Postscript: Commentary: Developmental care: Acceptable or not?

We are departing from our usual style of a dialogue for this issue of Newborn and Infant Nursing Reviews because the issues and concerns with developmental care are essentially the same as those we discussed in the previous issue on complemental and alternative therapies (Volume 1: Issue 4, December 2001). Instead of a dialogue between the editors and guest editors, Dr Kenner has written the following commentary to stimulate your thinking about the role of developmental care in your nursing practice.

In most cases of congestive heart failure in which the patients are men, the patients' ability to return to work is the most important factor in permitting them to recover their self-esteem. The patient's functional capacity, as determined by means of an exercise test, is most important in determining the amount of work that he may do safely. Obviously, an appraisal of the patient's job must be made and matched against his functional capacity.

Revascularization of the ischemic heart is feasible in selected cases of coronary artery disease by implantation of the internal mammary artery into the myocardium. Of the first 78 patients undergoing Vineberg's operation at the Cleveland Clinic Hospital, 75 are alive. In 80 per cent a patent implant has been demonstrated. Direct communication between the implant and the coronary artery distal to the original obstruction is demonstrable by internal mammary arteriography.     

Post-Traumatic Headache: Commentary: An Overview

The history of post-traumatic headache begins in the middle of the 19th century, and its latest iteration has been defined in the International Headache Classification of 2004. Contrary to the latter, there are instances when mild head injury without symptoms or signs of concussion may evoke the pathophysiological changes of migraine. The mechanisms of chronic post-traumatic headache and the associated syndrome are complex and include pathophysiological, psychological, and socioeconomic factors. Treatment of these headaches is similar to that of the primary headaches with particular attention to nonpharmacological measures.
