The present study was undertaken to examine the validity of using the OMNI scale of perceived exertion to regulate intensity during extended exercise periods. Forty-eight subjects (24 male, 24 female) were recruited and each subject completed a maximal graded exercise test (GXT) and two 20-min submaximal exercises. During the GXT, ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) as well as oxygen uptake (V˙O2) and heart rate (HR) equivalent to 50 and 70% of maximum V˙O2 (V˙O2max) were estimated. During each submaximal exercise, subjects were instructed to produce and maintain a workload equivalent to the RPE estimated at 50 or 70% V˙O2max, and V˙O2 and HR were measured every 5 min throughout the exercise. Of the 48 subjects, 12 (6 male and 6 female) performed both the estimation and production trials on a treadmill (TM/TM), 12 (6 male and 6 female) performed both the estimation and production trials on a cycle ergometer (C/C), 12 (6 male and 6 female) performed the estimation trial on a treadmill and the production trial on a cycle ergometer (TM/C), and 12 (6 male and 6 female) performed the estimation trial on a cycle ergometer and the production trial on a treadmill (C/TM). No differences in V˙O2 between the estimation and any 5 min of the production trial were observed at either intensity in TM/TM and C/C. No differences in HR between the estimation and any 5 min of the production trial were also observed at 50% V˙O2max in TM/TM and at both 50 and 70% V˙O2max in C/C. However, HR was higher at 20th min of the production trial at 70% V˙O2max in TM/TM. Both the V˙O2 and HR were generally lower in TM/C and higher in C/TM. However, these differences diminished when values were normalized using V˙O2max of the same mode that other groups had attained. These data suggest that under both intra- and intermodal conditions, using the OMNI perceived exertion scale is effective not only in establishing the target intensity at the onset of exercise, but also in maintaining the intensity throughout a 20-min exercise session. Aim: Recent findings have challenged the belief that the cardiac output (CO) and oxygen consumption (VO2) relationship is linear from rest to maximal exercise. The purpose of this study was to determine the CO and stroke volume (SV) response to a range of exercise intensities, 40–100% of VO2max, during cycling. Methods: Ten well‐trained cyclists performed a series of discontinuous exercise bouts to determine the CO and SV vs. VO2 responses. Results: The rate of increase in CO, relative to VO2, during exercise from 40 to 70% of VO2max was 4.4 ± 1.4 L L?1. During exercise at 70–100% of VO2max, the rate of increase in CO was reduced to 2.1 ± 0.9 L L?1 (P = 0.01). Stroke volume during exercise at 80–100% of VO2max was reduced by 7% when compared to exercise at 50–70% of VO2max (134 ± 5 vs. 143 ± 5 mL per beat, P = 0.02). Whole body arterial‐venous O2 difference increased significantly as intensity increased. Conclusion: The observation that the rate of increase in CO is reduced as exercise intensity increases suggests that cardiovascular performance displays signs of compromised function before maximal VO2 is reached.  相似文献

It is well established that both short‐term (1–5 days) and long‐term (weeks to months) high intensity exercise (i.e. 70–75%VO2max) provides cardioprotection against ischaemia‐reperfusion injury. However, it is unclear if moderate intensity exercise will also provide cardioprotection. Aim: Therefore, these experiments compared the protective effects of moderate vs. high intensity exercise in providing defense against ischaemia‐reperfusion injury. Methods: Male Sprague–Dawley rats were randomly assigned to one of three‐experimental groups: (1) sedentary (control); (2) moderate intensity treadmill exercise (60 min day?1 at ~55%VO2max); or (3) high intensity treadmill exercise (60 min day?1 at ~75%VO2max). Hearts were exposed to 20 min of global ischaemia followed by 30 min reperfusion in an isolated working heart preparation. Results: Compared with sedentary rats, both moderate and high intensity exercised rats maintained a higher (P < 0.05) percentage of pre‐ischaemia cardiac output and cardiac work (cardiac output × systolic blood pressure) during reperfusion. No differences in the percent recovery of cardiac output and heart work existed (P > 0.05) between the two exercise groups. Conclusions: These data reveal that both moderate and high intensity exercise training provide equivalent protection against ischaemia‐reperfusion injury.  相似文献

Oral peroxidase, one of the most important salivary antioxidant enzymes, is subjected to alternation due to various body conditions. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of exercise intensity on salivary peroxidase activity. Using a randomized design, ten healthy male university students (mean age, 23.22; s x = 2.34 years) completed treadmill runs with initial velocity 6.73 km/h at the rate of 1.58 km/h increase every 3 min until exhaustion. Unstimulated whole saliva collected over a 5-min period in pre-weighed tubes before, immediately after exercise, and 1 h after exercise was analyzed for total protein and saliva peroxidase activity. The saliva flow rate ranged from 0.08 to 1.40 ml min−1 at rest and was not significantly affected by the exercise. Peroxidase activity in each sample was measured using 4-amino antipyrine as substrate. In the incremental exhaustion run and also at 75% VO2max, the secretion rates of peroxidase increased. No significant changes in saliva flow rate were observed in any treadmill run. Treadmill runs at 75% VO2max and to exhaustion increased the activity of peroxidase immediately after exercise which decreased after 1 h. It was concluded that short-duration, high-intensity exercise increases the activity rate of peroxidase despite no change in the saliva flow rate. These effects appear to be associated with changes in sympathetic activity and not the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis.  相似文献

Summary Two experiments were performed to examine salivary immunoglobulin A (s-IgA) responses to varying levels of exercise intensity and duration. For experiment 1, 9 college men (mean age, SD=23.56, 1.64 years) completed treadmill runs of 15, 30, and 45 min at approximately 60% of maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max). For experiment 2, 9 other college men (mean age, SD=23.67, 2.0 years) ran for 20 min at approximately 50, 65 and 80% of VO2max. Unstimulated salivary samples were collected before, and immediately, 1 and 2 h after the exercise. Samples were assayed for s-IgA using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Mean s-IgA levels did not change significantly (P>0.05) at any of the post-exercise collection times when compared to pre-exercise levels. The results of this investigation indicated that running at intensities of 50–80% of VO2max and for durations of 15–45 min did not affect s-IgA levels.  相似文献

To date, there has been little research examining how elevated ambient temperatures exert an additional effect on the acute immune response to endurance exercise. Seven endurance-trained, non-heat-acclimated men [mean (95% confidence interval): 29.7 (25.9–33.5) years, V˙O2max 66.3 (61.3–71.3) ml·kg−1·min−1] performed two 60-min treadmill runs (75% V˙O2max) in two different environments (EX1: 18°C/50% room temperature/relative humidity and EX2: 28°C/50% room temperature/relative humidity) with a 7-day interval between the runs. Blood samples were drawn at rest and 0, 0.5, 3, 24, and 48 h after exercise. Compared to EX1, exercise-induced increases in core temperature, sweating rate, heart rate, plasma norepinephrine, cortisol, human growth hormone, and neutrophil and monocyte counts were significantly (5% level) more pronounced after EX2. In contrast, responses of plasma epinephrine, myeloperoxidase, interleukin (IL)-6 as well as lymphocyte counts were similar in EX1 and EX2. Plasma concentrations of IL-8 and C-reactive protein were affected by neither exercise nor by additional heat exposure. Our results suggest that the additional impact of elevated ambient temperatures on stress responses to endurance exercise in trained subjects seems to affect primarily the cardiocirculatory and hormonal systems, and resulting changes in neutrophil and monocyte cell-trafficking. Summary Thirteen male subjects performed a running test on the treadmill consisting of four standard exercise intensities [65%, 75%, 85%, 95% maximal O2 uptake (VO2max)] presented in ascending, descending or random order. At the end of each exercise intensity, O2 consumption, heart rate (f c), venous blood lactate concentration ([la]b) and perceived exertion were assessed. This last variable was determined according to the Borg nonlinear CR-20 scale. The same variables were also determined during exercise at a standard intensity (65% or 95%VO2max) performed before and after a Finnish sauna bath. Ratings of perceived exertion showed a good test-retest reliability (r=0.77); they were the same when the exercise intensity was expressed in relative (%VO2max) or absolute (speed) terms, and were independent of the order of presentation of the exercise. The latter had no effect onf c either but it did, however, influence [la]b, which was significantly higher in the descending, as compared to the ascending or random modes of presentation. The sauna bath increasedf c at a given exercise intensity, but left perceived exertion and [la]b unchanged. It was concluded that at least under the present experimental conditions,f c and venous [la]b do not play a major role as determinants of perceived exertion.  相似文献

The aim here was to employ color tissue velocity imaging (TVI), to test the hypothesis that highly trained endurance athletes exhibit enhanced systolic function of the left ventricular (LV) myocardium both at rest and during combined arm-and-leg exercise in comparison with untrained subjects. For each of the ten elite male (EG) and ten matched control participants (CG), LV dimensions and systolic function were assessed at rest using echocardiography. Subsequently, these subjects exercised continuously on a combined arm-and-leg cycle ergometer for 3 min each at 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100% of VO2max. Oxygen uptake, heart rate, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and peak contraction systolic velocities of the LV myocardium (PSV) were recorded in the end of each level. At rest, the trained and untrained groups differed with respect to LV dimensions, but not systolic function. At 60–100% VO2max, the EG group demonstrated both higher PSV and SBP. The observation that the EG athletes had higher PSV than CG during exercise at 60–100% VO2max, but not at rest or at 50% of VO2max, suggested an enhanced systolic capacity. This improvement is likely to be due to an enhanced inotropic contractility, which only becomes apparent during exercise.  相似文献

Summary In six male subjects the sweating thresholds, heart rate (f c, as well as the metabolic responses to exercise of different intensities [40%, 60% and 80% maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max)], were compared at ambient temperatures (T a) of 5° C (LT) and 24° C (MT). Each period of exercise was preceded by a rest period at the same temperature. In LT experiments, the subjects rested until shivering occurred and in MT experiments the rest period was made to be of exactly equivalent length. Oxygen uptake (VO2) at the end of each rest period was higher in LT than MT (P< 0.05). During 20-min exercise at 40%VO2max performed in the cold no sweating was recorded, while at higher exercise intensities sweating occurred at similar rectal temperatures (T re) but at lower mean skin (T sk) and mean body temperatures (T b) in LT than MT experiments (P<0.001). The exercise inducedVO2 increase was greater only at the end of the light (40%VO2max) exercise in the cold in comparison with MT (P<0.001). Bothf c and blood lactate concentration [la]b were lower at the end of LT than MT for moderate (60%VO2max) and heavy (80%VO2max) exercises. It was concluded that the sweating threshold during exercise in the cold environment had shifted towards lower (T b) andT sk. It was also found that subjects exposed to cold possessed a potentially greater ability to exercise at moderate and high intensities than those at 24° C since the increases inT re,f c and [la]b were lower at the lowerT a.  相似文献

Gender differences in performance by elite endurance athletes, including runners, track cyclists and speed skaters, have been shown to be approximately 12%. The present study was designed to examine gender differences in physiological responses and kinematics associated with sprint cross-country skiing. Eight male and eight female elite sprint cross-country skiers, matched for performance, carried out a submaximal test, a test of maximal aerobic capacity (VO2max) and a shorter test of maximal treadmill speed (V max) during treadmill roller skiing utilizing the G3 skating technique. The men attained 17% higher speeds during both the VO2max and the V max tests (P < 0.05 in both cases), differences that were reduced to 9% upon normalization for fat-free body mass. Furthermore, the men exhibited 14 and 7% higher VO2max relative to total and fat-free body mass, respectively (P < 0.05 in both cases). The gross efficiency was similar for both gender groups. At the same absolute speed, men employed 11% longer cycles at lower rates, and at peak speed, 21% longer cycle lengths (P < 0.05 in all cases). The current study documents approximately 5% larger gender differences in performance and VO2max than those reported for comparable endurance sports. These differences reflect primarily the higher VO2max and lower percentage of body fat in men, since no gender differences in the ability to convert metabolic rate into work rate and speed were observed. With regards to kinematics, the gender difference in performance was explained by cycle length, not by cycle rate.  相似文献

Summary Limited information is available regarding the physiological responses to prolonged load carriage. This study determined the energy cost of prolonged treadmill walking (fixed distance of 12 km) at speeds of 1.10 m·s–1, 1.35 m·s–1, and 1.60 m·s–1, unloaded (clothing mass 5.2 kg) and with external loads of 31.5 and 49.4 kg. Fifteen male subjects performed nine trials in random order over a 6-week period. Oxygen uptake (VO2) was determined at the end of the first 10 min and every 20 min thereafter. A 10-min rest period was allowed following each 50 min of walking. No changes occurred in VO2 over time in the unloaded condition at any speed. The 31.5 and 49.4 kg loads, however, produced significant increases (ranging from 10 to 18%) at the two fastest and at all three speeds, respectively, even at initial exercise intensities less than 30% VO2max. In addition, the 49.4 kg load elicited a significantly higher (P<0.05) VO2 than did the 31.5 kg load at all speeds. The measured values of metabolic cost were also compared to those predicted using the formula of Pandolf et al. In trials where VO2 increased significantly over time, predicted values underestimated the actual metabolic cost during the final minute by 10–16%. It is concluded that energy cost during prolonged load carriage is not constant but increases significantly over time even at low relative exercise intensities. It is further concluded that applying the prediction model which estimates energy expenditure from short-term load carriage efforts to prolonged load carriage can result in significant underestimations of the actual energy cost.  相似文献

The objective is to study the effects of low-intensity (LI) or high-intensity (HI) equicaloric exercises on energy expenditure (EE) and substrate oxidation rate during and after the exercises in severely obese Caucasian adolescents. Twenty obese boys (BMI-SDS 3.04 ± 0.52, %Fat Mass 38.2 ± 2.1%) aged 14–16 years (pubertal stage >3) participated in this study. Maximal oxygen uptake (V′O2max) and maximal fat oxidation rate were determined with indirect calorimetry using a graded exercise test on a treadmill. EE and substrate oxidation rate during equicaloric low-intensity (LI, 42% V′O2max for 45 min) and high-intensity (HI, 67% V′O2max for 30 min) exercises on a treadmill and during post-exercise recovery period (60 min) were determined with indirect calorimetry. Maximal fat oxidation rate was observed at 42 ± 6% V′O2max (62 ± 5% HRmax) and fat oxidation rate was 0.45 ± 0.07 g/min. The total amounts of EE, during the LI and HI exercises, and the post-exercise recovery periods were not significantly different (1,884 ± 250 vs. 1,973 ± 201 kJ, p = 0.453), but the total amount of fat oxidised was significantly higher (+9.9 g, +55.7%, p < 0.001) during the LI exercise than during the HI exercise. However, fat oxidation rates during the post-exercise recovery periods were not significantly different following LI and HI exercises. Total fat oxidised was significantly higher during the LI than during the HI exercise in obese adolescents. However, the equicaloric exercise intensity did not influence EE, fat and carbohydrate oxidation rate during the recovery period.  相似文献

Summary The present study sought to evaluate the inconsistencies previously observed regarding the predominance of continuous or interval training for improving fitness. The experimental design initially equated and subsequently maintained the same relative exercise intensity by both groups throughout the program. Twelve subjects were equally divided into continuous (CT, exercise at 50% maximal work) or interval (IT, 30 s work, 30 s rest at 100% maximal work) training groups that cycled 30 min day–1, 3 days week–1, for 8 weeks. Following training, aerobic power (VO2max), exercising work rates, and peak power output were all higher (9–16%) after IT than after CT (5–7%). Vastus lateralis muscle citrate synthase activity increased 25% after CT but not after IT. A consistent increase in adenylate kinase activity (25%) was observed only after IT. During continuous cycling testing the CT group had reduced blood lactate (1ab) levels and respiratory quotient at both the same absolute and relative (70% VO2max) work rates after training, while the IT group displayed similar changes only at the same absolute work rates. By contrast, both groups responded similarly during intermittent cycling testing with lower 1ab concentrations seen only at absolute work rates. These results show that, of the two types of training programs currently employed, IT produces higher increases in VO2max and in maximal exercise capacity. Nevertheless, CT is more effective at increasing muscle oxidative capacity and delaying the accumulation of 1ab during continuous exercise.  相似文献

Persons with Down syndrome (DS) have diminished submaximal and peak work capacity. This study evaluated the dynamic response of oxygen uptake at onset and recovery (VO2 kinetics) of constant-load exercise (moderate intensity 45% VO2peak) in adults with DS. A total of 27 healthy participants aged 18–50 years performed graded treadmill exercise to assess peak VO2: 14 with DS (9 males and 5 females) and 13 controls without disabilities (9 males and 4 females). Subjects also performed constant-load exercise tests at 45% VO2peak to determine VO2 on-transient and VO2 off-transient responses. Peak VO2 was lower in participants with DS as compared to controls (DS 30.2 ± 7.1; controls 46.1 ± 9.6 mL kg−1 min−1, P < 0.05). In contrast, at 45% VO2peak, the time constants for the VO2 on-transients (DS 34.6 ± 9.1; controls 37.6 ± 9.0 s) and VO2 off-transients (DS 36.5 ± 12.3; controls 37.7 ± 7.0 s) were not significantly different between the groups. Additionally, there were no differences between on-transient and off-transient time constants in participants with DS or controls. These data demonstrate that the VO2 kinetics at onset and recovery of moderate intensity exercise is similar between adults with DS and controls. Therefore, the submaximal exercise performance of these individuals is not affected by slowed VO2 kinetics.  相似文献

This study examined the testosterone responses of men to an exercise bout simulating a competitive sporting effort in order to determine if the wearing of red-colored apparel influenced the hormonal response. Male subjects (n=10) were placed into sets of matched-pairs and performed VO2max cycle ergometry exercise test to exhaustion to simulate the competitive effort. Each member of a pairing was randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups—the wearing of red-colored clothing, or the wearing of black-colored clothing. Blood samples were collected before exercise (REST), an immediate postexercise sample was collected at exhaustion (EXH), and a final sample was taken at 15 min into recovery (REC) from exercise. Blood was biochemically analyzed for total testosterone. In response to the exercise, performance characteristics (i.e., VO2max and maximal workload) of treatment groups did not differ significantly. A significant increase (P<0.01) in the testosterone was observed in both treatment groups postexercise at EXH and at REC as compared to REST. However, no differences were observed between treatment groups in the before or postexercise hormonal concentrations. These findings suggest that the wearing of red-colored apparel had no affects on the testosterone responses to an exercise bout simulating a competition.  相似文献

 Thirteen standard-bred horses were trained intensively for 34 weeks and detrained for 6 weeks to study skeletal muscle adaptations to prolonged training, overtraining and detraining. Training included endurance (phase 1, 7 weeks), high-intensity (phase 2, 9 weeks) and overload training (OLT) (phase 3, 18 weeks). During phase 3, horses were divided into two groups, OLT and control (C), with OLT horses performing greater intensities and durations of exercise than C horses. Overtraining was evident in OLT horses after week 31 and was defined as a significant reduction in treadmill run time in response to a standardised exercise test (P<0.05). Relationships between peripheral (skeletal muscle) and whole body (maximum O2 uptake, V.O2, max, treadmill run time) adaptations to training were determined. Prolonged training resulted in significant adaptations in morphological characteristics of skeletal muscle but the adaptations were limited and largely completed by 16 weeks of training. Fibre area increased in all fibres while the number of capillaries per fibre increased and the diffusional index (area per capillary) decreased. Mitochondrial volume density continued to increase throughout 34 weeks of training and paralleled increases in V.O2,max and treadmill run time. Significant correlations were noted between mitochondrial volume and V.O2,max (R=0.71), run time and V.O2,max (R=0.83) and mitochondrial volume and run time (R=0.57). We conclude that many of adaptive responses of muscle fibre area and capillarity occur in the initial training period but that markers of oxidative capacity of muscle indicate progressive increases in aerobic capacity with increases in training load. The lack of differences between C and OLT groups indicated that there may be an upper limit to the ability of training stimulus to evoke skeletal muscle adaptive responses. Summary Maximal exercise responses were measured before and after 10 weeks of training in two groups of men, one trained on a treadmill (n =12) and the other on a step ergometer (n=9); the groups were pre- and post-tested on both machines to examine the specificity of the training modes. Training for both groups consisted of 3 days week–1, 30 min day–1, progressing to 50 min day–1, at an intensity of 75%–80% heart rate maximum reserve. Pre-training maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) was significantly higher on the treadmill for both groups (X=8.5%). VO2max increased 6.9% on the treadmill (P<0.05) and 6.9% (P>0.05) on the step ergometer after treadmill training. The small increases may be attributed to the specificity of the testing protocols used to elicit VO2max. Significant (P<0.01) increases in VO2max were found for both modalities after step-ergometry training (treadmill= 11.8%; step ergometer=23.2%). These increases resulted in equal post-test VO2max values (4.05 l min–1; 51 ml kg–1 min-) on the step ergometer and treadmill. The significant increases in VO2max found for both modalities after step-ergometry training shows that (1) step ergometry is an effective training modality, and (2) its effects can be measured on the treadmill and therefore it is not task-specific training.  相似文献

Our objective was to determine the effects of long-lasting endurance events on the energy cost of running (C r), and the role of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), its fractional utilisation (F) and C r in determining the performance. Ten healthy runners (age range 26–59 years) participated in an ultra-endurance competition consisting of three running laps of 22, 48 and 20 km on three consecutive days in the North–East of Italy. Anthropometric characteristics and VO2max by a graded exercise test on a treadmill were determined 5 days before and 5 days after the competition. In addition, C r was determined on a treadmill before and after each running lap. Heart rate (HR) was recorded throughout the three laps. Results revealed that mean C r of the individual laps did not increase significantly with lap number (P = 0.200), thus ruling out any chronic lap effect. Even so, however, at the end of lap 3, C r was 18.0% (P < 0.001) greater than before lap 1. In addition, a statistically significant acute lap effect on C r was observed at the end of the second and third laps (by 11.4 and 7.2%, respectively). The main factors determining performance were VO2max, F, as estimated from the average HR, and the average C r-mean throughout the three laps; the grand average speed over the three laps being described by v end-mean = F × VO2max × C r-mean−1. We concluded that (1) the substantial increase of C r-mean during the competition yields to marked worsening of the performance, and (2) the three variables F, VO2max and C r-mean combined as described above explaining 87% of the total competition time variance.  相似文献

Summary The purpose of this study was to determine how individuals adapt to a combination of strength and endurance training as compared to the adaptations produced by either strength or endurance training separately. There were three exercise groups: a strength group (S) that exercised 30–40 min·day–1, 5 days·week–1, an endurance group (E) that exercised 40 min·day–1, 6 days·week–1; and an S and E group that performed the same daily exercise regimens as the S and E groups. After 10 weeks of training, VO2 max increased approx. 25% when measured during bicycle exercise and 20% when measured during treadmill exercise in both E, and S and E groups. No increase in VO2 max was observed in the S group. There was a consistent rate of development of leg-strength by the S group throughout the training, whereas the E group did not show any appreciable gains in strength. The rate of strength improvement by the S and E group was similar to the S group for the first 7 weeks of training, but subsequently leveled off and declined during the 9th and 10th weeks. These findings demonstrate that simultaneously training for S and E will result in a reduced capacity to develop strength, but will not affect the magnitude of increase in VO2 max.This research was supported by a University of Illinois at Chicago Circle Research Board Grant and by a NIH Biomedical Research Support Grant (HEW RR07158-2) to the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle  相似文献
