Health education professional preparation programs were surveyed to determine the extent of HIV/AIDS education health educators are receiving. The survey also addressed content areas, skills being developed or enhanced, areas of deficiency in preparation programs, and areas in which national professional associations may assist in the preparation of AIDS educators. One hundred eight-three surveys were mailed; 114 (68%) were completed and returned. Twenty-one institutions reported planning a separate course on HIV/AIDS. Most were designing general service courses to reach a broad cross-section of students. Twenty-five institutions (23.8%) reported previously offering or currently offering a specific course on AIDS. One hundred two (89.5%) respondents reported HIV/AIDS warranted the attention and funding it had received. Thirty-seven (35.2%) respondents reported AIDS education was of sufficient importance to influence hiring of faculty members in their departments. Survey findings demonstrate that current AIDS education courses targeted to the general student population may not be adequate in meeting the professional preparation needs of health educators charged to provide AIDS education.  相似文献

Although patient education has always been recognized as an essential function of a hospital, it was not until the health concerns of the nation focused on prevention that hospitals began to develop activities aimed at primarily healthy individuals. Hospital health promotion evolved from patient education about specific diseases to programs focused on modifying of lifestyle practices to prevent future debilitating conditions. Studies conducted in the early 1980s show hospital-based health promotion programs increasing in number and including such target populations as senior citizens, children, business people, and hospital employees. However, the extent of involvement of the rural hospital in offering health promotion programs has not been clearly established. The current study was conducted to determine the status of health promotion programs in rural North Carolina hospitals. Elements considered were types of programs, target audiences, methods of financing, staff use, and availability of specialized facilities for health promotion programs. The results indicate rural hospitals do offer health promotion programs, but their primary focus is on hospital employees. Most programs are offered at low or no cost, making those offered for the community readily accessible. If input from the community is used and programming is aimed at specific health needs of rural populations, the rural hospital could make a significant contribution to an overall primary prevention strategy, lowering community health care costs.  相似文献

A course incorporating concepts of wellness with nutrition intervention strategies was developed and targeted to graduate students in the health education and wellness program. Pretest/final test evaluations of course participants indicated significant increases in students' nutrition knowledge and confidence in their ability to perform tasks identified in the course objectives. By offering courses for future wellness professionals that emphasize nutrition education strategies and resource selection, the number and quality of nutrition-related programs offered at work sites might increase.  相似文献

Health care education programs, regardless of the discipline, will face similar challenges and issues related to students with disabilities. These are likely to include issues related to admission, retention, and academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, and services. A review of the literature reveals limited information beyond medical and nursing education programs, although students with disabilities are enrolled in education programs in other health care disciplines. Recent research indicates that students with disabilities are enrolling in health care education programs with increasing frequency. Educators and administrators will benefit from a better understanding of disability law and how it impacts education programs. Further, this knowledge should allow health care educators to be more proactive in regard to students with disabilities and to maintain a greater degree of autonomy over their respective programs. This report reviews pertinent legislation and case law as it applies to students with disabilities in health care education.  相似文献

Planning skills are one of the seven essential responsibilities of health educators, according to the National Commission of Health Education Credentialing program; yet little information is available about who provides training in planning, what type of training is offered, and what planning models are taught. A survey of 253 accredited graduate and undergraduate health education programs (response rate = 56%) was undertaken to gather information about planning and the professional preparation of health educators. Results revealed that planning instructors were primarily full-time, experienced, and about one half were CHES certified. Overall, 88% (113/129) of respondents taught the PRECEDE-PROCEED model, and 62% (81/131) taught the planned approach to community health (PATCH) model. Few planning differences were found at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Content analysis of 56 course syllabi revealed that 80% (45/56) required students to complete a program plan proposal or document as the culminating project for the course. Implications for teaching, research, and practice are discussed.  相似文献

This article examines two major challenges that beset contemporary social work education, namely, rapid and dramatic macro-level changes that are occurring in the social, political, economic and demographic realms and, also, the slow speed at which curriculum changes occur in institutions of higher education. Primarily employing managed care as an example, a series of recommendations are offered to improve social work education concerning health care. Among them are more efficient mechanisms for introducing curriculum changes, greater emphasis on research and evaluations skills, systematic monitoring of health care programs, preparation of public impact reports, better utilization of modern information technologies, and the introduction of mini-courses that can be adapted readily to emerging health care and educational needs.  相似文献

The aim of health education is to encourage health behaviors that promote a better quality of life and longer life expectancy. In the late 1960s, universities in the US began offering degree programs in health education. Most programs today require that at least one class be taken in epidemiology, where epidemiology involves the study of the distribution and determinants of disease frequency in human populations. In recent years, several competency areas have been set forth for health educators by the US National Commission for Health Education Credentialing. This paper specifically describes how training in epidemiology provides health educators with the ability to satisfy, in large part, these competency areas. The intent of this paper is to clarify to students and advisors of health education the rationale for requiring course work in epidemiology, as well as to emphasize that epidemiology is the cornerstone to all health education, whether conducted by physicians, nurses, or formally trained health educators.  相似文献

Effectively evaluating preparation programs for health services administrators is important for program providers, trainers, future employers, the health care system, and the American public. Because the methods employed for evaluation do not exist in a vacuum, policy formation with respect to learner outcomes assessment is a critical concern for all those interested in health care management issues. During the 1990s, the prevalent trend in evaluation is "assessment," which emphasizes performance-oriented outcomes rather than traditional testing approaches. This article examines the evolving role of assessment from a higher education policy perspective. Current trends and issues in general education, teacher testing, and nursing home administrator preparation are brought to bear on the problem of how to implement the goals of assessment. People in rural areas often lack the financial resources, workforce, and professional network needed to sustain a diabetes education pro gram in their own community. HealthInsight, a nonprofit organization that works to improve the quality of health care in its community, developed a 2-day seminar in an effort to facilitate the networking of rural health professionals who educate patients with diabetes and to help those educators better learn how to use existing resources. Participants included nurses, dietitians, diabetes educators, quality managers, and education directors from hospitals and home health agencies in both rural and metropolitan areas. Speakers presented information on a variety of topics related to program development, and a resource manual containing numerous materials was given to each participant. At the end of the seminar, the group turned in goals for their own programs. Too often, providers of health care compete rather than collaborate with one another. There is a great need for such networking opportunities among health care professionals working on common goals--especially in rural areas.  相似文献

A body of meaningful research on the effectiveness of some health education interventions is developing. The emerging health education literature changes the value of innovation for health educators. The growing availability of well-researched methods requires that health educators favor tested programs over innovation in most circumstances. But it is largely up to leaders in the field of health education to assure that, as the literature becomes more meaningful, health educators have access to that meaning. This could be accomplished in part by an ongoing program of small conferences among leading health educators designed to produce clear statements on the practice implications of new research findings. The availability and promotion of these perspectives on health education practice would help health educators deliver research-based programs despite the demand for trivia they frequently face.  相似文献

Continuing education of health care providers plays an important role in producing a health work force that is efficient and effective. In India public health education has primarily relied on conventional methods of training. However, such methods have limitations in equipping the health workforce of a vast and varied country like India. This paper analyzes the current status of distance education in public health and lists the various courses that are presently available in India through the distance education mode. Presently 25 institutions in India are offering 69 courses in various domains of public health through distance education. The providers of these programs comprised both government and private educational institutions. This paper also points out the role and importance of various stakeholders in the design and delivery of distance education programs in public health and raises key areas that need attention in the governance of such programs. It urges the use of digital technology in the delivery of distance education programs and points out how distance education that is designed and delivered using the latest technology could address the current gap in training human resources for health in India.  相似文献

To assess the current status of food science instruction in undergraduate dietetic education, a survey was conducted of those persons responsible for teaching this subject in 267 Plan IV and 65 Coordinated Undergraduate Programs. Responses were received from 155 institutions offering a total of 177 programs. Factors examined included the number and academic background of faculty members teaching food science, the structure of the first course in food science, the structure of advanced food science courses required or offered to undergraduate dietetic students, and perceived adequacy of course content. Fifty-eight percent of the respondents had or were candidates for doctoral degrees, and 37% had master's degrees. The results indicated that although all programs offered a beginning course in food science, the required prerequisites and level of difficulty of subject matter varied. Fifty-three percent of the programs required at least one advanced food science course. More than 95% of both beginning and advanced courses are structured to include both lecture and laboratory. Although a majority of respondents indicated satisfaction with the adequacy of course content currently being offered, many made recommendations for improvements. Other concerns included difficulty in locating textbooks and other suitable instructional materials, isolation from others teaching food science, and a lack of standards for content to be included in basic and advanced courses.  相似文献

The use of peer education programs to promote sexual health has been widely accepted because of the potential of such programs to be implemented in a cost-effective manner in various settings and because peers are considered more convincing than outsiders. In addition, the thousands of people who have received training to become peer educators constitute a new generation of social work and health professionals who are not embarrassed by sexuality. Problems encountered by peer health education programs include sustainability of volunteers and funding, difficulty in assessing the impact of a program (especially cost-effectiveness), and the lack of appropriate monitoring and evaluation indicators. Given the large turnover of peer educators and the resources needed to provide week-long residential training courses, new methods of training are needed that are less labor intensive and more cost effective. Another problem is that many facilitators of peer health education programs lack a background in health promotion, and sometimes peer education programs for similar audiences compete or send contradictory messages because of a lack of coordination.  相似文献

Patient education within the pediatric-care setting can be defined as any combination of planned learning experiences designed to facilitate adaptations of behavior conducive to health. It is directed both toward patients and toward significant adult caretakers in the child's environment. Additionally, health promotion and health education outside of the patient-care setting are required to promote child health. These efforts include legislation directed toward environmental hazards as well as community- and school-based health education programs. Although educating children and their parents is a routine part of pediatric health care, patient education efforts often reflect poorly applied principles of learning. Social learning theory provides useful constructs that can serve as a basis for developing, implementing, and evaluating pediatric patient education. These constructs focus attention on environmental influences on the learner, the role of modeled behavior for health outcomes in children, and the key concepts of perceived self-efficacy and family and social support.  相似文献

Distance education is an exploding phenomenon that allows people to pursue higher education on their own time, at a pace that meets their needs, in locations where there are no colleges and universities, or where there is not a desired program of study. This study examined the use of distance education in undergraduate dietetic education programs and the opportunities for obtaining an undergraduate degree in dietetics solely via distance education. A survey was sent to all directors (n = 279) of undergraduate programs accredited/approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education to determine the current status and projected future use of distance education in their institutions' on-campus programs. The survey had a 54% response rate. Approximately 32% (n = 150) of undergraduate dietetics programs offer distance education courses in some format. Institutions that offer nondietetics distance education courses were more likely to offer dietetics distance education courses. The most common distance education format utilized in dietetics was 100% Internet courses (48%). The most common distance education dietetics course offered was a basic or introductory nutrition course (31%). From the data of courses offered, or permitted to be transferred, it would not be possible for a student to complete an undergraduate degree in dietetics solely via distance education methodologies at the time this study was conducted.  相似文献

The Nutrition Academic Award received by Tufts University School of Medicine strengthened our first-year Nutrition and Medicine course and clearly resulted in more nutrition in third-year clerkships and residency programs. Standardized patient cases in nutrition counseling for cardiovascular disease and weight loss were developed and incorporated into the clerkships and residency programs in internal medicine and family medicine. This was a value-added benefit that provided practice in initiating lifestyle changes and motivational skills, while expanding nutrition education. Eight standardized patient educators were trained in collaboration with physicians in internal and family medicine. Six slide shows on nutrition topics, 1-2 h each, were developed and included clinical cases, dietary analysis, and patient handouts. The Medicine Clerkship included 4 nutrition sessions and the standardized patient experience, whereas the Family Medicine Clerkship included 1 nutrition session and the standardized patient experience. Working with faculty in the Department of Family Medicine, we developed a nutrition mentoring program for the family medicine residents and used 3 nutrition messages that were a modification of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet to teach diet evaluation, intervention strategies, feedback from nutrition referrals, and follow-up. Seven sessions on nutrition and chronic disease with cases were offered to the residents in family medicine, which concluded with a nutrition intervention session using standardized patient educators. This expanded nutrition program in internal and family medicine along with the standardized patient experience receives excellent ratings from physicians, residents, and medical students.  相似文献

Program planning for patient safety is challenging because intervention-oriented surveillance data are not yet widely available to those working in this nascent field. Even so, health educators are uniquely positioned to contribute to patient safety intervention efforts because their theoretical training provides them with a guide for designing and implementing prevention programs. This article demonstrates the utility of applying health education concepts from three prominent patient safety campaigns, including the concepts of risk perception, community participation, and social marketing. The application of these theoretical concepts to patient safety programs suggests that health educators possess a knowledge base and skill set highly relevant to patient safety and that their perspective should be increasingly brought to bear on the design and evaluation of interventions that aim to protect patients from preventable medical error.  相似文献

Jails are a unique setting for health education. The Tuberculosis (TB) Prevention Project was designed to improve completion of care for latent TB infection in released inmates. As part of an ongoing clinical trial to improve rates of completion, educators provided TB-focused educational sessions to 1,027 inmates. This article describes the educational sessions and illustrates some of the barriers to working in a jail setting and strategies to overcome them. The nature of the jail itself, inmate characteristics, the characteristics of educators, and the educational sessions themselves interacted in different ways to enhance or impair the interaction. Jail is a setting in which the population is at high risk for a number of health problems and health education is increasingly important.  相似文献

The objective of the study described in this article was to determine the perceived continuing-education needs of employed public health educators. A three-wave mailing of a questionnaire was sent to a national sample of 500 public health educators who were asked to rate their preparation on 41 subcompetencies. Of 299 returned surveys (63%), 149 indicated that they were not currently practicing public health educators. Thus, analysis was based on 150 respondents. Six subcompetencies were perceived by 25% or more of the respondents as topics in which they needed more training. Health educators reported a need for continuing education, focused primarily on administration and evaluation of programs and applying appropriate research principles. Furthermore, the public health educators overwhelmingly preferred to attend a conference or workshop (85%) as their method of obtaining further continuing education. Health education programs and professional organizations need to take note of the identified continuing-education needs when developing future educational programs to adequately update health educators.  相似文献
