Odontoameloblastoma

A case of odontoameloblastoma affecting the left mandible is reported. Initially treated by conservative excision due to its small size, the lesion recurred after 18 months and was treated by radical excision and subsequent reconstruction by a rib graft.     

Return of fertility following discontinuation of an injectable contraceptive — Norethisterone oenanthate (NET EN) 200mg dose

The return of fertility following discontinuation of norethisterone oenanthate (NET EN) 200 mg injectable contraceptive after use for a minimum period of six months or more was studied in 69 women who discontinued the method for planning pregnancy. Former users of copper intra-uterine device (CuT 200) were enrolled as a control group. Another 161 women who had discontinued NET EN due to other reasons (e.g. amenorrhoea, excessive bleeding or personal reasons) were also studied for return of fertility after ensuring that they were not using any other method of contraception and were exposed to the risk of pregnancy. The subjects from both groups were followed for a period of one year. The cumulative conception rates at one year were 72.5 and 83.6 per 100 subjects for ex-NET EN and ex-CuT 200 users who had discontinued the method for planning pregnancy and this difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). The median time for conception for ex-NET EN users was 7.8 months as compared to 3.7 months in ex-CuT 200 users but the cumulative conception rates at the end of one year show that future return of fertility in NET EN users does not appear to be adversely affected.

In 51 subjects who had discontinued NET EN due to amenorrhoea, the return of fertility was predictably slower and less. The return of fertility in subjects who discontinued NET EN for other reasons (e.g. excessive bleeding and other personal reasons) was similar to ex-NET EN and ex-CuT 200 users.     

Abdominal compartment syndrome--an old syndrome, a new perspective.

The abdominal compartment syndrome is a life threatening condition resulting from pathologic elevation of the intraabdominal pressure. Prompt diagnosis is required to avoid significant sequelae. Diagnosis of this syndrome is based on clinical findings and intra abdominal pressure monitoring. Treatment consists of decompressive laparotomy, which corrects the pathology. Various surgical techniques are described to manage the open abdomen. Despite considerable attention accorded to this disorder, it is still associated with high morbidity and mortality. This review article deals with the identification of risk factors, pathophysiology, diagnostic criteria and treatment of critically ill patients with the abdominal compartment syndrome.     

Pharmacological Studies on Leaves of Withania somnifera.

Anti-inflammatory activity and protective effect against CCl (4)-induced hepatotoxicity of alcoholic extract of leaves of WITHANIA SOMNIFERA have been assessed. The leaves were found to possess marked effects in subacute inflammation and hepatotoxicity. A comparison of the anti-inflammatory properties revealed the extract at 1 g/kg dose to be as active as 50 mg/kg of phenylbutazone and 10 mg/kg of hydrocortisone. The protective effect of the extract at 1 g/kg dose against CCl (4)-induced hepatotoxicity was comparable to 10 mg/kg of hydrocortisone.     

Studies on Relative Toxicities of Six Insecticides on Epigeic Earthworm, Perionyx excavatus

The 96 h LC₅₀ values of six insecticides were determined on a non-target epigeic earthworm Perionyx excavatus under laboratory conditions. Cypermethrin was found most toxic to P. excavatus (LC₅₀-0.008 mg/kg), followed by endosulfan (LC₅₀-0.03 mg/kg), carbaryl (LC₅₀-6.07 mg/kg), chlorpyrifos (LC₅₀-7.3 mg/kg), aldicarb (LC₅₀-10.63 mg/kg) and monocrotophos (LC₅₀-13.04 mg/kg). When these LC₅₀ values were compared with their respective recommended agricultural doses, aldicarb and carbaryl appeared more dangerous than other pesticides because of their lower LC₅₀ values than their respective recommended agricultural dose. Mean lethal time to cause 50% mortality at recommended agricultural dose (LT₅₀) also indicated that aldicarb achieved the fastest LT₅₀ (26 h) followed by endosulfan (38 h) and carbaryl (44 h) indicating the danger of these pesticides to P. excavatus.     

Extended spectrum beta lactamase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae infections: a review of the literature.

Infections caused by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing pathogens, particularly Klebsiella pneumoniae, are increasing. The epidemiology of ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae, the mechanisms of resistance, and treatment strategies for infections caused by these organisms are reviewed.
