The current study investigated the effects of two exercise interventions on cognitive function amongst breast cancer survivors.

Pilot randomised-controlled trial.
Methods
Seventeen female cancer survivors (mean: 62.9 ± 7.8 years) were randomised into three groups: high-intensity interval training (HIIT, n = 6); moderate-intensity continuous training (MOD, n = 5); or wait-list control (CON, n = 6). The HIIT and MOD groups exercised on a cycle ergometer 3 days/week for 12-weeks. Primary outcomes were cognitive function assessments utilising CogState. Secondary outcomes were resting middle cerebral artery blood flow velocity, cerebrovascular reactivity and aerobic fitness (VO2peak). Data were analysed with General Linear Mixed Models and Cohen’s d effect sizes were calculated.
Results
All 17 participants who were randomised were available for follow-up analysis and adherence was similar for HIIT and MOD (78.7 ± 13.2% vs 79.4 ± 12.0%; p = 0.93). Although there were no significant differences in the cognitive and cerebrovascular outcomes, HIIT produced moderate to large positive effects in comparison to MOD and CON for outcomes including episodic memory, working memory, executive function, cerebral blood flow and cerebrovascular reactivity. HIIT significantly increased VO2peak by 19.3% (d = 1.28) and MOD had a non-significant 5.6% (d = 0.72) increase, compared to CON which had a 2.6% decrease.
Conclusions
This study provides preliminary evidence that HIIT may be an effective exercise intervention to improve cognitive performance, cerebrovascular function and aerobic fitness in breast cancer survivors. Considering the sample size is small, these results should be confirmed through larger clinical trials. 相似文献
Objective: To examine (i) the associations between physical activity dimensions, cardiorespiratory fitness and body composition and, (ii) the associations between physical activity dimensions, cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition and biomarkers of cardiometabolic health in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI).
Methods: A cross-sectional prospective cohort study with 7-day follow-up was conducted. Body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness and biomarkers of cardiometabolic health were measured in thirty-three participants with SCI (> 1 year post injury). Physical activity dimensions were objectively assessed over 7-days.
Results: Activity energy expenditure (r =.43), physical activity level (r =.39), and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) (r =.48) were significantly (P < 0.001) associated with absolute (L/min) peak oxygen uptake (?O2 peak). ?O2 peak was significantly higher in persons performing ≥150 MVPA minutes/week compared to <40 minutes/week (P?=?0.003). Individual physical activity dimensions were not significantly associated with biomarkers of cardiometabolic health. However, body composition characteristics (BMI, waist and hip circumference) showed significant (P < 0.04), moderate (r >.30) associations with parameters of metabolic regulation, lipid profiles and inflammatory biomarkers. Relative ?O2 peak (ml/kg/min) was moderately associated with only insulin sensitivity (r?=?0.37, P?=?0.03).
Conclusions: Physical activity dimensions are associated with cardiorespiratory fitness; however, stronger and more consistent associations suggest that poor cardiometabolic health is associated with higher body fat content. Given these findings, the regulation of energy balance should be an important consideration for researchers and clinicians looking to improve cardiometabolic health in persons with SCI. 相似文献
We have analysed B chromosome frequency for three consecutive years, B transmission rate at population and individual levels,
clutch size, egg fertility and embryo–adult viability in a natural population of the grasshopper Eyprepocnemis plorans containing two different B chromosome variants, i.e. B2 and B24, the second being derived from the first and having replaced it in nearby populations. From 2002 to 2003 the relative frequency
of both variants changed, although the differences did not reach significance. A mother–offspring analysis showed no significant
effect of any of the two B variants on clutch size, egg fertility or embryo–adult viability, but B24 was more efficiently transmitted than B2 through males from the 2002 season, which explains the observed frequency change. Controlled crosses, at individual level,
showed significant drive through some females for B24 but not for B2, suggesting that this difference in transmission rate might also be important for the substitution process. The analysis
of relative fitness for B2 and B24 carriers for all fitness components, as a whole, showed a significantly better performance of B24-carrying individuals, suggesting that the cumulative effect of these slight differences might contribute to the replacement
of B2 by B24.

Discrete cardiovascular fitness groups consisting of high-fit (n=10) and low-fit (n=9) men performed a well-learned vigilance task and their self-report, performance, and plasma catecholamine responses were compared. No significant differences were observed between the fitness groups on self-report or psychomotor performance responses to the vigilance task. However, the low-fit group took significantly longer than high-fit subjects to complete the first of three sets of anagrams administered immediately after the vigilance task. Plasma norepinephrine but not epinephrine response was greater in the low-fit group compared to their high-fit counterparts. The findings indicate that enhanced cardiovascular fitness may be characterized by an attenuated plasma norepinephrine response to a vigilance task with sustained cognitive performance subsequent to the task. 相似文献
Summary Resting pulmonary plasma and blood volumes (PPV and PBV), interventricular circulation time (IVCT), cardiac and stroke index (CI and SI), heart rate (HR), total plasma and blood volumes (PV and BV) were determined in athletes (two male groups representing different types of sport activities, and one female group) and compared with those of non-athletes (one male and one female group).In addition to high maximal aerobic power, the athletes were characterized by greater SI, BV and PV and lower resting HR than non-athletes. PPV and PBV were significantly larger and IVCT significantly longer in the trained than in the untrained groups, probably reflecting an improved capacity of the pulmonary circulation. PPV as per cent of PV was almost equal in all the groups, indicating the same distribution of plasma between the pulmonary and systemic circulation. The data also indicate that total blood volume is an important determinant of the magnitude of the pulmonary vascular bed. The increased volume of flowing blood and increased stroke volume in athletes probably allows for a reduction in flow velocity and thereby a reduction in kinetic energy. 相似文献
Mating ability differences between flies of different alcohol dehydrogenase (Adh) genotypes have been assessed in the temperature range 15 to 29°C for laboratory-adapted and field-derivedDrosophila melanogaster. Significant differences amongAdh genotypes were detected principally for the laboratory-adapted strains due to departures from random mating associated with heterozygote superiority at the relatively extreme temperature of 29°C, although mating ability differences could not be attributed directly to theAdh locus. The difference between the laboratory and the field populations can be explained by the effects of genetic back-ground manifested in the form of fitness differences, being enhanced for the laboratory-adapted flies as a consequence of the stress of laboratory culture. In contrast with larval survival and development time, laboratory and field flies do not differe appreciably in their overall abilities to obtain mates, which indicates that mating ability is a direct fitness character not greatly affected by laboratory culture. Summary Two experiments were carried out to compare the cardiorespiratory and metabolic effects of cross-country skiing and running training during two successive winters. Forty-year-old men were randomly assigned into skiing (n = 15 in study 1,n = 16 in study 2), running (n = 16 in study 1 andn = 16 in study 2) and control (n = 17 in study 1 andn = 16 in study 2) groups. Three subjects dropped out of the programme. The training lasted 9–10 weeks with 40-min exercise sessions three times each week. The training intensity was controlled at 75%–85% of the maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) using portable heart rate metres and the mean heart rate was 156–157 beats·min–1 in the training groups. In the pooled data of the two studies the mean increase in theVO2max (in ml·min–1·kg–1) on a cycle ergometer was 17% for the skiing group, 13% for the running group and 2% for the control group. The increase inVO2max was highly significant in the combined exercise group compared to the control group but did not differ significantly between the skiing and running groups. The fasting serum concentrations of lipoproteins and insulin did not change significantly in any of the groups. These results suggested that training by cross-country skiing and running of the same duration and intensity at each session for 9–10 weeks improved equally the cardiorespiratory fitness of untrained middle-aged men. 相似文献
