Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and lymphoma in an Iranian fat-tailed sheep: a case report

A 5-year-old Iranian fat-tailed sheep was referred to the Veterinary Clinic of Shiraz University in September 2003 with a history of emaciation, fever, decreased appetite, lethargy and cough. Small cutaneous and subcutaneous nodules were palpable, especially under the ribs on both sides of the thorax. Discrete cutaneous plaques and large scabby lesions were also observed. Very large mammary gland lymph nodes were noticed on palpation. Haematological and serum biochemical values were estimated through standard haematological and biochemical techniques. In this case a normocytic–normochromic anaemia, leukocytosis and lymphocytosis were found. The concentrations of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, cholesterol and the activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) were higher than the values reported for sheep. Necropsy findings revealed that the lymph nodes were affected in most organs. Malignant lymphoma in the kidney, heart, spleen, mammary glands, liver and bone marrow was observed. The histopathological appearance of the affected tissues varied considerably, depending upon the degree of tumour infiltration. According to the history, clinical signs, laboratory findings, necropsy findings and histopathological examination the case was diagnosed as chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and lymphoma.     

A comparison of placement methods using a two-in-one dentin pin

Experiments were performed to determine the effect of pin channel preparation with standard and reduction speed handpieces, and pin seating by hand and with motor drive. The greatest retention was achieved by preparation with a standard handpiece at 6000 rpm, and manual pin placement with a hand driver. The most consistent retention values were achieved using the reduction handpiece. All preparation and placement combinations examined produced a clinically acceptable result.     

Vitamin B status and response to replacement therapy in patients with burning mouth syndrome.

The aim of the study was to determine, in a group of patients with therapy-resistant burning mouth syndrome (BMS), the possible deficiency of vitamins B1, B2, and B6 and the effect of proper vitamin replacement therapy. Sixteen individuals, aged 47 to 81 years, participated in the study. All underwent a base-line examination comprising anamnestic information, subjective assessment of symptoms, dietary registration, salivary analysis, and serum analysis of thiamine (B1), riboflavine (B2), and pyridoxine (B6). Fifteen individuals had low thiamine and/or riboflavine levels in accordance with suggested levels in the literature and were given replacement therapy. No effect on BMS of vitamin replacement therapy or placebo therapy could be demonstrated.     

Apparent inactivation of alpha 1-antiproteinase by sulphur-containing radicals derived from penicillamine

alpha 1-Antiproteinase is the major inhibitor of proteolytic enzymes, such as elastase, in human plasma. Its elastase-inhibitory capacity can be inactivated by exposure to hydroxyl radicals (.OH) generated either by pulse radiolysis or by an Fe3+-EDTA/H2O2/ascorbic acid system. Inactivation of alpha 1-antiproteinase by radiolytically-generated .OH under anoxic conditions was decreased by adding a range of anti-inflammatory drugs to the reaction mixtures, including the thiol compound penicillamine. However, under conditions favouring formation of oxysulphur radicals, protection by thiols such as penicillamine was much decreased. It is proposed that sulphur-containing radicals resulting from attack of biologically-produced oxidants upon penicillamine in the presence of O2 can themselves inactivate alpha 1-antiproteinase, and that such radicals might contribute to the side-effects produced by penicillamine or gold thiol therapy in rheumatoid arthritis.     

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the mediastinum

A case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the mediastinum presenting with unusual features of fever and leucocytosis is reported. This is the youngest patient reported in the literature who had this tumour in the mediastinum.
