CHARACTERISTICS OF MUCINS AND CEA IN GLOBOID DYSPLASTIC CELLS OF HUMAN STOMACH AND ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH SIGNET RING CELL CARCINOMA

Fourty-three cases of globoid dysplasia and signet ring cell carcinoma were stained by mucin and CEA (ABC method). It was found that there were three kinds of mucins (neutral, sialo and sulphomucin in both globoid dysplastic cells and signet ring cells. The percentages of the three kinds of mucins seen in the two kinds of cells were not much different. It was indicated that the altered mucins in the gastric epithelial cells must be a sign of dedifferentiation of the cells and the results of malfunction. The globoid dysplasia type I mainly contained neutral mucin, whereas type II, the acid mucin was predominant, especially the sulphomucin. The CEA positive reaction became stronger as the atypia being remarkable, and the characteristics of distribution of CEA positive particles were similar in the two kinds of cells namely, randomly or disorderly in the cells. CHANGES IN ACTIVITY OF INSULIN RECEPTOR TYROSINE KINASE AND CHARACTERISTICS OF ITS ENDOGENOUS SUBSTRATE IN TRANSFORMED HUMAN LYMPHOCYTES

The cascade reaction of tyrosine phosphorylation provides an attractive mechanism to regulate the metabolism and growth of normal and transformed cells. Thus, considerable effort has been made to identify the cellular substrates of the tyrosine kinases. In this work, the activity of the Insulin receptor tyrosine kinase and endogenous substrate in transformed lymphocytes were studied. Purified human T lymphocytes incubated with phytohemagglutinin (PHA) for 72 hours served as transformed cells, when labeled with [32P] - orthophosphate it appeared that the insulin-dependent protein kinase activity in the transformed cells increased 9- fold. In search for the physiologically significant substrates by using polyclonal antiphosphotyrosine antibody to immunoprecipitate phosphotyrosine-containing proteins that produced in the intact cell during insulin stimulation, a protein with molecular weight of 45kDa as identified and designated as PP45, which occurred during the 5 minutes response of lymphocytes to insuli

SPECIAL TYPES OF EARLY GASTRIC CANCER

Sixty seven cases with special types of early gastric cancer collected from 119 early gastric cancer specimens surgically resected in the Cancer Institute of CMU from 1964 to 1987 are reported. The pathological and biological characteristics of superficial spreading focal penetrating types, microcarcinoma and small carcinoma, "Pin-point cancer", multiple early cancer and gastric stump cancer were analysed. The authors believe that understanding these special types of early gastric cancer is of great importance not only in the study of histogenesis but also in clinical treatment and prevention of gastric cancer.

Observation on Efficacy of Puerarin in Treating Diabetic Retinopathy

Objective: Using the principle of promoting blood circulation to remove s tasis to observe central retinal arterial and venous blood flow indexes, and hemorrheology of diabetic retinopathy patients with puerarin. Methods: Thirty patients with diabetic retinopathy were randomly divided into the treated group (n=15) and the control group (n=15). The treated group was given puerarin 400 mg per day intravenously dripping. The control group was given Mikebao 500 μg intramuscularly, once per day. Both groups were treated for 3 co nsecutive weeks as one treatment course. Two courses later, hemorrheologic parameters, central retinal arterial and venous blood flow indexes were observed . Results: Comparison before and after treatment showed red blood cell aggregation index, the whole bloo d viscosity rate, plasma viscosity rate, fibrinogen and erythrocyte sedimentatio n rate, have all improved obviously (P<0.05, P<0.01). Compared wi th the control gro up, there was significant difference (P<0.05, P<0.01). With the treated group before and after treatment, the peak systolic velocity (P SV) of c entral retinal artery, their end diastolic volume, the acceleration, the central retinal venous reflux velocity have improved respectively. Nak ed eye visions were also improved, compared with the control group, the differe nce was significant (P<0.01). Conclusion: Puerarin could reduc e bl ood viscosity, improve microcirculation, and play a positive therapeutic role i n diabetic retinopathy.     

SOME PROBLEMS IN THE SURGICAL TREATMENT OF GASTRIC CANCER

Radical resections were performed in 177 cases of gastric cancer ( early cancer 31 cases and advanced cancer 146 cases). R1 operation was performed in 10 cases and R2 or R3 was in 167. All patients were followed up to the end of the study with the 5-year survival rate of 57. 6%. In the patients with normal serosa, cancer was often located in the mucosa. In such situation, R1 or R1 operation was advisiable. In the patients of reactive serosal types, the extent of operation should not be reduced. The serosa were often penetrated by cancer cells in diffusely infiltrated cancer, with a poor prognosis. If measures were not taken to destroy free cancer cells, the 5-year survival rate was very low inspite of radical operations. The number of lymph nodes metastasis was closely related to the biological behavior of primary cancer. Prognosis was good after R2 or R3 operation when the cancer was still within the gastric wall, Borrmann type 1,2,3 massive or nest growth patterns, and the number of lymph node metas
