between running and cycling [60.0 (2.9) vs. 58.5 (3.3) ml.kg–1.min–1; P=0.15]. The peak O2 was similar (P>0.1) for the 5 and 8 min square wave tests [98.5 (1.8) and 99.2 (2.3) %O2max for running; 97.0 (4.2) and 97.5 (2.0) %O2max for cycling] but lower (P<0.001) for the 2-min test [91.8 (2.5) and 89.9 (5.5) %O2max for running and cycling respectively]. O2 increased over the final two 30-s collection periods of the 2-min test for cycling [O2=0.18 (0.15) l.min–1; P<0.01] but not running [O2=0.00 (0.09) l.min–1; P=0.98]. We conclude that in the aerobically fit the peak O2 for square wave running or cycling at an intensity severe enough to result in exhaustion in approximately 2 min is below O2max. In addition to entraining circadian rhythms, light has acute effects on sleep and wakefulness in mammals. To determine whether light and darkness have similar effects in birds, the only non-mammalian group that displays sleep patterns comparable to mammals, we examined the effects of lighting changes on sleep and wakefulness in the pigeon. We quantified sleep behavior (i.e., bilateral or unilateral eye closure) in pigeons maintained under a 12:12 LD cycle, and immediately following a change from a 12:12 to a 3:3 LD cycle. During both LD cycles, sleep was most prevalent during dark periods. During the 3:3 LD cycle, darkness had the greatest sleep promoting effect during the hours corresponding to the subjective night of the preceding 12:12 LD cycle, whereas light suppressed sleep across circadian phases. As previously suggested, the light-induced decrease in sleep in the subjective night might be partly mediated by the suppression of melatonin by light. Although the sleep promoting effect of darkness was modulated by the circadian rhythm, sleep in darkness occurred during all circadian phases, suggesting that darkness per se may play a direct role in inducing sleep. In addition to the effects of lighting on behavioral state, we observed an overall bias toward more right eye closure under all lighting conditions, possibly reflecting a response to the novel testing environment.  相似文献

The effects of variations in stroke volume on the intensity of cardiac stimuli was examined in a series of three experiments that empolyed classical psychophsical methods to assess heartbeat detection. Stroke volume was manipulated by passive body tilt and recorded using impedance cardiography while subjects performed heartbeat detection tasks. The postural manipulation generated little or no change in contractility or momentum but did produce substantial changes in stroke volume. However, this potential source of variation in cardiac stimulus magnitude did not influence either the precision of heartbeat detection or the temporal location of heartbeat sensations. It is concluded that the intensity dimension of the heartbeat stimulus is not determined by stroke volume.  相似文献

Sensitivity to heartbeat sensations is commonly assessed using tasks that require individuals to judge the simultaneity of heartbeats and tones. In two experiments, we investigated the suitability of this paradigm for examining cardioception. In the first experiment, participants judged the simultaneity of near–threshold vibrations and suprathreshold tones. Precision in judging vibration–tone simultaneity was directly related to the detectability of the mechanical stimuli, thereby supporting use of the simultaneity paradigm to assess heartbeat detection. In the second experiment, we examined the influences of sensitivity to mechanical stimuli and the ability to make intermodality simultaneity judgments on the precision of heartbeat detection. We measured participants' vibrotactile thresholds, precision in judging light–tone simultaneity, and precision in judging heartbeat–tone simultaneity. The ability to judge the simultaneity of lights and tones accounted for 24.3% of the variance in precision of heartbeat detection, and mechanical sensitivity accounted for a further 8.5%.  相似文献

Summary The b-wave in the ERG of guinea pigs born and reared in darkness for three months is considerably smaller than that in animals of the same age reared under normal circumstances.Exposure to room illumination for ten days greatly restores the ERG. The ERG in four days old light deprived animals is normally developed. A three months light deprivation period causes a relatively small effect in normally raised adult animals.From these experiments it is concluded that the initial ERG development in the guinea pig is not affected by light deprivation. However, once developed the ERG in new born animals is more vulnerable to prolonged light deprivation than that in adult ones.  相似文献

Processing of binaural stimuli by cat superior olivary complex neurons   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
Summary A method was developed to record stereotactically from the cat Superior Olivary Complex (SOC) using glass micropipettes. Sound stimulation was given through a closed system that permitted independent variation of interaural time (time) and intensity (int) differences. The most common binaural units found (n = 34) were ipsilateral excitatory, contralateral inhibitory (EI1), cells of the Lateral Superior Olive (LSO). Some Medial Superior Olive (MSO) cells and presumed MSO ascending afferents were found but, as noted by other authors, we found it difficult to obtain single unit recordings from this nucleus. The LSO EI cells were mostly sensitive to higher frequencies and showed Peristimulus Time Histograms (PSTHs) consisting of a sharp On response followed by a plateau when stimulated with Best Frequency (BF) tone bursts or noise bursts. This On response was sensitive to time and int such that ipsilateral time lead or intensity increase resulted in a stronger response. The response reached a minimum around zero time or int. No sharp peaks or dips were seen in the physiological range needed for localization, instead the response increased with increasing ipsilateral lead or intensity to the maximum values tested (2048 s time, 30 dB int). In the physiological range the time and int response were complementary (both increasing response as ipsilaterality was increased). Provided enough sound energy in the unit's sensitive region was present, the same time curves were produced when BF tone bursts, masked tone bursts, sharp onset tone bursts or noise bursts were used. Changing the time of the carrier of the tone burst alone had no effect (except for one cell with a BF of 560 Hz), only the relative time of arrival of the stimulus envelope seemed to be important. In contrast to these LSO EI cells MSO-type units showed EI or EE predominantly low frequency phase-locked responses. When stimulated with interaurally phase shifted (pha) BF tones the unit response was a cyclic function of pha. Some cells (all that were tested, n = 6 including the 560 Hz LSO EI cell) showed these cyclic responses when stimulated with noise bursts or non-BF tones. However, these characteristic delays were not necessarily in the physiological range, i.e. we could find no evidence that these units were responding to time/pha values corresponding to a particular sound source direction. In both LSO and MSO it seems that integration of information higher in the CNS from a population of these cells is necessary for unambiguous coding of sound source direction. The time intensity trading ratios measured in two MSO type cells (11 and 26 /dB) were clearly different to those measured in LSO EI cells (n = 6, 99–550 s/dB).
