BACKGROUND: Obesity, hyperlipemia and cardiovascular complications contribute to a significant proportion of morbidity and mortality of renal transplant patients and have negative effects on renal survival. Aim of the present study was to evaluate the main abnormalities in body composition and the prevalence of some cardiovascular risk factors in a population of hemodialyzed (HD) patients awaiting renal transplantation. METHODS: We studied 151 HD patients, all included in a waiting list for renal transplantation, 97 males and 54 females, with mean age 47.4+/-12 years. Patients were divided into three groups according to their body mass index (BMI) (kg/m2): 18.5 to 24.9 (normoweight, NW); 25.0 to 29.9 (overweight, OW); > or =30 (obese, OB). The body composition measurements were obtained the day after the mid-week HD session using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). RESULTS: We found that 47 patients were NW (31%), while 56 were OW (37%), and 48 were OB (32%). BIA-measured body cell mass was (BCM) significantly increased in the OW as compared with the NW group (P<0.001), but, of note, no significant difference was found in OB group in comparison with the OW. Total cholesterol and triglycerides plasma levels were significantly elevated in OW and OB patients with respect to NW (P<0.05) and an increased prevalence of diabetes was seen in OB patients (NW: 6%, OW: 5%, OB: 12%). CONCLUSIONS: These data show that a large proportion of patients awaiting renal transplant are overweight or obese and a consistent part of them have other cardiovascular risk factors associated. Furthermore, obese HD patients have a BCM lower than predicted on the basis of BMI and show an altered metabolic profile. A better understanding of the characteristics of patients included in the renal transplant waiting list is crucial in order to design prospective studies that aim to define the proper risk profile for the selection of patients.  相似文献

Currently, Mexico holds one of the top rankings in childhood obesity worldwide. This present qualitative study aims to explore and describe mothers’ perceptions concerning the body weight of their children and, based on these findings, be able to arrive at a typology. Research included 91 semi‐structured interviews administered to mothers of children who were underweight (UW), normal weight (NW), overweight (OW) or obese (OB). The data were collected between June 2011 and December 2013. The information was analysed with MAXQDA qualitative software. It was found that overestimated perception in UW children is observed in mothers who fear gaining weight. Mothers of NW children tend to gauge the weight of their children close to that which is normal. OW children are appropriately perceived by their mothers; however, these mothers are not concerned by this situation because for them, it is something temporary that will disappear as the child grows. The majority of boys who were OB were underestimated in their weight; those who were appropriately perceived showed class II or III obesity. Mothers typically perceived OW and OB girls with greater precision. The mothers who perceived obesity in their sons or daughters felt responsible, which motivated them to change their children's habits and behaviours. Therefore, health professionals should communicate and help these mothers recognise OW and OB status in their children. Furthermore, the importance of prevention should be stressed when a child is OW, and they should be informed of the high health risks that accompany obesity.  相似文献

Obesity is associated with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Obesity and metabolic abnormalities resulting in low-grade inflammation can increase the risk of developing NASH and HCC. NASH, a risk factor for HCC, is characterized by increased inflammation, lipid accumulation, and liver injury. Obesogenic proteins modulate signaling pathways that induce physiological changes including lipogenesis, ROS, and inflammation. Silibinin, a polyphenol in milk thistle seed, has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have yet to determine whether silibinin can be used to dissect the obesity-cancer link to delay progression of liver cancer. Using an in vitro model, sera from obese (OB), overweight (OW), or normal weight (NW) males (based on BMI) were used to determine the efficacy of silibinin to reduce the pro-tumorigenic properties of obesity. HepG2 cells were exposed to OB, OW, NW ± silibinin and tested for growth, ROS, lipogenesis, MMP-9, invasion and protein expression. Silibinin suppressed obesity-induced growth, ROS, lipogenesis, MMP-9, and cell invasion. These physiological changes corresponded with decreased FASN, IL-6, IL-1B, and phosphorylated Erk. We describe the differential effect of sera from OB, OW, and NW males on characteristics relevant for liver cancer and the potential use of silibinin to mitigate these effects.  相似文献

The effect of short duration exercise (EXR) on food intake (FI) and energy balance (EB) is not well understood in either normal weight (NW) or overweight (OW) and obese (OB) 9-14 years old children. Our purpose was to describe the effects of activity and a glucose drink on short term FI, appetite, and EB in NW, OW, and OB boys. Each boy received in random order either a noncaloric Sucralose sweetened control or glucose (1.0 g·kg(-1) body weight) drink 5 min after either exercise (EXR) or sedentary (SED) activity. Boys exercised for 15 min at their ventilation threshold (V(T)) in experiment 1 or at 25% above their V(T) in experiment 2. FI was measured at an ad libitum pizza meal 30 min after drink consumption. FI was lower after the glucose drink (p < 0.001) but not affected by activity, even though EXR increased appetite (p < 0.001). OW/OB boys ate more total food than NW boys (p = 0.020). EB over the duration of the experiments was reduced by EXR in OW/OB boys (p = 0.013) but not in NW boys in either experiment (p > 0.05). We conclude that intake regulation in OW/OB boys in response to a glucose drink is similar to NW boys, but it may be less responsive to activity.  相似文献

Prior work suggests that actual, but not estimated, energy density drives the reinforcing value of food and that energy from fat and carbohydrate can interact to potentiate reward. Here we sought to replicate these findings in an American sample and to determine if the effects are influenced by body mass index (BMI). Thirty participants with healthy weight (HW; BMI 21.92 ± 1.77; M ± SD) and 30 participants with overweight/obesity (OW/OB; BMI 29.42 ± 4.44) rated pictures of common American snacks in 120-kcal portions for liking, familiarity, frequency of consumption, expected satiety, healthiness, energy content, energy density, and price. Participants then completed an auction task where they bid for the opportunity to consume each food. Snacks contained either primarily carbohydrate, primarily fat, or roughly equal portions of fat and carbohydrate (combo). Replicating prior work, we found that participants with HW bid the most for combo foods in linear mixed model analyses. This effect was not observed among individuals with OW/OB. Additionally, in contrast with previous reports, our linear regression analyses revealed a negative relationship between the actual energy density of the snacks and bid amount that was mediated by food price. Our findings support altered macronutrient reinforcement in obesity and highlight potential influences of the food environment on the regulation of food reward.  相似文献

Objective Obesity in adults is associated with inflammation and oxidative stress. Whether or not this phenotype is reflected in human milk (HM) composition, or may impact infant growth remains unknown. We investigated whether HM from overweight/obese (OW/Ob) mothers exhibited higher concentrations of inflammatory cytokines and markers of oxidative stress. We also correlated these bioactive components with infant growth patterns. Methods This was an observational cohort of 56 breastfeeding mothers and their infants [33 normal weight (NW) and 23 OW/Ob]. Infants were followed until 6 months of age and HM collected at 2-weeks and 4-months. Results Markers of oxidative stress, 8-hydroxy-deoxyguanosine (8OHdG) and 4-hydroxynonenol (HNE), decreased in HM over time (p?<?0.001) and did not differ between NW and OW/Ob women. Concentrations of inflammatory cytokines, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α, were all inter-correlated (p?<?0.001) but did not differ between NW and OW/Ob women. HM fat, protein, lactose, and total calories did not differ between NW and OW/Ob women. Infant growth patterns did not differ by group. In a model of infant weight-for-length-Z score trajectory, there was a significant interaction between both lactose and 8OHdG with maternal group: HM lactose and 8OHdG concentrations were both positively associated with increases in WLZ trajectory only among infants breastfed by OW/Ob mothers. Conclusions for Practice HM composition was relatively stable between NW and OW/Ob women. In exclusively breastfed infants, HM concentrations of lactose and 8OHdG, a marker of oxidative stress, may contribute to regulation of infant weight gain, especially among infants of OW/Ob women.  相似文献

Body image plays an important role in the management of body weight, especially among female adolescents. This study examined the differences in body image perception, weight management knowledge, eating behaviour and physical activity between overweight and normal weight Malaysian female adolescents. Body mass index screening was done on 588 secondary school students to identify overweight (OW) and normal weight (NW) subjects. A BMI-for-age of => 85th percentile and between => 5th and <85th percentile were used as cut-offs for identifying suitable subjects of overweight and normal weight, respectively. Fifty girls identified as being OW were matched for age and ethnicity with 50 NW students. Subjects completed a self-administered questionnaire on demographics, eating behaviour and physical activity, a weight management knowledge inventory (WMKI) and the Body Silhouette Chart. The study sample comprised Malays (40%), Chinese (30%) and Indians (30%) with a mean age of 14.76 ± 1.15 years. The majority of them were from families with a monthly household income of less than RM1,000. Significantly more NW subjects (χ2=6.112, p=0.013) than OW subjects had incorrect perception of their current body weight status. The WMKI revealed that more OW subjects (64%) than NW subjects (52%) had a low level of weight management knowledge. Eating behaviour patterns were not significantly different between OW and NW subjects, but more OW subjects skipped one or more daily meals as compared to their NW counterparts (χ2=0.174, p=0.010). Physical activity patterns were similar in both groups. Healthy eating and physical activity promotion programmes in schools should include sound weight management practices.  相似文献

目的 本研究探讨母亲养育实践与婴幼儿饮食行为对儿童超重肥胖的影响。方法 采用目的抽样法,选取徐州市2所医院及2个社区卫生服务中心的6 ~ 24月龄婴幼儿及其母亲为研究对象,母亲完成婴幼儿喂养类型和饮食行为问卷。根据儿童身长和体重,计算年龄别体质指数Z值(body mass index - for age z - score,BMIZ),BMIZ + 2为儿童超重肥胖。采用二元logistic回归分析母亲养育实践与婴幼儿饮食行为对儿童超重肥胖的影响。结果 本研究共回收882份有效问卷,儿童超重肥胖发生率为15.65%。二元logistic回归结果表明,敏感型养育(OR = 0.234,95%CI:0.159 ~ 0.344),饱腹反应(OR = 0.467,95%CI:0.336 ~ 0.649)和进食缓慢的饮食行为(OR = 0.737,95%CI:0.552 ~ 0.984)是儿童超重肥胖的保护因素;食物反应的饮食行为(OR = 2.369,95%CI:1.797 ~ 3.122),限制(OR = 2.359,95%CI:1.530 ~ 3.640)和纵容型养育(OR = 1.743,95%CI:1.250 ~ 2.431)是儿童超重肥胖的危险因素。结论 敏感型养育,饱腹反应和进食缓慢的饮食行为降低儿童超重肥胖的发生风险;食物反应的饮食行为,限制和纵容型养育增加儿童超重肥胖的发生风险。  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the distribution of overweight and obesity and its relationship with socio-economic and behavioural factors in a developing-country population undergoing rapid nutritional transition. DESIGN: Cross-sectional house-to-house survey in urban Gambia. SUBJECTS: Four groups of 50 subjects were sampled as follows: young men (YM, 14-25 years), young women (YW, 14-25 years), older men (OM, 35-50 years) and older women (OW, 35-50 years). MEASUREMENTS: Several socio-economic and behavioural factors were investigated. Composite indices for socio-economic status, education, healthy lifestyle and western influences were created. Body weight, height, waist and hip circumferences were measured and body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Body composition was assessed by leg-to-leg bioimpedance. Overweight was defined as BMI=25.0-29.9 kg/m(2) and obesity as BMI>or=30.0 kg/m(2). RESULTS: There were highly significant gender and age differences in overweight (YM=0%, YW=10%, OM=6% and OW=34%) and obesity (YM=0%, YW=4%, OM=6% and OW=50%). Only 16% of OW were neither overweight nor obese compared to 88% of OM. OW had a higher fat mass percent (38.4%) than other groups, while fat-free mass (kg) was significantly higher in males than females with YW having the lowest value. Young generations were more educated and more influenced by western ideals than OM and OW. Weight gain was not always associated with weight concern and many overweight/obese subjects did not perceive themselves as overweight. CONCLUSION: Social and behavioural changes are already creating a perceptible 'generational gap' among this population undergoing rapid transition. The improved education and current lean status of the younger adults offers opportunities for preventative interventions. These need to be specially targeted at women.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: We determined the effect of clothing type on the validity of air-displacement plethysmography (ADP) to estimate percentage of body fat (%BF) and ascertain if these effects differ by body mass index (BMI). METHODS: The %BF by dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and %BF, density, and body volume by ADP were assessed in 132 healthy adults classified by normal (N; 18.5-24.9 kg/m2), overweight (OW; 25-29.9 kg/m2), and obese (OB; 30-39.9 kg/m2) BMIs. RESULTS: Compared with DXA, ADP underestimated (P < 0.0001) %BF from scrubs (SC) and t-shirt/shorts (TS) in N (11.4%; 8.6%) and OW (6.8%; 4.9%) BMI groups, respectively. ADP compared with DXA overestimated (P < 0.0006) %BF in the OW group (1.2%), but underestimated (P < 0.0001) it in the N group (2.4%). ADP also overestimated (P < 0.006) %BF in the OB group wearing spandex (SP; 4.8%), but not in those wearing SC (0.7%; P = 0.10) and TS (0.5%; P = 0.22) versus DXA. CONCLUSION: All three clothing types showed significant error in estimating %BF with ADP compared with DXA in N and OW BMI. Use of spandex provided the least error and is the preferred attire to obtain valid body composition results when testing N and OW subjects. However, SP provided the greatest error in the OB group. Error in ADP %BF in OB was minimal in SC and TS and similar to the within-subject variability in %BF estimates with ADP. Thus, TS and SC are acceptable alternatives to SP in adults with excess body weight.  相似文献

IntroductionThe effect of obesity on lung function in children stratified by asthma status is not fully elucidated. We evaluated the impact of adiposity indices, including Body Mass Index (BMI) and estimated fat mass (eFT), on lung changes in asthmatic and non-asthmatic children with rhinitis.Patients and MethodsWe performed a retrospective review of 400 pediatric patients, classified into an asthma group (n = 200) and a no-asthma group (n = 200). According to the BMI z-score all subjects were classified into normal-weight patients (NW; ?2 ≤ BMI z-score <1) and overweight patients/patients with obesity (OW/OB; BMI z-score ≥1). Lung function parameters were measured by spirometry. BMI and eFM were considered as adiposity indices.ResultsExcess weight/obesity was present in 37 % of patients. The OW/OB group showed higher basal forced expiratory vital capacity (FVC) and lower forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), FEV1/FVC ratio compared to the NW group (p ≤ 0.01). FVC and FEV1 were correlated with the BMI z-score, and FEV1/FVC with eFT (p ≤ 0.01). No differences were noted between the NW and the OW/OB groups in terms of respiratory parameters except for FVC (p < 0.01). In the OW/OB group, asthma patients were significantly different based on FEV1, FEV1/FVC, and forced expiratory flow at 25–75 % of FVC (FEF25/75) (p < 0.01). The BMI z-score was correlated with FVC and FEV1 in both the no-asthma and asthma groups (p ≤ 0.01 and p ≤ 0.05, respectively), while eFM was correlated with FEV1/FVC (p = 0.007) in the asthma group only.ConclusionObesity seems to have a significant impact on lung function in children with respiratory allergic diseases. BMI and eFM may be used to evaluate the impact of adiposity on lung function.  相似文献

BackgroundAlthough there is evidence that maternal prepregnancy obesity (body mass index [BMI; calculated as kg/m2] ≥30) results in elevated risk of obesity in the offspring later in life, maternal prepregnancy overweight (BMI 25 to 29.9) has not been clearly demonstrated as a risk factor for the future development of obesity in the offspring.ObjectiveOur objective was to determine if body composition differs between infants born to lean or overweight breastfeeding women.DesignBody composition (PeaPod, COSMED USA, Inc) and anthropometric outcomes were measured in 65 infants born to lean mothers (n=46) (BMI 18.5 to 24.9) or overweight mothers (n=19) (BMI 25 to 29.9) between 2006 and 2007. Maternal body composition (BodPod, COSMED USA, Inc) was also measured.ResultsBody fat mass was higher in infants born to overweight mothers compared with infants born to lean mothers at age 2 weeks and 3 months (11.9% vs 15.3% and 24.1% vs 26.8%, respectively; P<0.05). After adjusting for gestational weight gain and birth weight, body fat mass was significantly greater only at age 2 weeks.ConclusionsInfants of overweight mothers have greater body fat mass in the neonatal period compared with infants of lean mothers, suggesting that maternal overweight may predispose fetal metabolism to favor fat storage. Although our data suggest that this effect is short lived, future studies are needed to investigate children beyond the infancy period to test if body composition is greater in offspring of overweight women.  相似文献

ObjectiveWe compared body composition estimates using an eight-electrode, segmental, multiple-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (segmental MF-BIA) and dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in a group of healthy adults with a range of body mass indexes (BMIs).MethodsPercentage of body fat (%BF), fat-free mass, and fat mass assessed by DXA and segmental MF-BIA in 132 healthy adults were classified by normal (N; 18.5–24.9 kg/m2), overweight (OW; 25–29.9 kg/m2), and obese (OB; 30–39.9 kg/m2) BMI.ResultsCompared with DXA, segmental MF-BIA overestimated %BF in the OB BMI group (3.4%; P < 0.0001). MF-BIA overestimated %BF among men (0.75%; P < 0.006) and women (0.87%; P < 0.006) and underestimated it in the N BMI group (?1.56%; P < 0.0001); %BF was not different between methods in the OW BMI group. Error in %BF determined by segmental MF-BIA and DXA increased as %BF increased (r = 0.42, P < 0.0001). Waist circumference was the only significant predictor of systematic error in %BF between MF-BIA and DXA (r = 0.60, P < 0.0001).ConclusionEight-electrode, segmental MF-BIA is a valid method to estimate %BF in adults with BMI classified as N and OW, but not as OB. Estimation of trunk resistance with current segmental MF-BIA devices may explain the underestimation of %BF in the adults with OB BMI. Further examination of the effect of waist circumference and body fat distribution on the accuracy of BIA measurements is warranted.  相似文献

Research shows a positive relationship between dietary energy density (ED) and body mass index (BMI), but dietary ED of weight loss maintainers is unknown. This preliminary investigation was a secondary data analysis that compared self-reported dietary ED and food group servings consumed in overweight adults (OW: BMI=27-45kg/m(2)), normal weight adults (NW: BMI=19-24.9 kg/m(2)), and weight loss maintainers (WLM: current BMI=19-24.9kg/m(2) [lost≥10% of maximum body weight and maintained loss for ≥5years]) participating in 2 studies, with data collected from July 2006 to March 2007. Three 24-h phone dietary recalls from 287 participants (OW=97, NW=85, WLM=105) assessed self-reported dietary intake. ED (kcal/g) was calculated by three methods (food+all beverages except water [F+AB], food+caloric beverages [F+CB], and food only [FO]). Differences in self-reported consumption of dietary ED, food group servings, energy, grams of food/beverages, fat, and fiber were assessed using one-way MANCOVA, adjusting for age, sex, and weekly energy expenditure from self-reported physical activity. ED, calculated by all three methods, was significantly lower in WLM than in NW or OW (FO: WLM=1.39±0.45kcal/g; NW=1.60±0.43 kcal/g; OW=1.83±0.42 kcal/g). Self-reported daily servings of vegetables and whole grains consumed were significantly higher in WLM compared to NW and OW (vegetables: WLM=4.9±3.1 servings/day; NW=3.9±2.0 servings/day; OW=3.4±1.7 servings/day; whole grains: WLM=2.2±1.8 servings/day; NW=1.4±1.2 servings/day; OW=1.3±1.3 servings/day). WLM self-reported consuming significantly less energy from fat and more fiber than the other two groups. Self-reported energy intake per day was significantly lower in WLM than OW, and WLM self-reported consuming significantly more grams of food/beverages per day than OW. These preliminary findings suggest that consuming a diet lower in ED, characterized by greater intake of vegetables and whole grains, may aid with weight loss maintenance and should be further tested in prospective randomized controlled trials.  相似文献

  目的  探索孕前体质量指数、孕期增重与子代学龄前期肥胖和体成分的关系,为指导母亲从孕前开始合理控制体重和预防儿童肥胖提供依据。  方法  于2020年9—12月在天津市3所幼儿园招募1 333名学龄前儿童。结构化问卷收集儿童生活方式信息;检测儿童身高、体重、体脂肪组织质量,计算体脂肪百分比(FM%)、脂肪质量指数(FMI)、非脂肪质量指数(FFMI)。获取儿童母亲孕产期医疗记录,将母亲按孕前体重状态和孕期增重分组。采用χ2检验、t检验、线性回归模型及Logistic回归方法分析不同组间儿童肥胖及体成分差异。  结果  纳入研究的学龄前儿童超重及肥胖检出率为12.7%和7.7%。调整母亲分娩年龄及产次,儿童出生孕周、性别及年龄和生活方式后,母亲孕前BMI、孕期增重与子代学龄前期的肥胖及体成分指标的相关性均有统计学意义(P值均 < 0.05)。孕前正常体重母亲孕期增重过多会增加子代高FM%及高FMI的风险(OR值分别为1.81,1.68,P值均 < 0.05);孕前超重肥胖母亲,子代肥胖风险及体成分与母亲孕期增重相关性均无统计学意义。  结论  母亲孕前体重状态、孕期增重与子代学龄前期肥胖及体成分均存在关联。建议母亲孕前及孕产期合理控制体重。  相似文献

Exercise may sensitize individuals with overweight and obesity to appetitive signals (e.g., hunger and fullness cues), overriding trait eating behaviors that contribute to overeating and obesity, such as uncontrolled eating. The objective of the current study was to measure predictors of objective ad libitum energy intake at a laboratory-based, post-exercise test-meal in adolescents ranging in weight status from overweight to severe obesity. We hypothesized that appetitive states, rather than appetitive traits, would be the strongest predictors of energy intake at a post-exercise test-meal, after controlling for body size. At Baseline, 30 adolescents (ages 10–16 years, 50% female (F), 43% non-Hispanic white (NHW), 83% with obesity (OB)) completed state and trait appetite measures and an ad libitum dinner meal following intensive exercise. Nineteen of those participants (47% F, 32% NHW, 79% OB) completed identical assessments two years later (Year 2). Energy intake (kcal) at each time point was adjusted for fat-free mass index (i.e., body size). Adjusted energy intake was reliable from Baseline to Year 2 (ICC = 0.84). Multiple pre-meal appetite ratings were associated with test-meal energy intake. In stepwise linear regression models, pre-meal prospective food consumption was the strongest and only significant predictor of test-meal energy intake at both Baseline (R2 = 0.25, p = 0.005) and Year 2 (R2 = 0.41, p = 0.003). Baseline post-exercise energy intake was associated with weight change over two years (R2 = 0.24, p = 0.04), but not with change in fat mass (p = 0.11). Appetitive traits were not associated with weight or body composition change (p > 0.22). State appetite cues were the strongest predictors of post-exercise energy intake, independent of body size. Future studies should examine whether long-term exercise programs enhance responsiveness to homeostatic appetite signals in youth with overweight and obesity, with a goal to reduce excess energy intake and risk for weight gain over time.  相似文献

Purpose

To compare intakes of dietary iron and enhancers and inhibitors of iron absorption between overweight/obese (OW/OB) adolescents and their normal weight (NW) peers, and between parental education levels stratified by weight status.

Methods

This was a comparative cross-sectional study of adolescents (n 121 OW/OB and n 102 NW) aged 12–14 years, attending a secondary school in Nonthaburi province, Thailand. Socio-demographic data were obtained from participants’ parents using a questionnaire. Participants recorded their intakes for 3 non-consecutive days, using a prospective food record.

Results

Compared with NW adolescents, OW/OB adolescents consumed more total protein and animal protein after adjustment for energy intake (both p = 0.047). OW/OB adolescents whose mothers were less educated consumed more total iron and available iron after adjustment for energy intake, compared with their OW/OB peers whose mothers were more educated (p = 0.045 and p = 0.040). NW adolescents with more highly educated mothers had higher absolute and energy-adjusted fibre intakes (both p = 0.047). However, NW adolescents of mothers with a high–intermediate level of education consumed less calcium, after adjustment for energy intake (p = 0.028).

Conclusions

OW/OB adolescents with less educated mothers had higher energy-adjusted intakes of iron and available iron. Dietary differences in OW/OB adolescents relative to maternal education, and other socioeconomic indicators, should be explored in a nationally representative data set.

Identification of modifiable risk factors for obesity has proven crucial for its prevention, for example inadequate intrauterine growth. The current study verified the relationship between nutritional status at birth and overweight in youth. A total of 287 individuals were evaluated, with a mean age of 15.2 years (SD 1.4). Nutritional status at birth was based on the birth weight index, and current status was based on BMI, waist circumference, and body composition. In boys there was a positive association between weight index and overweight (p = 0.05) and excess abdominal fat (p = 0.04). For girls, there was a negative association between weight index and length at birth (p = 0.00) and amount of muscle mass (p = 0.01). Girls with lower weight index presented a higher amount of total body and abdominal fat, while those with higher weight index presented lower final height (p = 0.09). The results suggest that individuals with extreme weight indices are at risk for future obesity, especially at the upper extreme for males and the lower extreme for females.  相似文献
