The genera Mitophis and Tetracheilostoma comprise two extant lineages of small-sized threadsnakes that exclusively inhabit several islands of the West Indies. Even though leptotyphlopids are known for their extremely reduced size, miniaturization has only been hypothesized to reflect insular dwarfism for the genus Tetracheilostoma. Herein, we aim to describe the comparative osteology and visceral morphology of both genera, investigating and discussing their several internal morphological simplifications and novelties. Our results indicate that these taxa exhibit several autapomorphies mostly concentrated in the dorsoposterior skull elements and maxillae, as well as in their axial skeleton and viscera. These novelties and simplifications are most likely a result of extreme miniaturization driven by the evolutionary constraints or ecological opportunities possibly imposed by the “island rule.” Both Mitophis and Tetracheilostoma distinguish from all other Epictinae in lacking a dentigerous process in the maxillae, by having the prootic fused to the otooccipital, and by the lack (except in comparison to a few Epictia) of a cervical vertebrae intercentrum I. Additionally, Mitophis can be distinguished from other Epictinae by the participation of the unpaired supraoccipital in the dorsal border of the foramen magnum, by the absence of the pleurapophyses in the caudal vertebrae, by a higher number of liver segments, and by the extreme degeneration of the pelvic rudiments. Tetracheilostoma differs from other Epictinae by lacking a distinct supraoccipital, which is fused to the parietal. Thus, our results reinforce that morphological characters are extremely valuable for leptotyphlopid systematics given their extremely conserved external morphology.  相似文献

“Scolecophidians” are traditionally known for their several skull and lower jaw autapomorphies, being conspicuously different from alethinophidian snakes in terms of skull shape and function. Although typically known for the absence of any kinetic joint in the skull dermatocranium and neurocranium—mostly due to an adaptation to fossorial habit, literature data have previously suggested a possible cranial kinesis for individuals of Afrotyphlops punctatus based on observations of live and preserved individuals. Given such observations, herein we aim to describe in detail the skull of A. punctatus based on CT-scan images of five specimens, evaluating the skull morphology and inferred function, and also providing valuable discussion on the skull osteology of the genus. Our results suggest that the skull of A. punctatus is similar to other blindsnakes in lacking any trace of snout, or even a frontal–parietal articulation. We also discuss possible osteological data that might be systematically relevant for Typhlopidae both interspecifically and intergenerically.  相似文献

Scolecophidians are small fossorial snakes that exhibit several osteological innovations, most of which driven by their extreme body miniaturization. Considering that data on skull morphology has proven to be relevant in terms of scolecophidian systematics and morphofunctional evolution, herein, we aim to describe in detail the skull, lower jaw, and cervical vertebrae of Amerotyphlops brongersmianus and A. reticulatus. Our results suggest that the investigated osteology of Amerotyphlops resembles several new world typhlopid species, with reduced interspecific variation in the basicranium, lower jaw and cervical vertebrae. Both species exhibit characters states that are typically conserved intragenerically amongst typhlopoids, such as the presence of a single parietal, paired supraoccipitals, and otooccipitals that are in contact medially, and the basioccipital participating in the formation of the foramen magnum. We discuss possible systematically important osteological skull variations among typhlopoids and provide a comprehensive comparison of these taxa based on literature and data gathered herein.  相似文献

This study described the detailed osteological features of the Setouchi salamander Hynobius setouchi. H. setouchi, which is endemic to central Japan, was recently delineated from the wide range of H. nebulosus species based on molecular and external morphological characteristics. However, the osteological features of the species belonging to the genus Hynobius have not been examined, which has hindered the detailed understanding of morphological diversity in the genus. To address this problem, this study elucidated the osteological features of the salamander using micro-computed tomography scanning and whole-mount double staining methods. The articular, a part of the hypobranchial I, a part of coracoid, pubis, carpus, and tarsus were cartilaginous in small-sized individuals and were partially or completely ossified in large-sized individuals. The degree of ossification varied in the operculum, basibranchial II, and ascending process of the palatoquadrate. However, ossification was not associated with body size. The lacrimal, ossified manus, and ossified pes exhibited varying degrees of articulation or fusion irrespective of body size. Moreover, the cranium and tarsus of H. setouchi exhibited several unique characteristics. These osteological characteristics will aid in revising the taxonomy and phylogeny of the Hynobius species.  相似文献

Despite its growing use in anatomical and ecological studies, the morphological variability and ontogenetic development of the bony labyrinth have very rarely been investigated in ruminants. Here we study its morphology in 15 adult and 10 juvenile specimens in the three extant tragulid ruminant genera. Intraspecific and interspecific variability is quantified using morphometric and 3D geometric morphometrics analyses. The bony labyrinth of Tragulus, Hyemoschus, and Moschiola is strikingly different, clustering in clearly different morphospaces despite similar ecological adaptations. Although the bony labyrinths within two species of the same genus cannot be distinguished from each other based on the chosen semi‐landmarks, discrete interspecific differences exist. We were able to show for the first time that an artiodactyl mammal in a late fetal stage possesses an almost fully formed bony labyrinth similar to that of adults. No significant change either occurs in size or morphology after ossification of the petrosal bone. Some intraspecific variation is observed on the shape of the lateral semi‐circular canal, the size and shape of the common crus, the coil of the cochlea or the stapedial ratio. Variable structures are expected to be highly informative characters for a large cladistic analysis. They can be used for phylogenetic studies in ruminants. Incorporating juvenile specimens in studies is not problematic, as they fall within the morphological range of adults.  相似文献

Describing osteological development is of great importance for understanding vertebrate phenotypic variations, form-functional transitions and ecological adaptations. Anurans exhibit dramatic changes in their morphology, habitat preferences, diet and behaviour between the tadpole and frog stages. However, the anatomical details of their cranial and postcranial development have not been extensively studied, especially in Microhylidae. In this work, we studied the microhylid Microhyla fissipes, commonly known as the ornamented pygmy frog, a small-sized frog with fast metamorphosis. Its osteological development was comprehensively described based on 120 cleared and stained specimens, including six tadpoles for each stage between 28 and 45, six juveniles and six adults. Additionally, 22 osteological traits of these specimens involved in food acquisition, respiration, audition and locomotion were selected and measured to reflect the changes in tadpole ecological functions during metamorphosis. Our study provides the first detailed qualitative and quantitative developmental information about these structures. Our results have confirmed that skeletal elements (viz., neopalatines, omosternum, clavicles and procoracoids) absent in adults are not detected during development. Our data reveal that morphologically, radical transformations of the cranial structures related to feeding and breathing are completed within stages 42–45 (72 h), but the relative length and width of these skeletons have changed in earlier stages. The postcranial skeletons correlated with locomotion are well developed before stage 42 and approach the adult morphology at stage 45. Indeed, the relative length of the pectoral girdle and forelimb reaches the adult level at stage 42 and stage 45, respectively, whereas that of the vertebral column, pelvic girdle and hind limbs increases from their appearance until reaching adulthood. Based on published accounts of 19 species from Neobatrachia, Mesobatrachia and Archaeobatrachia, cranial elements are among the first ossified skeletons in most studied species, whereas sphenethmoids, neopalatines, quadratojugals, mentomeckelians, carpals and tarsals tend to ossify after metamorphosis. These results will help us to better understand the ecomorphological transformations of anurans from aquatic to terrestrial life. Meanwhile, detailed morphological and quantitative accounts of the osteological development of Microhyla fissipes will provide a foundation for further study.  相似文献

Liotyphlops is a genus of blindsnakes distributed in Central and South America. We reviewed specimens of Liotyphlops albirostris along its current distribution range and, based on morphological data and ecological niche modeling analyses, we restrict the geographical range of L. albirostris and validate three previously described species. In this revision, we describe the morphological variation in the populations from Panamá, Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela, and propose a new taxonomic arrangement. We revalidate three previous synonyms of L. albirostris to full species status, while dividing the populations from Colombia in two subspecies―one attributed to a previously recognized species from the Caribbean region, and a new one from the Andean region. The new species differs from L. albirostris from Panamá in cephalic scale arrangements that effectively reduces the previously reported variability of these scales in L. albirostris. We also explore some osteological differences that are congruent with the variation observed. We hope that the recognition of these new species better represents the diversity within Liotyphlops, helping to bring these new species out of their cryptic status so that they will be considered in future conservation efforts.  相似文献

Water voles of the genus Arvicola constitute an excellent subject to investigate to which extent function affects postnatal developmental growth of limb structures in phylogenetically close species. We performed a comparative analysis of postweaning femur form changes between Arvicola sapidus (semiaquatic) and Arvicola scherman (fossorial) using three-dimensional landmark-based geometric morphometrics. In both species, we observed greater femur robustness in juvenile individuals than in adult ones, probably due to the accommodation of high loads on the bone during initial locomotor efforts. Significant interspecific differences were also found in the femur size and shape of adult specimens, as well as in the postnatal allometric and phenotypic trajectories. In terms of phenotypic variation, fossorial water voles show relatively wider third and lesser trochanters, and greater femur robustness than A. sapidus, characters associated to the digging activity. In contrast, A. sapidus displays a slight increase of the greater trochanter in comparison with A. scherman, which is seemingly an adaptive response for enhancing propulsion through the water. Results evidence that certain morphological traits and differences between A. sapidus and A. scherman in the allometric and phenotypic trajectories of the femur are associated with their different locomotor mode.  相似文献

Sigmodontine rats are one of the most diverse components of the Neotropical mammal fauna. They exhibit a wide ecological diversity and a variety of locomotor types that allow them to occupy different environments. To explore the relationship between morphology and locomotor types, we analyzed traits of the postcranial osteology (axial and appendicular skeletons) of 329 specimens belonging to 51 species and 29 genera of sigmodontines exhibiting different locomotor types. In this work, postcranial skeletal characters of these rats are considered in an ecomorphological study for the first time. Statistical analyses showed that of the 34 osteological characters considered, 15 were related to the locomotor types studied, except for ambulatory. However, character mapping showed that climbing and jumping sigmodontines are the only taxa exhibiting clear adaptations in their postcranial osteology, which are highly consistent with the tendencies described in many other mammal taxa. Climbing, digging and swimming rats presented statistically differences in traits associated with their vertebral column and limbs, whereas jumping rats showed modifications associated with all the skeletal regions. Our data suggest that sigmodontine rats retain an all‐purpose morphology that allows them to use a variety of habitats. This versatility is particularly important when considering the lack of specialization of sigmodontines for a specific locomotor mode. Another possible interpretation is that our dataset probably did not consider relevant information about these groups and should be increased with other types of characters (e.g. characters from the external morphology, myology, etc.).  相似文献

The heartworm Acanthocheilonema spirocauda (Leidy, Proc Acad Nat Sci Philadelphia 10:110–112, 1858) Anderson, 1992 is described from material collected from harbour seals in Scandinavia and compared with types and other specimens described by Anderson (Can J Zool 37:481–493, 1959) from harbour seals in eastern USA. Most morphometric characters of the material from USA fall within the ranges established for the Scandinavian one. Some intraspecific variability in the organisation of papillae on the male tail was detected among the Scandinavian specimens. Differences between the specimens from Scandinavia and Eastern USA are also found in the organisation of papillae on the tail of males and females. An excretory pore was not discernible, but a clearly hemizonid-like structure is described. For the first time, scanning electron micrographs present external morphological structures of the species.  相似文献

The taxonomy ofEchinococcus is reviewed and consideration given to speciation within the genus. The morphological and other biological characteristics of all species and subspecies so far described are given, and evidence for the existence of other intraspecific variants is presented. A total of 16 species have been described but only four have well-defined characteristics and are generally accepted as being taxonomically valid;E. granulosus, E. multilocularis, E. oligarthrus andE. vogeli. The taxonomic status of intraspecific variants is uncertain. Some authorities consider that the majority of described subspecies are invalid taxonomically. However, concern is expressed that previous taxonomic considerations ofEchinococcus have not taken into account the nature of its reproductive mechanism which, like that of most cestodes, defies the application of traditional taxonomic concepts and definitions derived from dioecious cross-fertilising organisms. At the present time intraspecific variants ofEchinococcus are referred to as strains. The existence of such strains, particularly ofE. granulosus, in different parts of the world is firmly established. Their importance in the epidemiology of hydatidosis has high-lighted the needed to establish criteria for their differentiation and characterisation. The limitations of morphology as a sole differential criterion are emphasised. Attention is given to recent studies on strain variation which have demonstrated the value of applying several different criteria in which the developmental, physiological and biochemical characteristics of different strains are compared in conjunction with morphological investigations.  相似文献
