A case of sudden cardiac death due to mitochondrial disease

A 25-year-old, emaciated man without medical treatment was found to have died suddenly at home by his mother. At autopsy, there were no injuries to his body, but significant circulatory insufficiency was observed. Electron microscopy revealed abnormal mitochondria in cells of the cardiac conduction system. The conduction system was filled with mitochondrial size abnormalities and mitochondrial cristae abnormalities. No notable abnormal findings were observed in other organs. Genetic examination of the blood revealed the mitochondrial pathogenetic variant m.3243A>G. Epileptic seizures, diabetic ketoacidosis, and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state were unlikely to be the cause of sudden death. The cause of death was diagnosed as arrhythmia possibly induced by the failure of the cardiac conduction system due to mitochondrial disease. This is a rare case of sudden death caused by an accumulation of abnormal mitochondria in the cardiac conduction system.     

Analytical studies on illicit heroin

The recovery of heroin in fumes was investigated. In the Netherlands the common mode of heroin smoking is the chasing the dragon procedure: heroin is heated on an aluminium foil by a lighter and the fumes are inhaled. The efficiency of the volatilization of heroin using this procedure was studied under laboratory conditions using thin layer chromatography, gas chromatography and high pressure liquid chromatography. A considerable influence of the form (salt or base) of the heroin was found as well as strong influences of other substances that may be present in illicit heroin samples as diluents. The danger of the inhalation of fumes containing unknown pyrolysis products is mentioned and a hypothesis is given for the phenomenon of heroin-leucoencephalopathy that was observed in heroin smokers in Amsterdam in 1981. The types of heroin encountered in the Netherlands are discussed with regard to their suitability for smoking.     

Thirty autosomal insertion-deletion polymorphisms analyzed using the Investigator® DIPplex Kit in populations from Iraq,Lithuania, Slovenia,and Turkey

Thirty autosomal insertion-deletion (InDel) polymorphisms were analyzed in four populations from Iraq, Lithuania, Slovenia, and Turkey using the commercial kit Investigator® DIPplex. Genotyping issues were encountered for five of the 30 InDels. They were most probably caused by polymorphisms located in the primer binding sites. Population and forensic parameters were calculated. No significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium or significant linkage disequilibrium were detected. The observed heterozygosities ranged from 33% to 61% depending on the marker and the population. The combined probability of exclusion for the 30 markers was 99.7% in all four populations and the matching probabilities were 1 in 3–4 × 10¹² individuals. The multidimensional scaling plot drawn from F_ST distances showed a good concordance between the relative position of the 15 populations included in the plot and their geographic locations.     

A place for the heart: A journey in the post-asylum landscape. Metaphors and materiality

The downsizing of psychiatric hospitals has created a new institutional landscape in the local community to support people with severe mental problems in their daily living. This study explores meeting places in Norway from the users’ perspectives. The users used four metaphors to describe these meeting places: “like a home”, “like a family”, “like a landing ground” and “like a trampoline”. The users have decorated the interiors of the meeting places with hearts made from various materials, and these could be considered as symbols of the places. The metaphors used: the hearts and the rooms and interiors, reflect old ideas about calmness and dignity rather than new ideas based on New Public Management.     

Radiometry versus osteometry in sex assessment: a study of the Cretan radius

Sex estimation is vital for biological profiling, thus qualitative and quantitative methods have been developed for every skeletal part in humans. However, somehow the radius has been neglected. This study aims to develop a sex estimation method on radiographs of the radius applicable in situations when classical osteometry cannot be applied. A total of 103 left radii were used in this study. Three classical measurements (maximum length, head diameter and distal breadth) were taken on the dry bones. Digital radiographs of the same radii were taken using a portable X-ray machine (Technix TCA 4R PLUS). Eight landmarks are selected on the radiograph of the proximal and six on the radiograph of the distal radius, generating in total 43 linear distances. ANOVA detected three osteometric and 24 radiometric variables that differed significantly between males and females (p<0.05). Classical osteometry resulted in up to 91% classification accuracy while the best multivariate formula of the radiometric method gave 88% correct classification. The study proposes a rapid and inexpensive alternative method for sex screening based on digital radiographs of the radius, a method that could be particularly advantageous in cases of mass disasters with numerous mutilated and/or burnt bodies where maceration is not an option.
