Aim

This community-based, cross-sectional survey was conducted to determine the prevalence of anemia and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and their association with nutritional behavior and other determinants.

Subjects and methods

Arabic-speaking women, aged 15–49 years old, residing in Lebanon’s rural areas were included. Demographic and behavioral characteristics, obstetrical and gynecological history, personal and family medical history, and dietary intake data were collected. Predictors of anemia and IDA were determined using logistic regression.

Results

A total of 578 women were included (Lebanese: 55.2%; Syrian: 43.3%) in which 35.5% had anemia and 23.2% had IDA. The mean number of pregnancies was 3.1 ± 3.0 (number of children: 2.5 ± 2.5). In total, 30% had a personal history of anemia or IDA, 29% a family history of anemia, and 20% a family history of IDA. Iron-rich products were consumed by >?90% of the women, whereby >?66.7% mentioned eating liver, tuna, dates and nuts. Syrian nationality (OR = 2.21; CI 95%: 1.38–3.54), age (OR = 1.03, CI 95%: 1.00–1.06), personal history of anemia (OR = 1.97; CI 95%: 1.31–2.95), consumption of dates (OR = 2.07, CI 95%: 1.29–3.31), molasses (OR = 1.61; CI 95%: 1.03–2.51), and soft drinks >?5 times/week (OR = 1.66; CI 95%: 1.09–2.53) were predictors of anemia. Syrian nationality (OR = 1.73, CI 95%: 1.14–2.62), number of pregnancies (OR = 1.08; CI 95%: 1.01–1.15), period >?8 days (OR = 2.01, CI 95%: 1.07–3.80), consumption of eggs (OR = 0.48; CI 95%: 0.25–0.90), dates (OR = 2.58, CI 95%: 1.49–4.46), and coffee or tea (OR = 1.59, CI 95%: 1.03–2.45) were predictors of IDA.

Conclusion

Anemia and IDA are prevalent in women of childbearing age in rural Lebanon. Intervention programs for raising the population’s awareness about IDA’s risk factors and proper nutrition must be implemented.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE

It is expected that dairy products such as cheeses, which are the main source of cholesterol and saturated fat, may lead to the development or increase the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases; however, the results of different studies are inconsistent. This study was conducted to assess the association between cheese consumption and cardiovascular risk factors in an Iranian adult population.

SUBJECTS/METHODS

Information from the Isfahan Healthy Heart Program (IHHP) was used for this cross-sectional study with a total of 1,752 participants (782 men and 970 women). Weight, height, waist and hip circumference measurement, as well as fasting blood samples were gathered and biochemical assessments were done. To evaluate the dietary intakes of participants a validated food frequency questionnaire, consists of 49 items, was completed by expert technicians. Consumption of cheese was classified as less than 7 times per week and 7-14 times per week.

RESULTS

Higher consumption of cheese was associated with higher C-Reactive Protein (CRP), apolipoprotein A and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) level but not with fasting blood sugar (FBS), total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglyceride (TG) and apolipoprotein B. Higher consumption of cheese was positively associated with consumption of liquid and solid oil, grain, pulses, fruit, vegetable, meat and dairy, and negatively associated with Global Dietary Index. After control for other potential confounders the association between cheese intake and metabolic syndrome (OR: 0.81; 96%CI: 0.71-0.94), low HDL-C level (OR: 0.87; 96%CI: 0.79-0.96) and dyslipidemia (OR: 0.88; 96%CI: 0.79-0.98) became negatively significant.

CONCLUSION

This study found an inverse association between the frequency of cheese intake and cardiovascular risk factors; however, further prospective studies are required to confirm the present results and to illustrate its mechanisms.  相似文献

Background

In Angola, COVID-19 cases have been reported in all provinces, resulting in >105,000 cases and >1900 deaths. However, no detailed genomic surveillance into the introduction and spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus has been conducted in Angola. We aimed to investigate the emergence and epidemic progression during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Angola.

Methods

We generated 1210 whole-genome SARS-CoV-2 sequences, contributing West African data to the global context, that were phylogenetically compared against global strains. Virus movement events were inferred using ancestral state reconstruction.

Results

The epidemic in Angola was marked by four distinct waves of infection, dominated by 12 virus lineages, including VOCs, VOIs, and the VUM C.16, which was unique to South-Western Africa and circulated for an extended period within the region. Virus exchanges occurred between Angola and its neighboring countries, and strong links with Brazil and Portugal reflected the historical and cultural ties shared between these countries. The first case likely originated from southern Africa.

Conclusion

A lack of a robust genome surveillance network and strong dependence on out-of-country sequencing limit real-time data generation to achieve timely disease outbreak responses, which remains of the utmost importance to mitigate future disease outbreaks in Angola.  相似文献

The outcome of pediatric renal transplantation was previously reported by a single-center study at the year 2006. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate and report the characteristics and outcome of renal pediatric renal transplantation in a multi-center nationwide study. In this nationwide report, medical records of 907 children (≤18yr) with renal transplantation in eight major pediatric transplant centers of Iran were recorded. These 907 patients received a total of 922 transplants. All children who failed to follow-up were excluded. Rather than baseline characteristics, graft and patient outcomes were considered for survival analysis. For further analysis, they were divided into two groups: patients who had graft survival time more than 10yr (n=91) and the ones with graft survival time of equal or less than 10yr (n=831). Of 922 recipients, 515 (55.8%) were boys and 407 (44.2%) were girls with the mean age of 13.10 (s.d.=3.54) yr. DGF and AR were occurred in 10% and 39.5% of the transplanted children, respectively. Transplantation year, dialyzing status before transplantation, DGF, and AR were significant enough to predict graft survival in cox regression model (overall model: p<0.001). Nowadays, there is a successful live donor pediatric renal transplantation in Iran. Graft survival has improved in our recipients and now the graft survival rates are near to international standards.  相似文献

The N-methyl-d-aspartic acid receptor (NMDAR) is a well-documented key element in the formation of several memories including spatial, olfactory and contextual memory. Although receptor subunits have been linked to memory formation, data on the involvement of the NMDAR complexes is limited.In previous work CD1 mice were trained in the Barnes maze, a low-stress landmaze, and yoked controls were serving as controls. Hippocampal samples from this behavioural study were taken for comparing NMDAR complexes. Hippocampi were taken and stored until analysis at −80 °C.Membrane proteins were extracted from hippocampi using an ultracentrifugation step and applied on Blue Native gels that in turn were used for immunoblotting with antibodies against subunits NR1, NR2A and NR2B. The subunit content of the complexes was determined by denaturing two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and subsequent immunoblotting.An NMDAR complex with an apparent molecular weight between between146 and 242 kDa, probably representing an NR1 dimer was the only complex that was significantly different between trained and yoked animals. A series of NMDAR complexes containing modulatory subunits NR2A or NR2B or both were detected. All complexes contained the NR1subunit.The NR1 dimer complex level, increased in memory formation, may be directly or indirectly involved in the process of spatial memory formation in the CD1 mouse. The results are enabling and challenging further NMDAR studies, both, at the pharmacological and molecular level. Moreover, several NMDAR complexes in the CD1 mouse were shown to be mainly heteropolymers of subunits NR1, NR2A and NR2B, although other recently described subunits were not tested due to unavailability of specific antibodies.Determination of native receptor complexes rather than individual subunits is mandatory and provides the molecular basis for understanding mechanisms of spatial memory.  相似文献

CD4+ T helper cell differentiation is essential for mounting robust immune responses without compromising unresponsiveness toward self-tissue. Here, we show that different subsets of myeloid cells isolated from human peripheral blood modulate TGF-β-dependent CD4+ T-cell developmental programs ex vivo. Human CD14+HLA-DR(-/low) myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) induce Foxp3+ regulatory T cells, whereas CD14+HLA-DR+ monocytes promote generation of IL-17-secreting RORc+ Th17 cells when cocultured with naive CD4+ T cells. More importantly, not only do these 2 subsets modulate the de novo induction of Tregs and Th17 cells from CD4+ T cells, but MDSCs also catalyze the transdifferentiation of Foxp3+ regulatory T cells from monocyte-induced Th17 cells. The mechanism of such Th17 plasticity is dependent on MDSC-derived TGF-β and retinoic acid. Our results identify a previously unknown feature of the different subsets of CD14+ myeloid cells namely their pivotal role in immune response regulation and plasticity of CD4+ T helper cells. We propose that different subsets of myeloid cells in humans can orchestrate the differentiation of naive CD4+ T cells into effector/regulatory T-cell subsets. The balance between these 2 subsets can impact the outcome of immune reaction from inflammation to tolerance.  相似文献

This research evaluated the possible therapeutic potential of Rosa canina as a preventive agent in ischmia/reperfusiom induced acute renal failure in rats. There were three groups (n?=?10), in which rats received orally 7?days before induction of ischemia, hydroalcoholic extract of R. canina (500?mg/kg) in R. canina?+?ischmia/reperfusiom (I/R) group and distilled water in I/R group. In sham group, the renal arteries were not occluded and distilled was administered orally 7?days before surgery. Renal ischemia was induced by both renal arteries occlusion for 45?min followed by 24?h of reperfusion. Blood samples were collected for biochemical analysis, and finally both kidneys were preserved for future histological examination. R. canina treatment reduced total renal histopathological score as well plasma creatinine and blood urea nitrogen levels in R. canina?+?I/R group in comparison to I/R group. According to these results, R. canina can be useful as a preventive agent against renal damages induced by ischemia/reperfusion injury in rat.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to evaluate the concentrations of sialic acids, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and gamma-interferon (INF-γ) and their correlation with acute-phase proteins (haptoglobin, serum amyloid A, ceruloplasmin, and fibrinogen) in cattle infected with foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). Thirty cows were diagnosed and confirmed for FMD. Ten clinically healthy adult cattle were selected as a control group. Serum haptoglobin (Hp), serum amyloid A (SAA), ceruloplasmin, fibrinogen, total sialic acid (TSA), lipid-bound sialic acid (LBSA), protein-bound sialic acid (PBSA), TNF-α, and INF-γ were measured by validated standard methods. All parameters were significantly higher in the diseased animals compared with the healthy group (P < 0.001 in all cases). There were significant associations between Hp and INF-γ, fibrinogen with TSA, fibrinogen with PBSA, TSA with PBSA, and TNF-α with ceruloplasmin in the control group. In the FMD group, significant associations were observed for PBSA with TSA, PBSA with LBSA, and TNF-α with ceruloplasmin. The results of this study revealed that inflammatory mediators (TNF-α, INF-γ, and sialic acids) and acute-phase proteins (SAA, Hp, ceruloplasmin, and fibrinogen) concentrations increased in FMD-infected cattle in response to viral infection. However, more detailed future studies are required to characterize such responses and to improve the development of novel control strategies against FMD.  相似文献

Failure to thrive (FTT) is a perplexing disorder commonly seen by primary care physicians. Identification of FTT and an assessment of severity of the undernutrition are important to identify children at risk, and to provide appropriate intervention for preventing malnutrition and developing sequela. One of different anthropometric methods for categorizing undernutrition in childhood is Waterlow and Gomez classifications. Unfortunately, these classifications are not an easy task for the practitioners due to its difficult calculations. In this paper, Waterlow and Gomez classifications have been shown on the Standard Growth Charts (WHO 2006). Using these curves, the practitioners can determine severity of FTT by plotting weight, height and age of the patients without any calculations.  相似文献
