Measurements of the volume magnetic susceptibility of solids using the classical Gouy balance approach are hampered by variations in apparent density of the packed powder. In this paper a quantitative NMR measurement of the volume magnetic susceptibility of powdered solids is described and the volume susceptibility of bone is reported. The technique is based on the measurement of changes in incremental linewidth (1/πT2′) induced in a marker fluid whose susceptibility can be predictably modified by changing the composition, such as by addition of a soluble diamagnetic compound. The spectroscopic linewidth of the marker fluid is determined by the susceptibility difference between the fluid and the suspended solid. Changes in the linewidth are accompanied by bulk magnetic susceptibility induced frequency shifts in the fluid resonance. Correlating the two dependencies allows measurement of the absolute volume susceptibility of the solid. The susceptibility of bovine rib bone was found to be ?0.90 ± 0.02 × ? 10?6 (CGS) confirming previous estimates which suggested bone to be more diamagnetic than the marrow constituents. Knowledge of the susceptibility of bone is relevant in view of the growing interest in MRI osteodensitometric techniques.  相似文献

Paraffin tissue microarrays (PTMAs) are blocks of paraffin holding up to 1000 paraffin tissue core biopsies (PTCBs) for high throughput molecular analysis. The number of PTCBs in a PTMA depends on the surface area of the PTMA, the diameter of and the distance between the PTCBs and on their arrangement inside the assembled PTMA. The PTCBs are usually arranged in a rectangular x-y pattern of rows and columns. This design facilitates the construction of a PTMA because the operator simply turns the wheels of an x-y-table for a set, unchanging distance. The evaluation of the stained sections is also relatively easy. However, this rectangular arrangement means wasted space in the PTMA. To reclaim this space, the PTCBs could be arranged in a honeycomblike pattern. For every 8 rows in the conventional rectangular arrangement, 1 additional row of PTCBs can be packed. However, the researcher has to become accustomed to this uncommon arrangement when filling and evaluating the PTMA. Automatic slide readers and specially designed computer programs for the digital evaluation of the PTMAs can be helpful. In summary, the arrangement of PTCBs in a honeycomblike pattern increases the density and number of specimens stored in a PTMA, thereby enhancing its efficiency.  相似文献

In this study, we characterize bone microstructure, specifically sex differences, at multiple skeletal sites in 165 subjects >52 yr of age, using microCT technology in vitro. Significant sex differences are observed at the distal radius, femoral neck, and femoral trochanter, but not at the iliac crest, calcaneus, and lumbar vertebral body. Correlations in BV/TV between sites ranged from r = 0.13 to 0.56. INTRODUCTION: The goals of this study were (1) to assess potential sex differences of bone microstructure and their difference between skeletal sites and (2) to explore the relationship of trabecular microstructural properties between relevant skeletal sites. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Trabecular bone microstructural properties were measured in vitro in 165 subjects 52-99 yr of age using microCT. Defined volumes of interest (cylinders with 6 mm diameter and 6 mm length) were scanned at a resolution of 26 microm (isotropic) in six different anatomical sites: distal radius, femoral neck and trochanter, iliac crest, calcaneus, and second lumbar vertebral body. RESULTS: At the radius and femoral neck, trabecular bone displayed a more plate-like structure, thicker trabeculae, smaller separation/higher trabecular number, higher connectivity, and a higher degree of anisotropy in men than in women (p < 0.05). At the trochanter, men displayed more plate-like structure and thicker trabeculae (p < 0.05), but no differences in trabecular separation or other parameters compared with the women. At the calcaneus, iliac crest, and second lumbar vertebra none of the bone parameters displayed significant differences between sexes. The BV/TV at one site explained a range of only 2-32% of the variability at other sites. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that trabecular bone microstructural properties are remarkably heterogeneous throughout the skeleton. Significant differences between men and women are observed at some, but not at all, sites. The magnitude of sex differences in trabecular microstructure coincides with that of fracture incidence observed for some of the sites in epidemiological studies.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of therapy balls as seating on in-seat behavior and legible word productivity of students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Additionally, social validity was assessed to evaluate teacher and student opinions regarding the intervention. METHOD: A single subject, A-B-A-B interrupted time series design was employed across 3 students (2 males, 1 female) with ADHD. The study was conducted in a 4th grade inclusive classroom during daily language arts. During phases 1 and 3, the 3 participants and all other class members sat on chairs (in-seat on chair); during phases 2 and 4, everyone sat on therapy balls (in-seat on ball). Dependent variables were in-seat behavior and legible word productivity. Data were graphed and visually analyzed for differences between phases. RESULTS: Results demonstrated increases in in-seat behavior and legible word productivity for the students with ADHD when seated on therapy balls. Social validity findings indicated that generally the teacher and students preferred therapy balls. CONCLUSION: This study provides evidence that use of therapy balls for students with ADHD may facilitate in-seat behavior and legible word productivity.  相似文献
