Treatment of recurrent attacks of supraventricular tachycardia during pregnancy causing complications in both mother and fetus

Cardiac arrhythmias including supraventricular tachycardia are commonly encountered during pregnancy. The case of a young Indian woman with recurrent attacks of supraventricular tachycardia during pregnancy which was managed with adenosine and verapamil is reported. The possible mechanisms of maternal and fetal complications are discussed.     

Trigeminal Neuralgia in Pregnancy: A Management Challenge

Pregnancy is known to aggravate pre‐existing chronic painful conditions. Trigeminal neuralgia (TN), albeit a disease of the elderly, may afflict pregnant females, which can further complicate its management. Teratogenic effects of the commonly used drugs on the developing fetus limit pharmacological treatment. Moreover, safety of commonly performed interventional therapies is marred by their inherent fetomaternal effects and more importantly the risk for radiation effects on the fetus due to the use of fluoroscopy. This rare coexistence of TN in pregnancy has not been reported before. Here we present a case of TN in a young woman, whose pain was aggravated when she became pregnant, and she was treated successfully by conventional radiofrequency ablation of the Gasserian ganglion.     

Interactions between marmatite and bornite during the oxidative dissolution process in abiotic and biotic systems

Marmatite and bornite are commonly associated together in nature, and their interactions in an acidic environment are vital for both (bio)hydrometallurgy and acid mine drainage (AMD) production. In this work, dissolution experiments (marmatite : bornite = 2 : 0, 3 : 1, 1 : 1, 1 : 3 and 0 : 2) accompanied by analytic techniques such as electrochemical methods, Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron radiation-XRD (SR-XRD) were utilized to interpret the interactions between marmatite and bornite in acidic abiotic and biotic systems. The dissolution experiments showed that marmatite can significantly accelerate the oxidative dissolution of bornite, especially in the abiotic system. On the contrary, bornite inhibited the oxidative dissolution of marmatite when the percentage of bornite was high. Electrochemical measurements proved that the galvanic interactions between marmatite and bornite were slight and should not be the main cause for the interactions. Combined with the dissolution experiments, analytic techniques and previous references, it could be speculated that marmatite accelerated bornite dissolution mainly by providing an iron source, which acted as the energy source for microorganisms and oxidants. Bornite affected the dissolution of marmatite mainly by Cu²⁺ ions dissolving from bornite. Bornite inhibited the oxidative dissolution of marmatite mainly because a high Cu²⁺ concentration could significantly hinder marmatite dissolution. In addition, the formation of elemental sulfur or jarosite was also one important cause. Bornite intensified marmatite dissolution when the percentage of bornite or the Cu²⁺ concentration was extremely low and then, a synergic dissolution process occurred.

Bleeding complication during coumarin therapy due to amiodarone and azithromycin

A patient with mechanical heart valves developed bleeding, after the introduction of amiodarone and azithromycin. Though the anticoagulant effect could be neutralized, the patient succumbed to heart failure. Any new drug prescribed to patients on anticoagulant must be assessed for its potential for interaction and warrants frequent prothrombin time testing.     

Malignant melanoma of the vagina: report of two cases

Two rare cases of malignant melanoma, (one amelanotic) arising in the vagina in middle-aged group are being reported. Clinical, histopathological and immunohistochemical studies supported the diagnosis. The neoplasm is highly malignant & carries a poor prognosis.     

Retroperitonial atypical lipomatous tumour--a case report

We report a case of atypical lipomatous tumor-sclerosing type, a rare retroperitoneal soft tissue liposarcoma, presented with vague musculoskeletal symptoms. Patient was managed with complete resection of the tumor mass with adjuvant chemotherapy. The patient is doing well, with no evidence of recurrence 22 months after the treatment.     

An encephalocele replacing nose completely

Congenital encephalocele presenting in the nasal region is extremely rare. We present here a case ot tncephaloce lecompletely replacing the nose of a five year old boy and duscuss about similar swellings in this region.
