Chlorophenols are transformedin vitro to polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/ Fs) by peroxidase-catalyzed oxidations. This is demonstrated with bovine lactoperoxidase as well as horseradish peroxidase, and with 3,4,5- and 2,4,5-trichlorophenol (TrCP). The yield of total PCDD/Fs with lactoperoxidase was 11 g per g 345-TrCP and 10 g per g 245-TrCP, of which 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDD/Fs constituted 8.5 and 2.2 g/g, respectively, corresponding to 0.85 and 1.2 g/g of Nordic TCDD-equivalents.  相似文献

Personal ads are a potentially rich source of information on relationships, particularly mating strategies. Most research on personal ads has been limited to content analyses of naturally occurring ads. In this study, four female seeking male ads were placed on two large Internet bulletin boards specializing in such ads. The four ads, differing primarily in a few key words representing the manipulated independent variable, garnered over 500 e-mail responses in 6 weeks. Contrary to prior research and to our prediction, the most popular ad was one in which the woman described herself as financially independent...; successful [and] ambitious, producing over 50% more responses than the next most popular ad, one in which the woman described herself as lovely...; very attractive and slim. A content analysis of responses to the ads revealed that information provided varied as a function of the ad they were answering.  相似文献

Two hundred and forty-six surface and buried sediment samples from Newark Bay, New Jersey, and its major tributaries (Passaic River, Hackensack River, Newark Bay, Arthur Kill, Elizabeth River, and Kill Van Kull) were assayed for p,p-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (p,p-DDT), p,p-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (p,p-DDD), and p,p-dichlorodiphenylchloroethylene (p,p-DDE) between February 1990 and March 1993. Chronological profiles in sediments from pre-1940 to the present were determined by radioisotope activities of 210Pb and 137Cs. The concentrations of these chemicals were compared to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) benchmark sediment values (Long and Morgan 1991). The objectives were to (a) determine the spatial and temporal distributions of DDT compounds in sediments, (b) identify possible sources, and (c) assess the potential for sediment toxicity within the estuary. Mean concentrations in surface sediments in individual waterways ranged from 5 to 473 g/kg for p,p-DDT, 18 to 429 g/kg for p,p-DDD, and 5 to 111 g/kg for p,p-DDE. A regional background mean concentration of approximately 100–300 g/kg p,p-DDT (sum of p,p-DDT, p,p-DDD, and p,p-DDE) was measured in surface sediments throughout the estuary, with the exception of the Arthur Kill, where mean concentrations exceeded 700 g/kg. The elevated concentrations found in recently deposited surface sediments in the Arthur Kill may be due to the presence of ongoing sources. The highest concentrations in buried sediments occurred in the lower Passaic River at depths corresponding to historical deposits from 1940 to 1970, the peak time period for production and usage of DDT in the United States. Comparisons to NOAA benchmark sediment toxicity values indicate that p,p-DDT, p,p-DDD, and p,p-DDE concentrations in surface sediments may pose a potential hazard to fish, shellfish, and other benthic and demersal organisms in some portions of the estuary, particularly in the upper and lower Arthur Kill.  相似文献

Flow-through early-life-stage (ELS) toxicity tests were conducted with the pesticides aldicarb (Temik®) and fonofos (Dyfonate®) to determine their effect on the survival and growth of fathead minnows. Concentrations of 78g/L of aldicarb and 16g/L of fonofos did not affect survival and growth. However, 156g/L of aldicarb and 33g/L of fonofos were lethal to larval-juvenile exposed for 30 days post-hatch. The maximum acceptable toxicant concentration (MATC) of aldicarb and fonofos for the fathead minnow is estimated to be between 78–156g/L and 16–33g/L, respectively. The corresponding chronic values (geometric mean of MATC values) would be 110g/L and 23g/L. Acute toxicity tests gave 96-hr LC50 values of 1370g aldicarb/L and 1090g fonofos/L. The acute-chronic ratio (96-hr LC50/chronic value) is 12 for aldicarb and 47 for fonofos.  相似文献

Much of child care in volves quick reactions based on one's automatic pilot derived from how we were parented. This paper is about two seemingly universal automatic pilot systems—the hard hats and the soft hearts. Hard hats are behavior management and modification oriented, while soft hearts are psychodynamically and counselling oriented. Typically, the hard hats tend to have the upper hand due to the nature of our culture, and they therefore have the effect of preventing the contributions of the soft hearts from being realized. That all too frequently sets up a dominant culture and a resentful minority situation. In acute tests of toxicity, two cladocerans,Daphnia galeata mendotae andCeriodaphnia lacustris, and the calanoid,Diaptomus oregonensis, were more sensitive to fenvalerate thanDaphnia magna, the organism used in standard laboratory bioassays. The 48-hr EC50s for each species/stage in order of increasing sensitivity were adultD. magna — 2.52 g/L;D. magna (48-hr old) — 0.83 g/L; adultD. galeata mendotae — 0.29 g/L; adultC. lacustris — 0.21 g/L;D. galeata mendotae (48-hr old) — 0.16 g/L; adultDiaptomus oregonensis — –0.12 g/L. No toxicity was observed when these organisms were exposed to a range of concentrations of the emulsifiable concentrate without fenvalerate (the EC blank).Rates of filtration of the14C-labelled alga,Chlamydomonas reinhardii byD. galeata mendotae, C. lacustris andD. oregonensis were decreased significantly at sublethal concentrations of fenvalerate after only 24-hr exposure.Ceriodaphnia lacustris showed the greatest sensitivity with rates of filtration significantly decreased at 0.01 g fenvalerate/ L. Concentrations of fenvalerate 0.05 g/L resulted in decreased rates of filtration byD. galeata mendotae. A concentration of 0.10 g fenvalerate/ L caused rates of filtration to increase inD. oregonensis. whereas 0.05 and 0.5 g/L resulted in a decrease in these rates.Rates of assimilation of algae byD. galeata mendotae, C. lacustris andD. oregonensis exposed to similar concentrations of fenvalerate were decreased at concentrations 0.05 g fenvalerate/L. Changes in rates of assimilation were not as sensitive a parameter of toxicity as changes in rates of filtration. The EC blank had no significant effects on rates of filtration or assimilation for all three species.  相似文献

The addition of 100 (g/L of Aroclor® 1242 (A1242) or 2,5,2,5-tetrachlorobiphenyl (TeCB) during 10 week chronic toxicity tests withHyalella azteca resulted in complete mortality. There were no effects on survival, growth, or reproduction after addition of 30 g/L. Toxic effects were observed at tissue levels of between 30 and 180 g/g on a wet weight basis, and tissue levels appear to be a better indicator of toxicity than levels in water. No toxic effects were observed after additions of up to 2,700 g/L of the coplanar congener 3,4,3,4-TeCB.H. azteca has the ability to avoid accumulating in excess of 140 g/g 3,4,3,4-TeCB. The amount taken up was proportional to the amount added in water up to 100 g/L, but was constant at higher additions, possibly accounting for its relatively low toxicity. The low toxicity of the coplanar congener, as compared to the non-coplanar 2,5,2,5-TeCB, is in direct contrast to the high toxicity of coplanar PCB congeners to mammals and may be associated with slower rates of aromatic hydrocarbon metabolism in amphipods. Polychlorinated biphenyl levels measured in amphipods from Lake Ontario are approximately 100-fold below levels associated with toxicity inH. azteca, but are above levels which, through biomagnification up the food chain, lead to salmonid residues in excess of 2 g/g, a tolerance limit for human consumption.  相似文献

Acute and chronic toxicity studies of Kepone® (chlordecone) and mirex were conducted with daphnids (Daphnia magna), amphipods (Gammarus pseudolimnaeus), and larvae of a midge (Chironomus plumosus). Acute toxicities of Kepone ranged from a 48-hr EC50 of 350g/L for midges to a 96-hr LC50 of 180g/L for amphipods, whereas the acute toxicities of mirex to all three taxa exceeded 1000g/L. Maximum acceptable toxicant concentrations (MATC's) for Kepone and mirex were estimated by measuring reproduction of daphnids, growth of amphipods, emergence of midges, and survival of all organisms. MATC for Kepone was estimated to be between 9 and 18g/L for daphnids, between 1 and 2g/L for amphipods, and between 8.4 and 18g/L for midges; MATC for mirex exceeded 34g/L for daphnids and midges, but less than 2.4g/L for amphipods. The concentration of Kepone and mirex accumulated by daphnids was 760 and 8025 times, respectively, the concentration in water. Estimated times for elimination of 50% of the residues by daphnids were 141 hr for Kepone and 12 hr for mirex.  相似文献

Long-term investigations of polychlorinated hydrocarbon levels in mothers' milk were made from 1969 to 1976. The levels ofp,p-DDE, p,p DDT, dieldrin and PCB in mothers' milk were within the range reported by others. However, -BHC(Hexachlorocyclohexane) levels in the milk were 10 times that found in non-Japanese. A gradual decrease in the -BHC level in the milk was observed during this period. In contrast, the levelsof p,p-DDE,p,p-DDT, dieldrin and PCB were consistent for the 7-year period. A significant correlation between the levels of PCB andp,p-DDE in mothers' milk and blood was observed in the 1974–1976 samples. However, after prohibition of the use of chlorinated hydrocarbons, this relationship was less apparent in the 1972–1973 samples.  相似文献

Microencapsulated permethrin (penncapthrin) was evaluated under laboratory conditions for its toxicity toward several nontarget aquatic invertebrates. Average LC50 estimates for selected lotic invertebrates, based on a one hour dosing regime, were: 2.71 mg/L forSimulium vittatum, 4.59 mg/L forHydropsyche spp., and 13.41 mg/L forIsonychia bicolor. In acute static tests withDaphnia magna, there was no significant difference (p0.05) between the toxicity of penncapthrin at 96 h (LC50 range: 6.80–22.5 g/L) and the EC formulation at 72 h (LC50 range: 0.6–21 g/L). Comparatively, the toxicity of microencapsulated methyl parathion (penncap-m) was not significantly different from that of penncapthrin towardD. magna, the former having LC50 estimates ranging form 0.3–12.25 g/L. LC50 estimates associated withDaphnia pulex ranged from 19 to 131 g/L. The toxicity of penncapthrin and penncap-m towardD. pulex was difficult to determine because of frequent control mortality due to food deprivation resulting from the need to run tests for longer than 48 h. In successful tests, LC50 estimates ranged from 19 to 28 g/L for penncapthrin and 0.08 to 25 g/L for penncap-m after 72 h exposure. In long term toxicity tests, 95% of D. magna at 1 g/L, 44% at 10 g/L, and 20% at 15 g/L survived after 39 days exposure. Less than 15% ofD. pulex survived over the same concentration range following 32 days exposure. Despite some drawbacks, long-term toxicity tests were more appropriate than short-term tests for evaluating microencapsulated sticides because of reduced variability in LC50 estimates and lower control mortality.  相似文献

Polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), DDT (p,p-DDT,p,p-DDD, andp,p-DDE and HCH isomers (hexachlorocyclohexanes including , , and isomers) were determined in a marine food chain, including seawater, zooplankton, myctophid, squid and striped dolphin collected from the western North Pacific waters. The concentrations of these pollutants increased in higher trophic levels, where the highest bioconcentration factors (concentration ratio in organisms to water), as much as 107, were obtained from both PCBs and DDT in striped dolphin. The proportions of highly chlorinated biphenyls,p,p-DDE and -HCH increased in higher-ranking predators. These observations suggest that the bioaccumulation mechanisms in lower trophic levels depend primarily on the physicochemical properties of pollutants, whereas those in higher trophic levels are affected by the biodegradability of the pollutants and the metabolic capacity and life-span of the organisms.  相似文献

Summary In a lindane (-hexachlorocyclohexane =-benzenehexachloride)-producing factory 57 workers were studied with regard to their blood levels of the three hexachlorocyclohexane isomers:-, -, and-HCH. The TLV-TWA (MAK value 1979) for-HCH of 0.5 mg/m3 was not exceeded at any of the workplaces where HCH is synthesized and purified to lindane. Additionally, in some of the workers samples of s.c. adipose tissue were taken for determination of HCH-isomer content. An external group of 20 clerks was examined in the same way for control purposes.In contrast to the control persons, none of whom had HCH-concentrations in serum above the respective detection limits, the values determined in serum of the exposed workers were in the following ranges:-HCH: 10–273 g/l,-HCH: 17–760 g/l, and-HCH: 5-188 g/l. Of special interest is the observation of a significant increase of-HCH-concentration in serum with the time of employment in lindane production, indicating a pronounced accumulation of this substance in the human organism. Concentrations of this isomer in s.c. adipose tissues were about 300-fold higher than in serum. A significant correlation between both parameters could be established.The results of this study show that adherence to the TLV-TWA of-HCH is not sufficient for control of HCH-exposure. Furthermore, biological monitoring of exposed workers is necessary taking into account the three more important isomers-, -, and-HCH.  相似文献

Summary A cross-sectional study was performed in order to investigate the influence of chronic lead-exposure on the peripheral nervous system. We examined 148 male workers of a storage battery manufacturing plant, who had been exposed to lead metal and inorganic lead compounds for 1 to 28 years (mean 11 years). Fifteen workers with non-occupational risks of peripheral neuropathy (former diseases, alcohol abuse, medication) were excluded from the study. The investigation program comprised: case history, physical examination, analyses of blood- and urine-samples and determination of maximal motor, mixed and sensory conduction velocity (NCV) of the ulnar and median nerve of the right forearm. Objectively no worker showed any signs of health effects related to lead exposure. The Biological Monitoring included the determination of (1) Blood-lead level (Pb-B), (2) Free erythrocyte porphyrins (FEP), (3) -Aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALA-D) and (4) -Aminolevulinic acid in urine (ALA-U). Further time-weighted-average (TWA)-values of Pb-B were calculated on the basis of several determinations over the period 1975–1981. The following actual (TWA) median values resulted: Pb-B 53 g/dl (54 g/dl), ALA-U 5.6 mg/l (8.4 mg/l), FEP 2.0 mg/l (2.0 mg/l). The Biologischer Arbeitsstoff Toleranz Wert (BAT) of 70 g//dl for Pb-B was exceeded in 15 workers (11%), and of 15 mg/l for ALA-U in 30 cases (23%). In comparison with age-matched controls, the lead workers showed a mild slowing of NCV with mean values between 0.8 and 2.0 m/s. Multiple stepwise regression analyses revealed statistically significant correlations between the four NCV and age as well as Pb-B. There were better correlations by using TWA than actual data of Pb-B. Consideration of the results of the regression analyses, together with an evaluation of the individual neurophysiological status as a function of internal lead exposure, a dose-effect-relationship was found only in the case of Pb-B exceeding 70 g/dl. From our study it is concluded that chronic lead exposure resulting in blood-lead levels of below 70 g/dl is no occupational risk causing a functionally significant slowing of nerve conduction velocities.With Grants from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Bonn (Project no. Nitrous oxide (N2O) was assayed in 676 urine samples and 101 blood samples provided after exposure by operating theatre personnel from nine hospitals. The blood and urine assays were repeated in 25 subjects 18 h after the end of exposure. For 80 subjects, environmental N2O was also measured during intraoperative exposure. Mean urinary N2O in the 676 subjects at the end of exposure was 40 g/l (range 1–3805 g/l); in 10 of the 676 subjects, urinary N2O was in the range 279–3805 g/l (mean 1202 /l). The 98th percentile was 120 g/l. Mean blood N2O at the end of exposure, measured in 101 subjects, was 21 g/l (median 16 g/l, range 1–75 g/l). Blood and urine N2O (1.5 g/l and 4.9 g/l, respectively) in 25 subjects, 18 h after exposure, was significantly higher than in occupationally non-exposed subjects (blood 0.91 g/l, urine 1 g/l). Environmental exposure was significantly related to blood and urinary N2O (r = 0.59 andr = 0.64, respectively). Blood and urinary N2O were significantly related to each other (r = 0.71), and were equivalent to about 25% of the environmental exposure level. The mean urinary N2O of 1202 g/l in 10/676 subjects was not related to environmental exposure in the operating theatre. The highest urinary N2O levels measured in these 10/676 subjects could be explained by an asymptomatic urinary infection.  相似文献

Fathead minnows, 30 days old, were exposed to technical grade bromacil and diuron in flow-through tests to determine acute toxicity. LC50 values for bromacil were 185, 183, 182 and 167 mg/L at 24, 48, 96, and 168 hr, respectively; and for diuron, 23.3, 19.9, 14.2, and 7.7 mg/L at 24, 48, 96, and 192 hr, respectively. Eggs, newly hatched fry, and juvenile fish were continuously exposed to lower concentrations of the herbicides for 64 days. Growth was significantly reduced (p 0.01) at the lowest bromacil exposure of 1.0 mg/L. Therefore, it was not possible to determine a no effect concentration. The no effect concentration for diuron was 33.4 g/L, while the lowest concentration which resulted in adverse effects was 78.0 g/L. Adverse effects at 78.0 g/L were an increased incidence of abnormal or dead fry immediately after hatch (p 0.01) and decreased survival throughout the exposure period (p 0.05). Neither herbicide accumulated significantly in fish tissue, as bioconcentration factors were <3.2 and 2.0 for bromacil and diuron, respectively. Rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) injected with radiolabeled bromacil or diuron eliminated over 90% of the radioactivity within 24 hr. Parent compound and metabolites were detected in the aquarium water in both cases. Metabolites of diuron recovered from the water included 3,4-dichloroaniline and several demethylated products.  相似文献

Summary Fifty-three persons occupied in a municipal waste incinerator were examined with respect to their internal exposure to organic substances which may be produced during pyrolysis of organic matter. For this purpose the levels of benzene in blood, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in plasma, and mono- (MCPs), di- (DCPs), tri- (TCPs), tetra-(TECPs) and pentachlorophenol (PCP) and hydroxypyrene in urine were determined. For control purposes, 431 men and women were examined. Significantly higher values for the workers were found for the excretion of hydroxypyrene [median (m): 0.24vs 0.11 g/l; non-smokers], 2,4/2,5-DCP (m: 10.5 vs 3.9 g/l) and 2,4,5-TCP (m: 1.2 vs 0.8 g/l) and for the HCB level in plasma (m: 4.4 vs 2.8 g/l). For the concentrations of 4-MCP and 2,3,4,6/2,3,5,6-TECP, the controls had significantly higher concentrations in urine than did the workers in the incineration plant (m: 4-MCP 1.7 vs 1.2; 2,3,4,6/2,3,5,6-TECP: 1.2 vs 0.3 g/l). No significant differences between workers and controls were detected with respect to benzene in blood (m: 0.20 vs 0.28 g/l; non-smokers), 2,4,6-TCP and PCPs in urine (m: 0.85 vs 0.60 and 2.2 vs 2.2 g/l) or the levels of PCB congeners in plasma (m: 138, 153, 180: 5.6 vs 4.1 g/l). The elevated levels of hydroxypyrene, 2,4/2,5-DCP, 2,4,5-TCP and HCB in biological material may be related to the incineration of the waste. These elevations, however, are very small and are of interest more from the environmental than from the occupational point of view.  相似文献

Objectives: External and internal exposure to naphthalene was examined in the most important industries that are typically concerned with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-induced diseases (cancer). Furthermore, a control collective from the general population was investigated. Methods: External naphthalene was determined by personal air sampling (n=205). The internal exposure was examined by urinary metabolites 1-naphthol and 2-naphthol (n=277). Results: Highest median concentrations of naphthalene in air were found in converter infeed (93.2 g/m3) and coal-tar distillation (35.8 g/m3). Moderate and low levels were determined in coking plants (14.5 g/m3) and in the production of refractories (6.1 g/m3) and graphite electrodes (0.7 g/m3). Biological monitoring revealed concentrations of the sum of both metabolites [(1+2)-NOL] in smokers to be increased by 1.6–6.4 times compared with that in non-smokers at the same workplaces. Among non-smokers we found high median (1+2)-NOL levels in converter bricklayers (120.1 g/l), in coal-tar distillation workers (56.0 g/l) and in coking plant workers (29.5 g/l). (1+2)-NOL concentrations around 10 g/l were found in the production of refractories and graphite electrodes. There was a rough coherency between external and internal naphthalene exposure. In the controls, median (1+2)-NOL concentrations were 10.9 g/l in non-smokers urine and 40.3 g/l in smokers urine samples. Conclusions: Actual conditions of occupational hygiene at the workplaces investigated in this comprehensive study are better than those that current limit values of 50,000 g/m3 (TLV, TRK) seem to induce. It has become obvious that tobacco smoking is a crucial confounding factor in biological monitoring of naphthalene-exposed humans, making interpretation of occupationally increased naphthol excretions very difficult at low exposure levels.  相似文献

We try to identify determinants of illness reporting, provider choice and resulting expenditure with different econometric models using data from a representative household panel survey of 800 households in Nouna health district, Burkina Faso, during 2000–2001. The factors being an adult, married, illness occurred in rainy season and severe illness significantly increased the magnitude of health expenditure. Compared to malaria, individuals spent more on other infectious diseases, injury and the other disease category. In contrast, people were less likely to spend on chronic illness. An individual who belonged to a household headed by a female, a literate household head and with a higher household expenditure had a significantly positive association with the magnitude of expenditure. Findings from this study can be used for policy implication to improve health system performance in Burkina Faso through enhancing health care utilization.  相似文献

Conversion of bottomland hardwood forests agricultural land has reduced habitat and water quality in many lakes in the floodplain of the lower Mississippi River. The objectives of this study were to ascertain current contaminant residue concentrations in fish and sediment from lakes in the Atchafalaya River Basin and to determine the influence of overflow and agricultural land use on contaminant levels. Fish and sediment samples were collected from eight lakes that differed in overflow (no overflow, headwater overflow, backwater overflow) and land-use characteristics (presence or absence of agricultural land). Residue analysis of 24 sediment and 82 fish samples collected from the study lakes showed that contaminant residues were uniformly low. Total DDT concentrations, consisting mainly of DDE, were found in 98% of the fish samples and generally were the highest residues though they rarely exceeded 0.50 g/g. Dieldrin, -BHC and -BHC, in concentrations rarely exceeding 0.05 g/g, were detected in about 50% of the fish samples. Total organochlorine pesticide and PCB residues were less than 2.00 g/g in all fish from all lakes, except for a 3.46 g/g total in spotted gar (Lepisosteus oculatus) from one lake. Sediments were free from pesticide residues except for occasional traces (0.01 g/g) of -BHC. Metal residue concentrations in fish and sediment samples were typical of uncontaminated areas. Lake systems in the Atchafalaya River Basin appeared to be relatively uncontaminated by agricultural pesticides, but metal and organic residues in fish were similar from lakes with the same land-use and overflow characteristics.  相似文献

Egg yolk was spiked withp,p-dicofol (p,p-DCF) (0.1–2.0 g/gm),p,p-dichlorobenzophenone (p,p-DCBP) (0.1–2.0 (g/gm), and 1,1-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-2,2-dichloroethylene (p,p- DDE) (0.05–1.0 g/gm). The fortified egg yolk (2–5 g) was mixed with acetonitrile to extract non-fat organic materials. After removal of acetonitrile, the spiked chemicals were separated with a column chromatograph packed with acid alumina. Recovery efficiencies forp,p-DCBP andp,p-DDE were determined by gas chromatography, and forp,p-dicofol by high performance liquid chromatography. The recovery efficiencies forp,p-dicofol,p,p-DCBP andp,p-DDE were 77.2–93.8%, 84.1–101.1%, and 88.5–96.0%, respectively.  相似文献
