This study investigated the gender differences in association of some behavioural and socioeconomic factors with obesity indices in a population-based sample of 12,514 Iranian adults. The mean body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) were significantly higher in women than in men. Current and passive smoking had an inverse association with BMI among males whereas current smoking, transportation by a private car, and longer duration of watching television (TV) had a positive association with BMI among females. Current and passive smoking, cycling, and Global Dietary Index (GDI) had an inverse association with WC among males. Higher consumption of fruits and vegetables, current and passive smoking, duration of daily sleep, and GDI had an inverse association with WC among females. Using a private car for transportation had a significant positive association with WHR among both males and females. Living in an urban area, being married, and having a higher education level increased the odds ratio of obesity among both the genders. Non-manual work also increased this risk among males whereas watching TV and current smoking increased this risk among females. Such gender differences should be considered for culturally-appropriate interventional strategies to be implemented at the population level for tackling obesity and associated cardiometabolic risk factors. 相似文献

Tumor suppressor genes p53 and p16 INK4a and the proto-oncogene MDM2 are considered to be essential G1 cell cycle regulatory genes whose loss of function is associated with ESCC carcinogenesis. BackgroundThe 5,10‐methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is an important enzyme of folate and methionine metabolism, which is expressed in human oocytes and preimplantation. Due to the involvement of MTHFR in female reproduction, we tend to evaluate the influence of MTHFR A1298C polymorphism on ovarian marker reserves such as serum anti‐Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels in women after in vitro fertilization (IVF)/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).MethodsA total of 100 women, who underwent ART treatment due to male factor infertility, were recruited into this study. MTHFR A1298C polymorphism was detected by polymerase chain reaction‐restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR‐RFLP) technique, and serum AMH concentrations were measured by an ultrasensitive enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).ResultsWomen with the CC genotype had higher AMH levels (4.15 ± 1.67 ng/ml), albeit not significant, than carriers with other genotypes after ovarian stimulation. No significant differences existed in terms of miscarriage and live birth rates among different genotype groups.ConclusionThe presence of the C mutant allele of the 1298 polymorphism in the MTHFR gene led to an increasing trend in serum AMH concentrations; however, the numbers of oocytes retrieved decreased in women with mutated genotypes. This study investigated the effect of orexin-A on the renal dysfunction and histological damage induced by ischaemia/reperfusion at an early stage. Pentobarbital anaesthetised rats were prepared for measuring renal functional variables. Ischaemia was induced by bilateral renal artery clamping for 30 min followed by a 1-h reperfusion period. In orexin-treated rats, it was infused (i.v.) at 500 pmol kg?1 min?1 from starting pre-ischaemic (pretreatment) clearance period. The left kidney was examined using light microscopy. The renal ischaemic challenge resulted in major histological damages, which were associated with decreased creatinine clearance, absolute potassium-excretion and effective free-water reabsorption, but increased fractional sodium-excretion and urine flow during reperfusion period. In orexin-treated rats, the histological damage to the kidneys was improved along with the decrease in creatinine clearance and increase in fractional sodium-excretion being smaller, but the increase in urine flow being larger than those of the non-treated rats, while absolute potassium-excretion and effective free-water reabsorption were equal to those of the sham-operated rats. Orexin-A exhibited a renoprotective effect against ischaemia/reperfusion-induced lesions probably via inhibition of post-ischaemic intrarenal vasoconstriction. 相似文献

Using atomic force microscopy, we imaged the cytosolic surface of the lateral plasma membrane of outer hair cells from guinea pigs’ inner ear. We used a “cell-free” preparation, in which a patch of plasma membrane was firmly attached to a substrate and the cytoplasmic face was exposed. The membrane patches contained densely packed particles whose diameter, after correcting for the geometry of the probing tip, was ~10 nm. The particles were predominantly aligned unidirectionally with spacing of ~36 nm. The density of the particle was ~850 μm?2, which could be an underestimate presumably due to the method of sample preparation. Antibody-labeled specimens showed particles more elevated than unlabeled preparation indicative of primary and secondary antibody complexes. The corrected diameters of these particles labeled with anti-actin were ~12 nm while that with antiprestin were ~8 nm. The alignment pattern in antiprestin-labeled specimens resembled that of the unlabeled preparation. Specimens labeled with actin antibodies did not show such alignment. We interpret that the particles observed in the unlabeled membranes correspond to the 10-nm particles reported by electron microscopy and that these particles contain prestin, a member of the SLC26 family, which is essential for electromotility. 相似文献

Background
Platelet transfusion is required in the acute phase of some thrombocytopenic disorders in order to prevent potentially dangerous hemorrhages.The purpose of this study was to assess the increase in platelet count following a slow platelet transfusion.Methods
Patients suffering from thrombocytopenia due to various underlying diseases were enrolled in the prospective pilot feasibility trial and were randomly divided into two groups. Standard platelet transfusion was administered in one group, while slow transfusion was used in the other. The platelet count was examined at 1 hour, 24 hours, and 1 week following the transfusions.Results
Although the platelet count was higher following 1 hour after transfusion via the standard method, the count tended to be higher 1 week after the transfusion in the slow transfusion group. This difference, however, only turned out to be statistically significant amongst females.Conclusion
A therapy of slow platelet transfusion might be more effective for the prevention of platelet loss. Further studies will be required to strengthen this hypothesis. 相似文献89.

Pancreatic adenocarcinoma is one of the deadliest cancers with poor survival and limited treatment options. Immunotherapy is an attractive option for this cancer that needs to be further developed. Tumours have evolved a variety of mechanisms to suppress host immune responses. Understanding these responses is central in developing immunotherapy protocols. The aim of this study was to investigate potential immune suppressor mechanisms that might occur during development of pancreatic tumours. Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) from mice with spontaneous pancreatic tumours, mice with premalignant lesions as well as wild-type mice were analysed. An increase in the frequency of MDSC early in tumour development was detected in lymph nodes, blood and pancreas of mice with premalignant lesions and increased further upon tumour progression. The MDSC from mice with pancreatic tumours have arginase activity and suppress T-cell responses, which represent the hallmark functions of these cells. Our study suggests that immune suppressor mechanisms generated by tumours exist as early as premalignant lesions and increase with tumour progression. These results highlight the importance of blocking these suppressor mechanisms early in the disease in developing immunotherapy protocols. 相似文献
