A single oral administration of living poliomyelitis vaccine of immunologic type II (Sabin strain) to albino mice weighing 12–14 g is followed by an increase in the free sialic acid content from the 5th to the 20th days and in the bound sialic acid content from the 20th to the 45th day from the beginning of immunization in the small intestine of the vaccinated animals.Laboratory of Immunopathology, D. The effect of solubilization of deoxyribonucleoproteins (DNP) in a medium of near-physiological ionic strength after treatment with the mutagen N-nitroso-N-methylurea (NMU) is highly dependent on the NMU concentration. To convert DNP into a soluble state, the critical number of groups in the DNA and protein must evidently be modified. On the basis of data obtained by the circular dichroism method and by viscosimetry it is concluded that after treatment with NMU the DNP complex becomes soluble in solvents with near-physiological ionic strength largely as a result of labilization and dissociation of the DNA-protein bonds.Laboratory of Biophysics, Institute of Medical Genetics, Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR. Changes in the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) level in the human fetal pituitary were studied by biological methods. FSH was detected in the fetal pituitary throughout the period of investigation: from the 8th to the 34th week. In rat parotid gland slices incubated in vitro ornithine decarboxylase activity and the rate of protein synthesis were determined. A circahoralian rhythm of enzyme activity preceding inphase fluctuations in the range of protein synthesis was found. Chronic administration of potassium orotate to young rats in a dose of 75 mg/kg body weight from the 5th to the 14th day and 150 mg/kg from the 15th to the 30th day of life sharply accelerates growth and functional maturation of the animals. The rate of growth of the experimental animals between the 5th and 14th days and the 21st and 30th days was much greater than in the control rats, but between the 14th and 21st days there was no significant difference. The acceleration of growth from the 5th to the 14th day is accounted for by the greater activity of the autonomic systems (increased oxygen consumption, respiration rate, and heart rate at rest) than in the control. Between the 21st and 30th days the acceleration of growth in the experimental rats was connected with an earlier decrease in activity of the autonomic systems and sympathicoadrenal control mechanisms, as shown by a decrease in the catecholamine concentration in the adrenals and brain.Laboratory of Age Physiology and Pathology, Institute of Normal and Pathological Physiology, Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. The respiratory organs of newborn rats infected intranasally with a broth culture ofMycoplasma hominis were studied by histological, histochemical, and immunofluorescence methods. Tracheitis and, suppurative and interstitial pneumonia with a hemorrhagic component were observed 24 h after infection and lasted until the 7th day of the experiment. During the same period, specific fluorescence ofM. hominis antigen was detected by the immunofluorescence method. In rabbits receiving cholesterol with the diet for 3–4 months the accumulation of total cholesterol in the aorta and the degree of severity of atherosclerosis of the aorta were reduced by administration of ethyrazole and parmidine.
