Polypropylene (PP) is an engineered thermoplastic polymer widely used in various applications. This work aims to enhance the properties of PP with the introduction of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) as nanofillers. Novel nanocomposite filaments were produced at 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 wt.% filler concentrations, following a melt mixing extrusion process. These filaments were then fed to a commercially available fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printer for the preparation of specimens, to be assessed for their mechanical, viscoelastic, physicochemical, and fractographic properties, according to international standards. Tensile, flexural, impact, and microhardness tests, as well as dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), Raman, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), melt flow volume index (MVR), and atomic force microscopy (AFM), were conducted, to fully characterize the filler concentration effect on the 3D printed nanocomposite material properties. The results revealed an improvement in the nanocomposites properties, with the increase of the filler amount, while the microstructural effect and processability of the material was not significantly affected, which is important for the possible industrialization of the reported protocol. This work showed that PP/TiO2 can be a novel nanocomposite system in AM applications that the polymer industry can benefit from.  相似文献

Recently, applications for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have expanded to include electric vehicles and electric energy storage systems, extending beyond power sources for portable electronic devices. The power sources of these flexible electronic devices require the creation of thin, light, and flexible power supply devices such as flexile electrolytes/insulators, electrode materials, current collectors, and batteries that play an important role in packaging. Demand will require the progress of modern electrode materials with high capacity, rate capability, cycle stability, electrical conductivity, and mechanical flexibility for the time to come. The integration of high electrical conductivity and flexible buckypaper (oxidized Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) film) and high theoretical capacity silicon materials are effective for obtaining superior high-energy-density and flexible electrode materials. Therefore, this study focuses on improving the high-capacity, capability-cycling stability of the thin-film Si buckypaper free-standing electrodes for lightweight and flexible energy-supply devices. First, buckypaper (oxidized MWCNTs) was prepared by assembling a free stand-alone electrode, and electrical conductivity tests confirmed that the buckypaper has sufficient electrical conductivity (10−4(S m−1) in LIBs) to operate simultaneously with a current collector. Subsequently, silicon was deposited on the buckypaper via magnetron sputtering. Next, the thin-film Si buckypaper freestanding electrodes were heat-treated at 600 °C in a vacuum, which improved their electrochemical performance significantly. Electrochemical results demonstrated that the electrode capacity can be increased by 27/26 and 95/93 μAh in unheated and heated buckypaper current collectors, respectively. The measured discharge/charge capacities of the USi_HBP electrode were 108/106 μAh after 100 cycles, corresponding to a Coulombic efficiency of 98.1%, whereas the HSi_HBP electrode indicated a discharge/charge capacity of 193/192 μAh at the 100th cycle, corresponding to a capacity retention of 99.5%. In particular, the HSi_HBP electrode can decrease the capacity by less than 1.5% compared with the value of the first cycle after 100 cycles, demonstrating excellent electrochemical stability.  相似文献

The current practice for identifying crystal hits for X-ray crystallography relies on optical microscopy techniques that are limited to detecting crystals no smaller than 5 μm. Because of these limitations, nanometer-sized protein crystals cannot be distinguished from common amorphous precipitates, and therefore go unnoticed during screening. These crystals would be ideal candidates for further optimization or for femtosecond X-ray protein nanocrystallography. The latter technique offers the possibility to solve high-resolution structures using submicron crystals. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to visualize nanocrystals (NCs) found in crystallization drops that would classically not be considered as “hits.” We found that protein NCs were readily detected in all samples tested, including multiprotein complexes and membrane proteins. NC quality was evaluated by TEM visualization of lattices, and diffraction quality was validated by experiments in an X-ray free electron laser. The emergence of X-ray free electron laser (X-FEL)–based serial femtosecond crystallography holds the promise of solving the 3D structure of proteins that can only crystallize as “nanocrystals” (NCs) or are highly sensitive to radiation damage (15). NCs appropriate for X-FEL experiments are considered to be 200 nm to 2 μm in size (6). This size is constrained primarily by the requirements of the NC delivery system to the X-FEL beam. In addition to allowing for structure resolution of NCs by X-FEL experiments, they provide the advantage of requiring no crystal cryoprotection because these experiments are performed at room temperature (3, 7). Given the opportunities that X-FELs offer to the field of crystallography, efficient methodologies to detect NCs from single crystallography drops and to optimize these identified conditions yielding NCs will be essential for future developments in structural biology. Current methods to detect the presence of NCs include dynamic light scattering (DLS), bright-field microscopy, birefringence microscopy, and intrinsic tryptophan UV fluorescence imaging, as well as technologies that rely upon second harmonic generation, such as second order nonlinear imaging of chiral crystals (SONICC) (8, 9) and X-ray powder diffraction. However, limitations of these imaging techniques include (i) ineffective detection of crystals smaller than 5 μm (8, 10), (ii) false-positive conditions as a result of interference from precipitate backgrounds (8, 10), and (iii) false-negative conditions resulting from the lack of tryptophan residues in the case of UV fluorescence and from the lack of chiral centers in the case of SONICC (11). Although DLS can accurately measure the size distribution of nanometer-sized protein aggregates, it is unable to distinguish unambiguously between amorphous and crystalline (12). Finally, X-ray powder diffraction, a method that has been applied to evaluate samples for the presence and concentration of NCs, requires more material than is produced in a single crystallization screening drop, and synchrotron radiation is usually required to produce measurable diffraction (13). In this study, we use UV fluorescence microscopy and DLS to detect crystallization drops containing NCs, followed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to identify protein NCs accurately and determine NC quality by evaluating the reciprocal lattice reflections in diffraction patterns calculated from images.  相似文献

Ultrasonography is a fundamental diagnostic imaging tool in everyday clinical practice. Here, we are unique in describing the use of functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as hyperechogenic material, suggesting their potential application as ultrasound contrast agents. Initially, we carried out a thorough investigation to assess the echogenic property of the nanotubes in vitro. We demonstrated their long-lasting ultrasound contrast properties. We also showed that ultrasound signal of functionalized MWCNTs is higher than graphene oxide, pristine MWCNTs, and functionalized single-walled CNTs. Qualitatively, the ultrasound signal of CNTs was equal to that of sulfur hexafluoride (SonoVue), a commercially available contrast agent. Then, we found that MWCNTs were highly echogenic in liver and heart through ex vivo experiments using pig as an animal model. In contrast to the majority of ultrasound contrast agents, we observed in a phantom bladder that the tubes can be visualized within a wide variety of frequencies (i.e., 5.5–10 MHz) and 12.5 MHz using tissue harmonic imaging modality. Finally, we demonstrated in vivo in the pig bladder that MWCNTs can be observed at low frequencies, which are appropriate for abdominal organs. Importantly, we did not report any toxicity of CNTs after 7 d from the injection by animal autopsy, organ histology and immunostaining, blood count, and chemical profile. Our results reveal the enormous potential of CNTs as ultrasound contrast agents, giving support for their future applications as theranostic nanoparticles, combining diagnostic and therapeutic modalities.  相似文献

Control of nanocrystal (NC) crystallinity currently raises great interest because of its potential benefits in both physics modeling and technological applications. Advances in methods for synthesizing perfect single-crystalline NCs are recent, so that the effect of crystallinity on NC properties has received only limited study and still needs to be properly investigated. Here, we report that crystallinity of gold NCs dramatically modifies their vibrations. Using low-frequency Raman scattering, we clearly demonstrate that single-domain NCs vibrate differently than their multiply twinned counterparts, through the splitting of the quadrupolar vibrations, which is only observed for the former. Using the resonant ultrasound approach, we calculate the vibrational frequencies of a gold sphere and show that elastic anisotropy induces a lift of degeneracy of the quadrupolar mode in good agreement with our experimental measurements. These findings open up challenging perspectives on using Raman spectroscopy to characterize nanocrystallinity.  相似文献

Micro-hole arrays have found wide applications in aerospace, precision instruments, and biomedicine. Among various methods of their production, including mechanical, laser, and electrical discharge, electrochemical machining (ECM) is considered the most lucrative due to its wide processing range, high surface quality, and excellent productivity. In particular, ultrasound-assisted through-mask ECM exhibits an enhanced machining precision due to ultrasonic cavitation, which promotes the removal of the electrolytic products and bubbles. In this study, the equation of cavitation bubble oscillation was derived and numerically solved to study the influence of six different parameters on the ultrasonic cavitation and electrolysis process, and their optimal values were determined. The feasibility of the proposed ultrasound-assisted through-mask ECM technology with the optimized parameters was experimentally corroborated by the fabrication of a high-quality hole array in an oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) MA956 superalloy.  相似文献

Nanopore-based analysis is currently an area of great interest in many disciplines with the potential for exceptionally versatile applications in medicine. This work presents a novel step towards fabrication of a single solid-state nanopore (SSSN) in a thin silicon membrane. Silicon nanopores are realized using multistep processes on both sides of n-type silicon-on-insulator (SOI) <100> wafer with resistivity 1–4 Ω·cm. An electrochemical HF etch with low current density (0.47 mA/cm2) is employed to produce SSSN. Blue LED is considered to emit light in a narrow band region which facilitates the etching procedure in a unilateral direction. This helps in production of straight nanopores in n-type Si. Additionally, a variety of pore diameters are demonstrated using different HF concentrations. Atomic force microscopy is used to demonstrate the surface morphology of the fabricated pores in non-contact mode. Pore edges exhibit a pronounced rounded shape and can offer high stability to fluidic artificial lipid bilayer to study membrane proteins. Electrochemically-fabricated SSSN has excellent smoothness and potential applications in diagnostics and pharmaceutical research on transmembrane proteins and label free detection.  相似文献

The design of aluminium–graphite metal matrix composites (MMCs) with advanced mechanical properties and high corrosion resistance is in demand for aerospace, transportation, and industrial applications. Breakthroughs in this field are limited due to the tendency of aluminium–graphite MMCs to corrode. In the present research, aluminium-based MMCs were produced by a relatively novel combined two-staged method. Multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were added into molten Al1070 and processed by high-pressure die casting followed by cyclic extrusion. For the composites produced by this method, it was previously demonstrated that mechanical properties are improved in comparison with pure aluminium alloys. In the current study, the manufactured Al–MWCNT composites were investigated by electrochemical tests (such as open circuit potential), potentiodynamic tests, linear polarization tests, and electrochemical impedance spectra to understand the corrosion resistance of the obtained composite material. The experimental testing of the corrosion resistance of Al–MWCNT MMCs showed that due to the advantages of the fabrication method, the addition of CNTs to aluminium does not cause a radical decrease of corrosion resistance.  相似文献

Lipid vesicles are an important class of biomaterials that have a wide range of applications, including drug delivery, cosmetic formulations and model membrane platforms on solid supports. Depending on the application, properties of a vesicle population such as size distribution, charge and permeability need to be optimized. Preparation methods such as mechanical extrusion and sonication play a key role in controlling these properties, and yet the effects of vesicle preparation method on vesicular properties and integrity (e.g., shape, size, distribution and tension) remain incompletely understood. In this study, we prepared vesicles composed of 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC) lipid by either extrusion or sonication, and investigated the effects on vesicle size distribution over time as well as the concomitant effects on the self-assembly of solid-supported planar lipid bilayers. Dynamic light scattering (DLS), quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) monitoring, fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) experiments were performed to characterize vesicles in solution as well as their interactions with silicon oxide substrates. Collectively, the data support that sonicated vesicles offer more robust control over the self-assembly of homogenous planar lipid bilayers, whereas extruded vesicles are vulnerable to aging and must be used soon after preparation.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of the packing density and particle size distribution of TiO2 nanoparticles on the mechanical properties of TiO2–epoxy nanocomposites (NCs). The uniform dispersion and good interfacial bonding of TiO2 in the epoxy resin resulted in improved mechanical properties with the addition of nanoparticles. Reinforcement nano-TiO2 particles dispersed in deionized water produced by three different ultrasonic dispersion methods were used; the ultrasonication effects were then compared. The nano-TiO2 suspension was added at 0.5–5.0 wt.%, and the mechanical and thermal properties of TiO2–epoxy NCs were compared using a universal testing machine, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The tensile strength of the NCs was improved by the dispersion strengthening effect of the TiO2 nanoparticles, and focused sonication improved the tensile strength the most when nano-TiO2 suspensions with a particle size of 100 nm or smaller were used. Thus, the reinforcing effect of TiO2 nanoparticles on the epoxy resin was observed, and the nano-TiO2 suspension produced by focused sonication showed a more distinct reinforcing effect.  相似文献

In this study, we explore the deformation of a polymer extrudate upon the deposition on a build platform, to determine the bonding widths between stacked strands in fused-filament fabrication. The considered polymer melt has an extremely high viscosity, which dominates in its deformation. Mainly considering the viscous effect, we derive analytical expressions of the flat width, compressed depth, bonding width and cross-sectional profile of the filament in four special cases, which have different combinations of extrusion speed, print speed and nozzle height. We further validate the derived relations, using our experimental results on acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), as well as existing experimental and numerical results on ABS and polylactic acid (PLA). Compared with existing theoretical and numerical results, our derived analytic relations are simple, which need less calculations. They can be used to quickly predict the geometries of the deposited strands, including the bonding widths.  相似文献

A novel strategy to fabricate a hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) sensor was developed by using platinum (Pt) electrodes modified with multi-wall carbon nanotube-platinum nanoparticle nanohybrids (MWCNTs/Pt nanohybrids). The process to synthesize MWCNTs/Pt nanohybrids was simple and effective. Pt nanoparticles (Pt NPs) were generated in situ in a potassium chloroplatinate aqueous solution in the presence of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and readily attached to the MWCNTs convex surfaces without any additional reducing reagents or irradiation treatment. The MWCNT/Pt nanohybrids were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), and the redox properties of MWCNTs/Pt nanohybrids-modified Pt electrode were studied by electrochemical measurements. The MWCNTs/Pt-modified electrodes exhibited a favorable catalytic ability in the reduction of H2O2. The modified electrodes can be used to detect H2O2 in the range of 0.01–2 mM with a lower detection limit of 0.3 μM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. The sensitivity of the electrode to H2O2 was calculated to be 205.80 μA mM−1 cm−2 at working potential of 0 mV. In addition, the electrodes exhibited an excellent reusability and long-term stability as well as negligible interference from ascorbic acid, uric acid, and acetaminophen.  相似文献

Objective

The nucleus pulposus (NP) of the intervertebral disc develops from the notochord. Humans and other species in which notochordal cells (NCs) disappear to be replaced by chondrocyte‐like mature NP cells (MNPCs) frequently develop disc degeneration, unlike other species that retain NCs. The reasons for NC disappearance are unknown. In humans, the change in cell phenotype (to MNPCs) coincides with changes that decrease nutrient supply to the avascular disc. We undertook this study to test the hypothesis that the consequent nutrient stress could be associated with NC disappearance.

Methods

We measured cell densities and metabolic rates in 3‐dimensional cultures of porcine NCs and bovine MNPCs, and we determined survival rates under conditions of nutrient deprivation. We used scanning electron microscopy to examine end plate porosity of discs with NCs and those with MNPCs. Nutrient–metabolite profiles and cell viability were calculated as a function of cell density and disc size in a consumption/diffusion mathematical model.

Results

NCs were more active metabolically and more susceptible to nutrient deprivation than were MNPCs. Hypoxia increased rates of glycolysis in NCs but not in MNPCs. Higher end plate porosity in discs with NCs suggested greater nutrient supply in keeping with higher nutritional demands. Mathematical simulations and experiments using an analog disc diffusion chamber indicated that a fall in nutrient concentrations resulting from increased diffusion distance during growth and/or a fall in blood supply through end plate changes could instigate NC disappearance.

Conclusion

NCs demand more energy and are less resistant to nutritional stress than MNPCs, which may shed light on the fate of NCs in humans. This provides important information about prospective NC tissue engineering approaches.

Aim: To determine whether the findings of microflow imaging (MFI), composed of a flash replenishment and a maximum intensity holding sequence, using contrast-enhanced sonography, correlate with the degree of histological differentiation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods: This study was approved by the institutional review board; patients gave informed consent. The samples comprised of 61 nodules histologically diagnosed as HCC: 20 well-differentiated, 26 moderately-differentiated, and 15 poorly-differentiated HCC. SonoVue was used as the ultrasound (US) contrast agent. The US equipment used was a SSA-770 A with the imaging mode set at MFI. MFI is an imaging method combining flash replenishment imaging and maximum intensity holding. Two independent readers (readers 1 and 2) classified the microflow images into four patterns: (i) normal pattern; (ii) cotton pattern; (iii) vascular pattern; and (iv) dead wood pattern. The results were compared with the degree of histopathological differentiation of the HCC. Results: In each of the 61 HCC, blood vessels in the tumor were clearly resolved down to their fine branches. With regard to the relationship between imaging patterns and thehistological findings, it was found (with high percentages) that the normal and cotton patterns were associated with well-differentiated HCC, that the vascular pattern was associated with moderately-differentiated HCC, and that the dead wood pattern was associated with poorly-differentiated HCC. If HCC with the normal and cotton patterns were assessed as well differentiated and those with the vascular or dead wood pattern were assessed as moderately or poorly differentiated, the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of these assessments were found to be 85%, 92.7%, and 90%, respectively, for reader 1, and 85%, 82.9%, and 83.6%, respectively, for reader 2. Conclusion: The angioarchitecture and hemodynamics of HCC could be evaluated in detail using MFI. The results of this study demonstrate the feasibility of a non-invasive preoperative diagnosis of the histological differentiation of HCC using MFI.  相似文献

The presented study deals with the fabrication of highly stable and active nanobiocatalysts based on Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) immobilization onto pristine and poly(dimethylsiloxane) modified MWCNTs. The MWCNTs/PDMS nanocomposites, containing 40 wt.% of the polymer with two molecular weights, were successfully synthesized via adsorption modification. The effect of PDMS chains length on the textural/structural properties of produced materials was studied by means of the nitrogen adsorption–desorption technique, Raman spectroscopy, and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. P-MWCNTs and MWCNTs/PDMS nanocomposites were tested as supports for lipase immobilization. Successful deposition of the enzyme onto the surface of P-MWCNTs and MWCNTs/PDMS nanocomposite materials was confirmed mainly using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. The immobilization efficiency, stability, and catalytic activity of the immobilized enzyme were studied, and the reusability of the produced biocatalytic systems was examined. The presented results demonstrate that the produced novel biocatalysts might be considered as promising materials for biocatalytic applications.  相似文献

Transient luminescence induced by high electric fields (>2.5 × 104 V/cm) was observed in aqueous solutions of 6,8-dihydroxypyrene-1,3-disulfonic acid. The light emission takes place both at the leading and the trailing edges of the perturbing electric square pulse. It occurs only during the variation of the applied field and disappears with a time constant of 0.5 μsec at constant field. In solid state phosphors, where this phenomenon has been reported previously, it is known as the Destriau effect. The mechanisms of excitation and emission can be explained by the electron injection model, in which the time constant of the luminescence decay is associated with the rate of formation of the space charge. This space charge appears as a separation of positive and negative charges into a double layer stabilized by the applied potential.  相似文献

Four different types of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used and compared for the treatment of benzoic acid contaminated water. The types of nanotubes used were: (1) non-purified (CNTsUP), as made; (2) purified (CNTsP), not containing the catalyst; (3) oxidized (CNTsOX), characterized by the presence of groups such as, –COOH; (4) calcined (CNTs900), with elimination of interactions between nanotubes. In addition, activated carbon was also used to allow for later comparison. The adsorption tests were conducted on an aqueous solution of benzoic acid at concentration of 20 mg/L, as a model of carboxylated aromatic compounds. After the adsorption tests, the residual benzoic acid concentrations were measured by UV-visible spectrometry, while the carbon nanotubes were characterized by TG and DTA thermal analyses and electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that the type of nanotubes thermally treated at 900 °C has the best performances in terms of adsorption rate and amounts of collected acid, even if compared with the performance of activated carbons.  相似文献

Titanium implants are commonly used because of several advantages, but their surface modification is necessary to enhance bioactivity. Recently, their surface coatings were developed to induce local antibacterial properties. The aim of this research was to investigate and compare mechanical properties of three coatings: multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), bi-layer composed of an inner MWCNTs layer and an outer TiO2 layer, and dispersion coatings comprised of simultaneously deposited MWCNTs and nanoCu, each electrophoretically deposited on the Ti13Nb13Zr alloy. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray electron diffraction spectroscopy, and nanoindentation technique were applied to study topography, chemical composition, hardness, plastic and elastic properties. The results demonstrate that the addition of nanocopper or titanium dioxide to MWCNTs coating increases hardness, lowers Young’s modulus, improves plastic and elastic properties, wear resistance under deflection, and plastic deformation resistance. The results can be attributed to different properties, structure and geometry of applied particles, various deposition techniques, and the possible appearance of porous structures. These innovative coatings of simultaneously high strength and elasticity are promising to apply for deposition on long-term titanium implants.  相似文献

We prepared overlap soldered joints of high-temperature superconducting tapes, using various materials and preparation conditions. In order to select the joints with optimal performance, we correlated their electrical properties (derived from current–voltage curves) with the microstructure of the respective joint cross-section by scanning electron microscopy. With the first group of joints, we focused on the effect of used materials on joint resistivity and critical current, and we found that the dominant role was played by the quality of the internal interfaces of the superconducting tape. Initial joint resistivities ranged in the first group from 41 to 341 nΩ·cm2. The second group of joints underwent a series of thermal cyclings, upon which the initial resistivity range of 35–49 nΩ·cm2 broadened to 25–128 nΩ·cm2. After the total of 135 thermal cycles, three out of four joints showed no signs of significant degradation. Within the limit of 100 thermal cycles, reliable soldered joints can be thus prepared, with normalized resistivity not exceeding 1.4 and with normalized critical current above the value of 0.85.  相似文献

High uric acid levels cause different clinic conditions. One of them is hyperuricemia, which leads to kidney damage. A solution for eliminating uric acid in the blood is by hemodialysis, which is performed using nanocomposite membranes. In this work, Nylon 6 nanocomposites were synthesized with modified carbon black (MCB), which were considered candidate materials for hemodialysis membranes. The modification of carbon black was made with citric acid using the variable-frequency ultrasound method. The new MCB was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and dispersion tests. Nylon 6/MCB nanocomposites were processed using the ultrasound-assisted melt-extrusion method to improve the dispersion procedure of the nanoparticles. The Nylon 6/MCB nanocomposites were characterized by FTIR, TGA, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). These were assessed for the absorption of toxins and hemocompatibility. MBC and nanocomposites showed excellent uric acid removal (78–82%) and hemocompatibility (1.6–1.8%). These results suggest that Nylon 6/MCB nanocomposites with low loading percentages can be used on a large scale without compatibility problems with blood.  相似文献
