Cardiac paraganglioma (chemodectoma): a case report and review of the literature.

A rare case of paraganglioma (chemodectoma) of the heart is reported. This is the fifth case reported in the world literature and only the second case discovered in a living person. A review of the historical background, embryology, anatomy, and pathology of the paraganglia is provided. The previously reported four cases are also discussed.     

Epididymal metastasis from prostatic carcinoma

A case of epididymal metastasis from carcinoma of the prostate with an unusual presentation is reported. A review of the literature disclosed only 10 reported cases of this rare finding. A mechanism for the method of metastasis in this patient is proposed.     

Ganglioglioma of the brain stem. Case report

A case of brain-stem ganglioglioma is reported. A review of the literature revealed only 13 other reported cases. Brain-stem gangliogliomas usually become symptomatic in the first and second decades of life and involve the medulla and pons. Clinical improvement and prolonged survival have been reported after partial resection.     

Simultaneous fracture of carpal scaphoid and trapezium

A previously undescribed simultaneous fracture of carpal scaphoid and trapezium (greater multangular) is reported. A short discussion on fractures of the trapezium together with the reported associated scaphoid fracture is given and the probable mechanism of injury is considered.     

Formalin treatment for massive bladder hemorrhage: Complications

A case is reported of severe bilateral ureterohydronephrosis secondary to formalin instillation in the bladder for massive hematuria. A review of the literature on the use of formalin intravesically, with emphasis on complications and dosage, is reported.     

Ectopic liver tissue within the umbilical cord.

A solid mass in the umbilical cord is a very rare finding. A neonate with isolated ectopic liver tissue found in the umbilical cord is reported. This is the first known such reported case.     

Carcinoid tumour of the thymus gland: report of a case.

CARCINOID OF THE THYMUS IS A RARE PROBLEM A case is reported to add to only 16 previously reported. None of these 17 patients had the carcinoid syndrome. Complete surgical excision, if possible, is the treatment of choice.     

Management of prolapsed ureterocele: past and present.

A prolapsed ureterocele occurs more frequently in female subjects than in male subjects. At least 64 cases in female patients have been reported and an additional case in a 2-year-old girl is reported herein. Only 3 cases have been reported in male subjects. A method for management of a non-reducible ureterocele in female patients is outlined and discussed briefly.     

Primary sarcoma of penis

A case of primary sarcoma of the penis is reported. A very slow growth rate of this tumor was observed and prompted conservative treatment. A review of the literature is included. More cases of penile sarcoma should be reported in order to study the not well-documented natural history of this disease.     

Membranous atresia of the intra-abdominal oesophagus. A case report

A premature neonate who presented with inability to feed is reported. The unusual radiological appearances stimulated further studies to define the level of atresia in the intra-abdominal oesophagus. A membranous atresia was disrupted using a thoraco-abdominal approach. However, this rare variant of oesophageal atresia is correctable through an abdominal approach and awareness may prevent unnecessary thoracotomy. Recovery was uneventful. Our patient is only the second reported with intra-abdominal membranous atresia of the oesophagus, and is the first reported survivor.     

Sacral fracture with pseudomeningocele and cerebrospinal fluid fistula: case report and review of the literature

A patient who sustained an isolated transverse sacral fracture is presented. A large ventral sacral pseudomeningocele with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fistula developed. Eighteen previous cases of traumatic pseudomeningocele have been documented. A review of those cases leads these authors to conclude that: transverse sacral fractures are rare and have not been reported in association with a pseudomeningocele formation; at the 4th sacral vertebra, this is the lowest reported pseudomeningocele; and CSF fistula with sacral fracture is distinctly uncommon, reported in only one previous case. The presenting symptoms, diagnostic evaluation, treatment, and prognosis are discussed.     

Nadroparin-induced skin necrosis then thrombocytosis in intensive care unit: difficulty in diagnosis

Skin necrosis is a rare complication in intensive care unit. A case-report of nadroparine-induced skin necrosis and thrombocytosis in a patient with traumatic paraplegia is reported. This case emphasised the difficulty in diagnosis despite absence of thrombopenia. A skin necrosis could suggest the diagnosis and a substitutive therapy must be administrated after heparin therapy withdrawal. A thrombocytosis is a little reported complication of low-molecular-weight heparins without complication.     

Unreduced anterior dislocation of the hip in a child

A case of unreduced anterior hip dislocation from trauma is reported, and the literature is reviewed. This is the fourth such case reported in a child.     

Extra digit arising from the forearm

A patient with an extra digit arising from the forearm is reported. This is the first such case reported in the English-language literature.     

Dental fear in Japan: Okayama Prefecture school study of adolescents and adults.

A total of 3,041 students and staff in middle school in Okayama Prefecture, Japan, were surveyed regarding dental fear. Over 88% reported fear, with 42.1% classified as having high fear. Almost 70% reported acquiring dental fear prior to junior high school. A majority reported being hurt at the last appointment. Delay of dental work was also reported for over 50% of the sample. Coping, pattern of physiological upset, nondental fears, and sex and age differences were also reported. Results suggest intervention is needed to address the major dental public health problems associated with dental fear.     

A rare case of caudal duplication

A rare case of caudal duplication is reported. The infant had two well-formed lower limbs and pelvis with external male genitalia attached to the epigastrium. This is only the second reported case in which the parasite was attached to the epigastrium and it is the first reported case of caudal duplication without omphalocele.     

Mature solid teratoma of the rectum: Report of a case

A case of an unusual occurrence of mature solid teratoma of the rectum is reported with a review of the literature. A 30-year-old woman presented with bleeding per anum without any alteration in her bowel habits. Sigmoidoscopy revealed a pedunculated polypoidal mass arising from the posterior wall of the rectum. A polypectomy specimen on microscopy showed the components of all the three germ layers. This may be the largest polypoidal type of rectal teratoma reported in the English literature to date. A review of the literature indicated only 50 previously reported cases, with all except one being female. The common presentations include prolapse and bleeding per anum.     

Chronic mucosal ulcerative colitis with malignant lymphoma: report of a case.

A CASE OF NON-Hodgkin's lymphoma arising in association with longstanding mucosal ulcerative colitis is reported. The clinical course of the patient is described, and a review of previously reported patients is made.     

Regression of Metastases after Nephrectomy for Renal Cell Carcinoma.

A case of an extensive renal cell carcinoma with temporary regression of pulmonary metastases is reported. The literature of similar reported cases is brefly reviewed.     

Depressive illness and abnormal sweat electrolytes. A case report

False-positive sweat electrolyte levels are infrequently reported in adolescent psychiatric conditions. A case is reported and the interpretation of elevated sweat electrolytes discussed.
