This study compared the effectiveness of an AIDS knowledge-only program (knowledge) with a combined program of AIDS knowledge and contact with people having HIV/AIDS (PHA) (knowledge-contact) in reducing nursing students’ stigma and discrimination towards PHA and in enhancing their emotional competence to serve PHA. Eighty-nine nursing students from two universities in Hong Kong were randomly assigned to either the knowledge or the knowledge-contact condition. All participants completed measures of AIDS knowledge, stigmatizing attitudes, fear of contagion, willingness to treat, positive affect, and negative affect at pre-test, post-test, and six-week follow-up. Findings showed that in both groups, significant improvement in AIDS knowledge, stigmatizing attitudes, fear of contagion, willingness to treat, and negative affect were found at post-test. The effects on AIDS knowledge, fear of contagion, willingness to treat, and negative affect were sustained at follow-up for both groups. Intergroup comparisons at post-test showed that the effectiveness of knowledge-contact program was significantly greater than knowledge program in improving stigmatizing attitudes. No significant difference between the two groups was found at follow-up. Findings showed the short-term effect of contact in improving nursing students’ attitudes and emotional competence in serving PHA. Implications for research and training of nursing staff were discussed.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine changes in nutrition knowledge, attitude and practice of 8-year-old school children after receiving a nutrition education package. A total of 418 school children from urban and rural areas participated in this study. The intervention group consisted of 237 children while 181 children who did not receive the nutrition education package acted as controls. The nutrition education programme that was conducted for 3 weeks comprised of a video viewing session and a comic reading session followed by exercise questions as reinforcement for each session, and also classroom activities. Knowledge, attitude and practice questionnaires were distributed to the children before (pre-intervention) and after (postintervention) receiving the nutrition education programme. A follow-up visit was conducted six months after the programme had elapsed. The results obtained indicated that the nutrition knowledge score increased significantly in the intervention group from 48.3±13.2 at pre-test to 54.6±16.2 in post-test and 55.0±14.3 in follow-up test (p<0.05). The nutrition attitude score also increased significantly from 68.7±15.5 at pre-intervention to 72.6±15.0 and 74.7±15.8 during post-test and follow-up test respectively (p<0.05). However, the nutrition practice score had no significant improvement in both groups throughout the study period. There were no significant changes in the control group in knowledge, attitude and practice scores at pre, post and follow-up tests. In conclusion, this study showed that a good nutrition education programme had a positive impact whereby better nutrition knowledge, attitude and healthy eating habits in children were seen. It is hoped that the improvements would be sustained throughout their lives.  相似文献

Crandell et al., reported that education programs such as hearing conservation programs (HCPs) represent the most common and well-recognized procedure in reducing the incidence of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of an HCP in changing knowledge and attitudes toward exposures to high intensity sounds or noise among adolescents aged 12-14 years. Local middle school students in physical education classes were recruited for participation. Sixty-four middle school students between the ages of 12 and 14 received pre- and post-test measures and participated in the HCP. The pre-test measure had 24 questions that included 5 demographic questions and 19 Likert-type questions [modified from the Youth Attitude to Noise Scale] that assess adolescents' attitudes towards noise; and a post-test measure included the identical 24 questions of the pre-test measure in addition to three subjective questions. A Wilcoxon signed rank test and a Two-Factor Analysis of Variance were completed to assess changes in knowledge and attitudes toward noise among the study population after receiving the HCP. A statistically significant reduction (P< 0.003) in pro-noise attitudes among the adolescents was present after the intervention. It was established that an HCP facilitated a change in pro-noise attitudes among adolescents. Further, the students thought this program facilitated learning of the auditory system and healthy hearing behaviors.  相似文献

INTRODUCTION: Family physicians (FPs) underuse opportunities to provide smoking cessation advice during routine consultations with patients who smoke. Distance learning is a promising approach to continuing medical education, particularly for FPs practicing in rural and remote areas. We developed a distance learning module, conducting a randomized trial to assess its educational impact on knowledge, attitudes and skills ("competence"), self-rated competence, confidence, and readiness to change. METHODS: Volunteer FPs were randomly allocated to receive either a distance learning module or a preventive care guideline. Self-administered questionnaires were completed at baseline and post-test. RESULTS: Fifty-three FPs enrolled in the study. There were no changes in knowledge or attitudes. Change in skills was limited to a reduction in use of one ineffective technique, namely "nicotine fading." Change in self-rated competence between baseline and post-test was significantly greater for the intervention than for the control group, however (p = .03). Although self-ratings of confidence increased significantly between baseline and post-test in both groups, the magnitude of change was no greater in the intervention than the control group (p = .3). Both groups demonstrated only nonsignificant shifts in readiness to change. DISCUSSION: These modest changes are of uncertain educational value, inviting caution before recommending distance learning approaches to promote smoking cessation advice in family practice.  相似文献

A prospective health‐education research project about AIDS knowledge and attitudes towards AIDS was conducted in Athens and nine adjacent municipalities in west Attica, Greece. Socioeconomic and demographic data, AIDS knowledge, and attitudinal information were collected from 1552 respondents and analysed treating the attitudes of stigmatization, discrimination and fear towards AIDS as the dependent variable. Statistically significant correlations were found between each of the three attitudinal variables and the independent ones; specifically, age, place of residence, marital status and level of AIDS knowledge. Our working hypothesis—that the higher the level of AIDS knowledge, the lower the level of discrimination and stigmatization—was supported by our data. The relationship between AIDS knowledge and fear was less clear. Fear probably inhibits a rational approach to screening for HIV, and more empirical research is needed about fear and its interaction with stigmatizing and discriminatory attitudes and behaviours. Such research should be aimed at identifying population groups ‘at risk’ of expressing high levels of negative social attitudes about AIDS so that educational programmes can be appropriately designed.  相似文献

School-based depression screening and education programs are recommended for addressing the high rates of children’s mental illness. The objectives of this study were to (1) identify Minnesota parent attitudes regarding the provision of school-based depression and suicide screening and education and (2) identify predictors of parent support for these school-based programs. A random sample of 1,300 Minnesota households with children ages 5–18 years was surveyed by mail. Chi-square tests and regression analyses were used to detect differences in parent support for depression and suicide screening and education across demographic categories, and parent beliefs and knowledge about depression and suicide. The response rate of eligible households was 43 % (N = 511). Overall, 84–89 % of parents supported school-based depression and suicide screening and education. After adjusting for all variables, parent support for depression screening was associated with greater knowledge [OR 8.48, CI(1.30–55.21)] and fewer stigmatizing beliefs [OR 0.03, CI(0.01–0.12)]. Support for suicide screening was associated with fewer stigmatizing beliefs [OR 0.03, CI(0.01-0.10)]. Support for depression education was associated with fewer stigmatizing beliefs [OR 0.32, CI(0.10–1.00)] and lower educational attainment [OR 0.59, CI(0.40–0.89)]. Support for suicide education was associated with greater knowledge [OR 7.99, CI(1.02–62.68)], fewer stigmatizing beliefs [OR 0.26, CI(0.07–0.92)], and lower educational attainment [OR 0.60, CI(0.38–0.94)]. Parent support for school-based depression and suicide screening and education was high. Parent education to decrease stigmatizing beliefs and increase knowledge about depression and suicide may increase support among the minority of parents who do not endorse such programs.  相似文献

AMP! (Arts-based, Multiple component, Peer-education) is an HIV intervention developed for high school adolescents. AMP! uses interactive theater-based scenarios developed by trained college undergraduates to deliver messages addressing HIV/STI prevention strategies, healthy relationships, and stigma reduction towards people living with HIV/AIDS. We used a pre-test/post-test, control group study design to simultaneously assess intervention effect on ninth grade students in an urban county in California (N?=?159) and a suburban county in North Carolina (N?=?317). In each location, the control group received standard health education curricula delivered by teachers; the intervention group received AMP! in addition to standard health education curricula. Structural equation modeling was used to determine intervention effects. The post-test sample was 46 % male, 90 % self-identified as heterosexual, 32 % reported receiving free or reduced lunch, and 49 % White. Structural models indicated that participation in AMP! predicted higher scores on HIV knowledge (p?=?0.05), HIV awareness (p?=?0.01), and HIV attitudes (p?=?0.05) at the post-test. Latent means comparison analyses revealed post-test scores were significantly higher than pre-test scores on HIV knowledge (p?=?0.001), HIV awareness (p?=?0.001), and HIV attitudes (p?=?0.001). Further analyses indicated that scores rose for both groups, but the post-test scores of intervention participants were significantly higher than controls (HIV knowledge (p?=?0.01), HIV awareness (p?=?0.01), and HIV attitudes (p?=?0.05)). Thus, AMP!’s theater-based approach shows promise for addressing multiple adolescent risk factors and attitudes concerning HIV in school settings.  相似文献

This study was designed to evaluate potential preventive effects of a cultural adaption of the Focus on Kids (FOK) program among Chinese adolescents through a quasi-experimental intervention trial in Nanjing, China. High school students were assigned to either experimental groups (n = 140) or control groups (n = 164) by schools (with three schools in each condition). The participants completed a confidential questionnaire at baseline and 6-month post-intervention with a follow-up rate of 94.4% (287 of 304). The outcome measures included HIV knowledge, HIV-related perceptions based on the protection motivation theory, stigmatizing attitude toward people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), intentions of health-related risk behaviors and sexual intercourse in the previous 6 months. Results showed a significant intervention effect at 6-month post-intervention in increasing HIV knowledge, decreasing perceptions of response cost associated with abstinence and reducing stigmatizing attitudes toward PLWHA, after controlling for key demographic characteristics and relevant baseline measures. Further mediation analysis suggested that HIV knowledge mediated the effect of intervention on stigma reduction. Findings from this study support the feasibility and initial efficacy of the cultural adaptation of FOK HIV prevention program among high school students in China.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To determine if an educational program can improve knowledge and attitude among ancillary staff on end-of-life care issues in a long-term care facility. DESIGN: A pilot study using a pre- and post-test design prior to and at the completion of an education intervention. SETTING: A long-term care facility in suburban Philadelphia that has 150 assisted living beds and 53 nursing home beds. PARTICIPANTS: Long-term care ancillary staff including certified nursing assistants (called "care managers" at this facility), social workers, recreational therapists, and food service workers. INTERVENTION: The intervention was a novel educational program consisting of five in-service lectures with accompanying take home self-study modules for ancillary staff in long-term care entitled "Dignity in Dementia." MEASUREMENTS: Ancillary staff attitudes and knowledge on end-of-life issues in dementia were assessed with a knowledge and attitude questionnaire pre- and post-intervention. One-year follow-up questionnaires were administered to assess long-term maintenance of knowledge and attitude changes. RESULTS: Thirty-two ancillary staff completed the pre-intervention questionnaires. Twenty-nine ancillary staff completed the post-intervention questionnaires (90.6%). There was a significant change in the end-of-life knowledge level of the ancillary staff (P =.0270). Specifically, there was a significant change in one question dealing with dementia as a terminal disease (P = .006). There were also significant changes in the average attitude scores of the ancillary staff. (P = .0242). One-year follow-up revealed that both knowledge and attitude changes were maintained. CONCLUSIONS: This pilot project demonstrates that a staff educational program on end-of-life care for dementia residents can improve end-of-life knowledge and attitudes among long-term care ancillary staff and that this improvement can be maintained for up to 1 year. This intervention is easily reproducible in the long-term care setting. This project is an important step in helping improve end-of-life care for dementia residents in long-term care settings by improving the knowledge and attitudes of their caregivers.  相似文献

ObjectivesThis study assessed the prevalence and changes of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) knowledge and stigmatizing attitudes in 2006, 2008, and 2011.MethodsThree cross-sectional surveys were conducted in 2006, 2008, and 2011. A cross-sectional sample of high school students in Seoul, South Korea was targeted. A self-administered questionnaire measuring general and transmission and discriminatory attitudes was used.ResultsMisconceptions about casual contact were widespread, even though the proportion responding incorrectly decreased significantly over the 5-year period. The respondents in all surveys displayed a high level of discrimination against those with HIV/AIDS in some situations, particularly in the idea of HIV/AIDS making the respondent feel disgusted (63.3% in 2006, 57.5% in 2008, and 52.6% in 2011), avoiding sitting with people with HIV/AIDS (50.6% in 2006, 50.5% in 2008, and 48.5% in 2011), and blaming those with HIV for becoming infected (46.6% in 2006, 42.8% in 2008, and 43.0% in 2011). Even though respondents had a high level of stigmatizing attitudes, the survey showed that the stigma has declined over the 5-year period.ConclusionThe survey results showed that public health policy should recognize that HIV stigmatizing attitudes persist in Korea. This finding has implications for the development of intervention programs focusing on reducing the levels of discrimination.  相似文献

ObjectiveThis study investigated whether education about gene-by-environment interaction (G × E) concepts could improve G × E knowledge and positively affect empathy and weight stigma.DesignWe conducted a randomized trial using a 2 × 2 between-subjects design.SettingOnline.ParticipantsFive hundred eighty-two American participants from the Prolific platform.InterventionParticipants were randomly assigned to watch an educational or a control video. Participants then watched a set of vignette scenarios that depicted what it is like to have a predisposition toward obesogenic eating behaviors from either a first-person or third-person perspective.Main Outcome Measure(s)Participants completed questionnaires measuring G × E knowledge, causal attributions, weight stigma, and empathy postintervention.AnalysisTwo-by-two between-subjects ANOVAs and exploratory mediation analyses were conducted.ResultsParticipants who watched the educational video demonstrated greater G × E knowledge, reported higher empathy toward the characters in the vignette scenarios and held fewer stigmatizing attitudes (notably blame) toward individuals with higher weight. Exploratory mediation analyses indicated that the educational video led to these positive downstream effects by increasing the extent to which participants attributed genetic causes to eating behaviors. Conclusions and ImplicationsEducation about G × E causes of eating behaviors can have beneficial downstream effects on attitudes toward people with higher weight.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Medical students have traditionally received little education in palliative care. However, in 1999, as part of a revised medical curriculum, Year 4 undergraduates at Liverpool University participated in a 2-week programme of education in palliative care. To assess the effect of the education programme, 2 assessment scales were identified: the Self-efficacy in Palliative Care Scale (SEPC) (assessing efficacy in communication, patient management and multiprofessional teamworking) and the Thanatophobia Scale (assessing attitudes towards palliative care). The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of these scales. METHODS: The scales were examined by 5 palliative care doctors for content validity and appropriate wording. Following this, the SEPC and Thanatophobia Scales were completed by the undergraduates (n = 139) prior to and after completion of the education programme. RESULTS: Both scales were analysed independently on pre- and post-test scores. Cronbach's alphas of 0.84-0.85 and 0.92-0.95 were recorded, respectively, indicating high reliability. Varimax rotated principal components analysis of the SEPC Scale suggested 3 distinct factors, as theoretically expected, with high factor loadings of 0.45-0.89 at pre- and post-test. Principal components analysis of the Thanatophobia Scale suggested only 1 factor underlies the scale, as theoretically expected. All 7 items had high factor loadings of 0.60-0.81 at pre- and post-test. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that the SEPC and Thanatophobia Scales are valid and reliable assessment scales that may be of use when evaluating the impact of an education programme.  相似文献

Poor oral health knowledge is thought to significantly contribute to the incidence of early childhood caries, the most common childhood disease in the U.S. This study assessed the effectiveness of a web-based educational program in increasing oral health and caries transmission knowledge, attitudes and planned behavior among mothers and primary caregivers. Study participants were recruited from subscribers to an online health information newsletter distributed by a national dental insurance company and from visitors to a health information website sponsored by the same company. Participants completed pre- and post-intervention surveys and viewed a brief educational program. Results were analyzed for pre- to post-test changes in knowledge and attitudes. Planned behavior change was also assessed. 459 participants completed pre-and post-test surveys. The sample was typically more insured (91.3 %), and college educated (76.9 %), than the general population. At baseline, respondents were knowledgeable about caries and its prevention; however, their specific knowledge about caries transmission was limited. There was a significant increase in caries knowledge from baseline to follow-up, particularly regarding caries transmission. At baseline less than half of the participants (48.8 %) knew that mothers/primary caregivers play a large role in passing cavity causing germs to children and 43.1 % knew that there is a defined period of time when the risk of transmission of cariogenic bacteria is greatest; however in post-testing 99.6 % and 98.3 % answered these question correctly respectively (p < 0.001). Results indicate that a web-delivered oral health intervention can increase dental knowledge and increase participants’ plans to prevent maternal caries transmission. The provision of web-delivered education to primary caregivers can be an effective and low cost strategy for promoting maternal and infant oral health.  相似文献

Anecdotal evidence suggests that the HIV/AIDS prevalence rates in several African armed forces are high, with gender inequality rendering female military personnel more vulnerable to the disease. The objective of this study was to replicate a successful videotape-based HIV prevention intervention among Nigerian female military personnel in an effort to establish the cross-cultural stability, feasibility and cost-effectiveness of this approach in resource-limited countries. Enlisted women (N346) were recruited from two cantonments in Southwestern Nigeria and randomly assigned to either (a) a 5-session video-based, small group, cognitive-behavioral, HIV prevention intervention, or (b) a 5-session, video-based, contact-matched, HIV education control condition. Participants provided self-report of their HIV/AIDS-related knowledge and sexual behaviors at baseline, 3 and 6 months after completing the intervention. The results indicate that the motivational skills-building intervention did not improve participants' knowledge of HIV/AIDS any better than did the HIV education control condition at each assessment period, but it significantly increased condom use among women in this group by 53.6% at 3-month follow-up. HIV preventive behaviors among women in the motivational skills-building intervention group improved significantly, being 2 and 3 times more, compared to women in the HIV education control group at 3-month and 6-month follow-up assessments. The intervention also significantly improved behavioral intentions of participants as well as reduced alcohol use before sex by 25%, after 3 months; and number of sexual partners by 12% after 6 months. Women in the intervention group were five times more likely than women in HIV education control group to suggest that their new male partners use condom. These findings indicate that a videotape-based, HIV prevention intervention is a feasible and effective approach to HIV prevention among female military personnel from sub-Saharan Africa.  相似文献

This study presents data regarding social work practitioner experiences, attitudes and knowledge about alcoholism. A standardized instrument was used to survey BSWs and MSWs (N = 105) at three sites in Canada. Significant findings were: (a) these practitioners had low levels of knowledge about alcoholism as measured on the Alcohol Knowledge Scale (AKS), and (b) professional experiences, not personal ones, shaped their knowledge. The latter included whether they had participated in any post graduate coursework/continuing education or conducted research with this population. Implications are directed toward curriculum development for educators and practitioners working in this field.  相似文献

ObjectivesThis study examined the sex differentials for specific aspects of knowledge regarding HIV, stigmatizing attitudes toward people with HIV/AIDS (PWHAs) and sexual behavior. In addition, the factors that affect stigmatizing attitudes toward PWHAs were investigated.MethodsThe population of this study comprised of senior high students in Seoul, Korea. Eight high schools were selected randomly and 1566 adolescents participated in the survey. A total sample of 1548 cases (18 cases were excluded) was used for analysis. A self-administered questionnaire measuring their general and transmission and discriminatory attitudes was used.ResultsThe level of HIV/AIDS knowledge among Korean adolescents was low, as indicated by a correct response rate of 54% (7.0 out of 13). The students answered correctly about HIV transmission by kissing at 50.2%, toilets at 59.4%, cup sharing at 57.4%, and daily school life at 60.5%. The level of discriminatory attitudes towards HIV-infected persons was high. Boys reported a higher proportion of sexual experience (7.0% vs. 2.6%, OR = 2.89, p < 0.001). Only 39.0% used a condom during their last sexual encounter and more girls (53.3%) than boys (35.3%) reported using a condom.ConclusionsThese findings highlight the need for increasing HIV knowledge, reducing HIV stigma, and providing sex education focusing on safer sex practices.  相似文献

Alcohol use has become normative for adolescents in most developed and developing countries, with serious health implications. In response to this problem, the World Health Organization convened a group of investigators in 1985 from centres in four countries--Australia, Chile, Norway and Swaziland--to participate in a pilot study on the efficacy of the social influences approach in school-based alcohol education. The goal of the educational programme was to delay onset and minimize involvement of alcohol use among 13-14 year-old adolescents. 25 schools in the 4 countries, representing middle- and lower-class populations, were randomly assigned to peer-led education, teacher-led education or a control condition. The programme focused on the social and environmental influences to drink alcohol, and skills to resist those influences. It consisted of 5 lessons over 2 months. Baseline and post-test data measured alcohol-use knowledge, attitudes, skills and friends' drinking patterns. Data were collected immediately prior to and 2 months following the educational programme. The data converge on the finding that peer-led education appears to be efficacious in reducing alcohol use across a variety of settings and cultures.  相似文献

Aim of the studyTo study the predictors of knowledge level, attitudes and quality of life of type 1(T1D) and type 2 (T2D) Tunisian diabeticsPopulation and methodsWe undertook an analytical cross-sectional study. The questionnaire was administered in Arabic and contained a section collecting socio-demographic, clinical and diabetes-specific data. The following sections contained the Arabic-translated and validated versions of the “Simplified Diabetes Knowledge Scale”, the “Diabetes Attitude Scale-3” and the “Diabetes Health Profile-18” to assess level of diabetes knowledge, attitudes towards the disease and diabetics’ quality of life.ResultsWe collected 186 T1D (18.5%) and 821 T2D (81.5%) completed questionnaires. A good level of knowledge about diabetes was indicated in T1D patients by glycemic self-monitoring and by secondary and university education, urban housing, stable employment, insulin therapy and prior therapeutic education, while regular medical follow-up was of particular importance in T2DM patients. Smoking and diabetes complications were predictors of a negative attitude towards the disease in T1D and T2D respectively. Diabetics’ Impaired quality of life was predicted by age < 40 years and a low level of knowledge about diabetes in T1D and by female sex, insulin therapy and a low level of knowledge about diabetes in T2D.ConclusionPredictors of the level of knowledge, attitudes and quality of life of diabetics may be a basis for establishing a therapeutic education program tailored to the different populations.  相似文献

In the context of social representation theory and the AIDS risk reduction model, it has been claimed that stigmatizing, blaming and stereotyping attitudes make people feel less at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS, and that this, in turn, results in them taking fewer precautions in their sexual behaviour. Previous research has failed to provide convincing evidence to support these claims. The present study provided a test of the claims that addressed some of the methodological issues identified in the earlier research. A sample of 460 young people from Ghana, ranging in age from 15 to 28 years (mean = 18), completed a questionnaire that measured the relevant constructs. The results supported the claims in relation to stigmatizing and intended sexual risk behaviour, but not stigmatizing and actual sexual risk behaviour. Although the latter two were correlated, this was not mediated by reduced perceptions of vulnerability. Claims in relation to blaming and stereotyping were not supported. Contrary to expectation, specific blaming and stereotyping attitudes that constructed HIV/AIDS as a sexual disease were associated with safer intended sexual behaviour, and this relationship was mediated by feeling at greater risk.  相似文献
