The purpose of this investigation was to characterize noise levels in spaces designated as “effective quiet” areas on a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier. Noise dosimetry samples were collected in 15 designated spaces, representing 15 noise measurements, while at-sea during airwing carrier qualifications. Equivalent sound level (Leq) measurements were collected during flight operations (Leq (flt ops)), non-flight operations (Leq (non-flt ops)), and over 24-hr periods (Leq (24-hr)). These data were compared to the 70 dBA American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH®) Threshold Limit Value (TLV®) for “effective quiet” areas intended for temporary threshold shift recovery when personnel live and work in a potentially noise hazardous environment for periods greater than 24?hr. The monitored areas were selected based on personnel occupancy/use during off-duty time periods. Areas were classified by either (1) leisure areas that included mess (eating areas), gyms, lounges, an internet cafe, and the fantail social area or (2) berthing (sleeping) areas. The Leq measurements in decibels “A” weighted (dBA) were compared to determine significant differences between Leq (flt ops), Leq (non-flt ops), and Leq (24-hr) and were compared between leisure area and berthing area. Measured noise levels according to time period ranged as follows: (1) Leq (24-hr): 70.8–105.4 dBA; (2) Leq (flt ops): 70–101.2 dBA; and (3) Leq (non-flt ops): 39.4–104.6 dBA. All area measurements over the 24-hr period and during flight operations and 46.7% of the areas during the non-flight operation time period exceeded the “effective quiet” 70 dBA ACGIH TLV. Mean Leqs were 15 dBA higher during flight operations compared to non-flight operations in “effective quiet” areas (p?=?0.001). The Leqs in leisure areas were significantly higher than berthing areas by approximately 21 dBA during non-flight operation periods (p?=?0.001). Results suggest noise levels in “effective quiet” areas frequented by aircraft carrier personnel during off-duty hours when at-sea may inhibit auditory recovery from occupational noise exposures that occur on-duty. 相似文献

AbstractBackground: Auditory steady-state response (ASSR) and click-evoked auditory brain response (c-ABR) have been used for hearing assessment for decades years, the correlation of the two methods and the effects of type and degree of hearing loss (HL) to the correlation in infants younger than 6?months of age are unclear.Objectives: To compare the correlation of ASSR and c-ABR and then to analyse the effects of type and degree of HL on the correlation in infants younger than 6?months of age.Material and methods: Retrospective study comparing ASSR thresholds at various frequencies with c-ABR thresholds. 182 ears from 96 infants were assessed and classified according to types and degrees of HL.Results: The correlation coefficients were: 0.823, 0.864, 0.891, 0.871, 0.908, 0.915 and 0.913 between ASSR thresholds at 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 2–4, 1–2–4, 0.5–1–2–4?kHz and c-ABR thresholds respectively. The correlation coefficients in the group of sensorineural HL (SHL) (r?=?0.763–0.900) were higher than conductive HL (r?=?0.309–0.619) across all frequencies. The coefficients of severe-profound SHL (r?=?0.595–0.790) were higher than mild-moderate SHL (r?=?0.434–0.687) across all frequencies.Conclusions and significance: ASSR was one valuable cross-check measure by providing frequency specific information in auditory assessment. 相似文献

Phone use is a critical communication event in many people''s lives. Audiologists have aimed to assist individuals with hearing loss and phone usage through the use of technology and counseling. To counsel effectively, all contributions to hearing difficulty on the phone must be considered, including the effects of smartphone cases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects on dB output caused by waterproof smartphone cases that cover the ear-level speaker. One waterproof case was tested with three smartphones, two iPhones, and one Android. A second waterproof case was tested with the two iPhones. Results revealed there was significant attenuation of the audio-signal by both waterproof smartphone cases that was great enough in one case/phone combination to potentially result in a complete lack of intelligibility of the signal. 相似文献

AbstractBackground: Approximately, 30–40% of patients experienced hearing loss under regular hemodialysis.Objective: This study reviewed our experience on treating acute hearing loss in patients under regular hemodialysis over the past two decades.Methods: Twenty-six patients having acute hearing loss under hemodialysis were divided into two groups based on their etiologies. Sixteen patients (16 ears) with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) were assigned to Group A and 10 patients (13 ears) with endolymphatic hydrops (EH) were assigned to Group B.Results: No significant difference was noted between Groups A and B, regardless of hemodialysis duration, clinical manifestation, underlying systemic diseases, blood examination, and vestibular test battery. In contrast, serum osmolality was significantly lower in Group B (292?±?11 mOsm/kg) than in Group A (310?±?11 mOsm/kg). Furthermore, Group B (40?±?14?dB) had better mean hearing level than Group A (87?±?21?dB) in the initial audiogram, and a higher hearing improvement rate (69%) than Group A (19%).Conclusions and significance: Both SSHL and EH are major causes for precipitating acute hearing loss in hemodialysis patients. Compared to SSHL, the less deteriorated MHL and lower serum osmolality in EH provide two clues for differentiating acute hearing loss in hemodialysis patients. 相似文献

ObjectiveMalleostapedotomy allows to completely by-pass the incus in otosclerosis surgery. Recently its use has been rivaled by hydroxyapatite cement for cases of mild and moderate necrosis of the incus. However, it remains gold standard for cases of extensive necrosis, incus dislocation, or epitympanic fixation. Modern heat-crimping pistons make surgery easier and safer. This study focuses on our experience with this technique.MethodsRetrospective analysis of patient’s files and pre- and post-operative audiograms, for cases of surgically treated otosclerosis with malleostapedotomy.ResultsTwelve patients underwent malleostapedotomy for otosclerosis between 2011 and 2019. Amongst them there were 10 revision surgeries and 2 primary cases. 75% had incus long-process necrosis, 17% had epitympanic fixation and one had a history of incus transposition. Nine patients (75%) had closure of air-bone gap (ABG) of <10 dB (p < 0.001) and 11 (92%) had a threshold of 20 dB (p < 0.001). Mean pre-operative ABG was 31 dB (15 dB–55 dB), and mean post-operative ABG was 7 dB (0 dB–21 dB; p < 0.001). There was no sensorineural hearing loss nor any other post-operative complication.ConclusionsMalleostapedotomy is a safe and reliable technique, allowing an ABG closure comparable to conventional incus to vestibule prosthesis. AbstractBackground: Recent advances in less-invasive surgery and electrode design allow for a high degree of hearing preservation (HP) after cochlear implantation (CI), although residual hearing still deteriorates in some patients. To date, the factors predictive of preserving residual hearing remain a controversial topic.Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive factors, including the etiology of hearing loss (HL) as a patient-related factor, influencing residual HP after CI.Methods: Forty-four patients (50 ears, 41 families) with residual acoustic hearing who underwent CI were included. Auditory thresholds before and at 6 months after initial activation were measured. Genetic testing was performed to identify the responsible genes for HL.Results: We identified the cause of HL in 21 families (51.2%). HP was marginally correlated with age at implantation, while it was independent of pre-operative low-frequency hearing thresholds, cochlear duct length, and electrode length. We found that patients who had pathogenic variants in the CDH23, MYO7A, or MYO15A gene showed statistically better HP scores compared with patients with HL due to other causes (p?=?.002).Conclusions: Identification of the etiology of HL using genetic testing is likely to facilitate the prediction of HP after implant surgery. 相似文献
