The effects of three principal constituents (sugar, spearmint, and gumbase) in chewing gum on EEG findings in 20 normal subjects were investigated. After they chewed the gumbase, theta activity decreased significantly at Fp2, O1, T3, T4, F4, P3, and Pz; alpha activity increased significantly at O1 and decreased significantly at Fpl, and beta activity increased significantly at Fpl, Fp2, O1, T3, T4, P3 and Pz. After they inhaled the spearmint, alpha activity decreased significantly at 02, F3, P4, and Fz, and beta increased significantly at 02, F3, P4, and Fz. The mean frequency of the alpha band was significantly higher than after 1 min at rest without inhalation. After the subjects chewed the gumbase with sucrose, theta activity increased at Fp2 and Fz; alpha activity increased significantly at T3; and beta activity decreased significantly at Fpl, Fp2, F4, P3, P4, Fz, and Pz. The mean frequency of the alpha band was significantly lower than after 1 min at rest without it at almost all the positions. These results suggest that the gumbase with sucrose induced relaxed concentration effects while inhalation of spearmint induced arousal effects. The chewing of gumbase showed arousal tendency.  相似文献

The relationship between the latencies and amplitudes of the N1 and P2 components of the visual evoked potential (VEP) and the psychophysiological state of the brain immediately preceding the time of the stimulus has been investigated in 7 male subjects. Power spectral measures in the delta, theta, alpha and beta bands of the 1 sec pre-stimulus EEG were used to assess the brain state, and low intensity flashes, delivered randomly between 2 and 6 whole seconds, were used as the stimuli. Trials were ranked separately according to the relative amounts of pre-stimulus power in each EEG band and were partitioned into groups by an equal pre-stimulus spectral power criterion. Averaged EPs were computed from these groups and multiple regression analysis was used to relate pre-stimulus spectral power values to EP features. Five of the 7 subjects displayed consistent increases in N1-P2 amplitude as a function of increasing pre-stimulus relative alpha power. The between-subjects effect of pre-stimulus EEG on N1 latency was small, but was moderate for P2 latency (both significant). Both N1 and P2 latency were found to decrease with increasing amounts of pre-stimulus relative delta and theta power.  相似文献

This study investigated brain wave activity associated with spinal cord injury (SCI). Electroencephalograms (EEG) were compared between 10 individuals with SCI and 10 age and sex matched able-bodied controls using a 64-channel EEG montage. SCI participants had chronic (>12 months) paraplegic clinically complete injuries. The 64 channels of EEG data were spread diffusely over the cortex and were compared for delta (2-4 Hz), theta (4-8 Hz), alpha (8-13 Hz), and beta (13-30 Hz) wave components of the EEG frequency spectra. No significant magnitude or directional changes were found in the delta (2-4 Hz) or theta (4-8 Hz) wave frequency bands between these two groups. However, significant and consistent decreased alpha wave (8-13 Hz) and increased beta wave activity (13-30 Hz) were found in the SCI participants across the cortex compared to the able-bodied control group. These findings suggest that the SCI group have increased neural processing compared to the able-bodied individuals, which may be related to ongoing reorganization of brain structures following SCI.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effects of stimulant medications on the Electroencephalography (EEG) of children with the combined type of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) together with excessive beta activity in their EEG. METHODS: Twenty ADHD and 20 control subjects participated in this study. EEG was recorded from 21 sites during an eyes-closed resting condition and Fourier transformed to provide estimates for total power and absolute and relative power in the delta, theta, alpha and beta bands, and for the theta/alpha and theta/beta ratios. Subjects were placed on a 6-month trial of a stimulant medication and a second EEG was recorded at the end of the trial. RESULTS: The unmedicated ADHD group had greater absolute and relative beta, less absolute and relative alpha, a higher theta/alpha and a lower theta/beta ratio than the control group. In the frontal regions the ADHD group had an increase in total power, absolute theta, absolute and relative beta and the theta/beta ratio, with greater relative delta, relative theta, and absolute and relative alpha in posterior regions. With medication use, absolute beta activity and frontal total power decreased, although these changes represented a reduction in power, not a normalisation. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that ADHD children with excessive beta activity in their EEG are probably not hypoaroused as previously suggested, and that beta activity in these children is probably only associated with the impulsivity and/or hyperactivity aspects of the disorder, but may not necessarily be associated with inattention. SIGNIFICANCE: This study is the first to investigate effects of stimulant medications on the EEG of ADHD children with excessive beta activity in their EEG.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated differences in intrahemispheric and interhemispheric electroencephalographic (EEG) coherences between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and control children, and between children with the Combined (ADHDcom) and Inattentive (ADHDin) types of ADHD. METHODS: Three age- and sex-matched groups of 40 children, aged 8-12 years, diagnosed with ADHDcom, ADHDin, and normal control children, participated in this study. EEG was recorded from 21 sites during an eyes-closed resting condition and Fourier transformed. Wave-shape coherence was calculated for 8 intrahemispheric electrode pairs (4 in each hemisphere), and 8 interhemispheric electrode pairs, within each of the delta, theta, alpha and beta bands. RESULTS: At shorter inter-electrode distances, ADHD children had elevated intrahemispheric coherences in the theta band and reduced lateral differences in the theta and alpha bands. At longer inter-electrode distances, ADHD children had lower intrahemispheric alpha coherences than controls. Frontally, ADHD children had interhemispheric coherences elevated in the delta and theta bands, and reduced in the alpha band. An alpha coherence reduction in temporal regions, and a theta coherence enhancement in central/parietal/occipital regions, were also apparent. ADHDcom had greater intrahemispheric theta and beta coherences than ADHDin. Frontally, ADHDcom had higher levels of interhemispheric coherences than ADHDin for the delta and theta bands. In central/parietal/occipital regions, beta coherences were elevated in ADHDcom. CONCLUSIONS: EEG coherences suggest reduced cortical differentiation and specialisation in ADHD, particularly in cortico-cortical circuits involving theta activity. Generally, ADHDcom children displayed greater anomalies than ADHDin children.  相似文献

Abstract  The present study aimed to examine the psychosomatic effect in the chewing of marketed gum using eletroencephalogram (EEG) as an index. The EEG were taken in two sets: (i) a resting period before chewing (control recording) and a resting record (post-resting recording) for examining reproducibility; and (ii) a control recording and resting period after gum-chewing for 3 min (post-chewing recording). The ratio of each frequency band to the total frequency power, the mean frequency of the alpha band and laterality of the frequency power was calculated. In the examination of the reproducibility, no statistically significant differences were observed between control recording and post-resting recording in all indices. In the reflection of EEG after gum-chewing, there were no significant differences between control recording and the post-chewing recording. However, a significant interaction was observed among these indices by analysis of variance. In addition, the alpha power in the post-chewing recording was significantly higher than that in the control recording at almost all the positions. In conclusion, the intra-individual reproducibility of EEG was confirmed in the recording method. Furthermore, it was suggested that a significant interaction and a rising trend of the mean frequency of the alpha band after gum-chewing reflected 'arousal' psychosomatic responses by the chewing of marketed gum.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated age-related changes and sex differences in the EEGs of normal children. METHODS: Forty boys and 40 girls, between the ages of 8 and 12 years, participated in this study. The EEG was recorded during an eyes-closed resting condition and Fourier transformed to provide estimates for total power, absolute and relative power in the delta, theta, alpha and beta bands, and for theta/alpha and theta/beta ratios. RESULTS: Absolute delta activity decreased with age. Relative delta and theta decreased and alpha and beta increased with increasing age. The theta/alpha and theta/beta ratios decreased with increasing age. All of these indicated a developmental reduction in slow wave activity. Maturational differences were found in the rates of change between the midline and the two hemispheres. In the absolute delta and the theta/beta ratio, the midline and the two hemispheres became more equipotential with age. In the beta band, power increased at a greater rate than in the two hemispheres. Sex differences were found, with males having less theta and more alpha than females. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicated that maturation occurs earlier at the midline than in the two hemispheres. Females were also found to have a developmental lag in the EEG compared with males.  相似文献

This study examined EEG abnormalities in adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We investigated EEG frequencies in 34 adults with ADHD and 34 control subjects. Two EEG readings were taken over 5 min intervals during an eyes-closed resting period with 21 electrodes placed in accordance with the international 10–20 system. Fourier transformation was performed to obtain absolute power density in delta, theta, alpha and beta frequency bands. The ADHD patients showed a significant increase of absolute power density in alpha and theta bands. No differences were found for beta activity. Our findings indicate that abnormalities in the EEG power spectrum of adults with ADHD are different than those described in children. Reliable discriminators between patients and healthy subjects in adulthood could be alpha and theta power density. Based on our results, we suggest further research involving longitudinal studies in ADHD patients to investigate the changes of EEG abnormalities with age.  相似文献

A new method for numerical analysis of EEG is described. It consists of fitting the EEG with orthogonal polynomials in several steps to separate the different frequencies contained in the original recording (high-frequency noise, beta, sigma, alpha, theta, delta, low-frequency noise). The original EEG is separated into 5 different signals with cutoff frequencies at 40, 18, 4 and 0.6 Hz. The activity in these signals is classified into the usual EEG bands by zero-crossing. The results are given as integrated values over 1 s in the different EEG bands, or wave by wave, each wave being described by its time of occurrence, amplitude and duration. This method is designed for accurate amplitude measurement in the frequency bands of EEG, particularly for application in psychiatry and psychophysiology.  相似文献

This study investigated EEG differences between two groups of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder combined type (ADHD), with or without comorbid oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and normal control subjects. Each group consisted of 20 males. All subjects were between the ages of 8 and 12 years, and groups were matched on age. EEG was recorded during an eyes-closed resting condition from 21 monopolar derivations, which were clustered into nine regions for analysis. The EEGs were Fourier transformed to provide absolute and relative power estimates for the delta, theta, alpha and beta bands. Values were also calculated for the theta/alpha and theta/beta ratios. The ADHD groups had more absolute and relative theta than the control group. Regionally, the ADHD groups had less relative alpha and more relative delta in posterior regions, and less relative beta in the frontal regions, than the control group. These differences were also apparent in both ratio measures. Only two significant topographic differences were found between the ADHD groups, with both of these being less deviant from normality in the ADHD+ODD group than the ADHD group. These results indicate that EEG correlates of ADHD are not clouded by the presence of comorbid ODD, which suggests possible applications in clinical practice.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine whether EEG activity in specific bands correlated with the core behavioral symptoms of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD). Sixty boys diagnosed with AD/HD Combined type and 60 age-matched male controls participated in this study. An EEG was recorded during an eyes-closed resting condition and relative power estimates in the delta, theta, alpha, and beta bands, and the theta/beta ratio, were calculated. The EEG measures of the AD/HD group were converted to z scores relative to the controls, and these were correlated with scores on the Conners' Rating Scale obtained from a parent. The AD/HD group had global increases in theta activity and the theta/beta ratio, increased frontal delta, with reduced global alpha and frontal beta activity. Frontal theta activity correlated with inattention, the theta/beta ratio correlated with hyperactivity-impulsivity, and both measures correlated with a Combined type diagnosis. EEG power anomalies in AD/HD are associated with specific symptom clusters in the disorder.  相似文献

This longitudinal study of resting EEGs compared patients with senile dementia of Alzheimer type (SDAT) and healthy controls at 3 times of testing over a 2.5 year period. Measures included the mean EEG frequency as well as the percentage of power in alpha, beta, theta, and delta frequency bands obtained from power spectral analysis. The values from occipital to vertex derivations were averaged for the left and right hemispheres. In healthy older adults delta increased, and both beta and mean frequency decreased over the study period; there was no significant change in theta or alpha. In the SDAT group, all 5 EEG measures changed significantly; there were increases in delta and theta, and decreases in beta, alpha and mean frequency. Theta percentage power distinguished between all 4 stages of dementia (control, mild, moderate and severe). Other EEG measures discriminated only at certain stages. In the mild stage of SDAT theta, beta and mean frequency were already different from control values. In the moderate stage, these differences persisted, and alpha became different. Delta was the last to change, and in the present small sample of those with severe SDAT the difference had not yet reached significance.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the presence of EEG clusters within a sample of children with the combined type of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS: Subjects consisted of 184 boys with ADHD and 40 age-matched controls. EEG was recorded from 21 sites during an eyes-closed resting condition and Fourier transformed to provide estimates for total power, and relative power in the delta, theta, alpha and beta bands, and for the theta/beta ratio. Factor analysis was used to group sites into 3 regions, covering frontal, central and posterior regions. These data were subjected to cluster analysis. RESULTS: Three distinct EEG clusters of children with ADHD were found. These were characterized by (a) increased slow wave activity and deficiencies of fast wave, (b) increased high amplitude theta with deficiencies of beta activity, and (c) an excess beta group. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that children with ADHD do not constitute a homogenous group in EEG profile terms. This has important implications for studies of the utility of EEG in the diagnosis of ADHD. Efforts aimed at using EEG as a tool to discriminate ADHD children from normals must recognize the variability within the ADHD population if such a tool is to be valid and reliable in clinical practice.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated EEG abnormalities in adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD). METHODS: Fifteen AD/HD subjects and 15 control subjects participated in this study. All subjects were between 14 and 17 years of age. The EEG was recorded from 19 electrode sites and was analysed to provide estimates of both absolute and relative power in the delta, theta, alpha and beta bands. Theta/alpha and theta/beta ratio coefficients were also calculated. RESULTS: Across the scalp, AD/HD subjects were characterised by greater absolute delta and theta activity, and an increased theta/beta ratio compared to controls. No group differences were found for either absolute or relative alpha, or absolute beta. However, AD/HD subjects demonstrated a reduction in relative beta activity in the posterior regions. CONCLUSIONS: The AD/HD group showed significant deviations from normal CNS development, in particular in posterior regions. This supports previous suggestions that individuals with an EEG profile that is not indicative of a maturational lag are more likely to have AD/HD during adolescence. SIGNIFICANCE: This is the first study to investigate EEG abnormalities in adolescents with AD/HD during an eyes-closed resting condition.  相似文献

Objective: Studies correlating electroencephalographic (EEG) data and cognitive performance in Down's syndrome (DS) showed conflicting results. The aims of this study were to investigate the sources of EEG rhythms in adults with DS at three dimensional representation of current source density (CSD) using exact/standard Low Resolution Electromagnetic Tomography (e/sLORETA), and their correlation with cognitive performance. Methods: Twenty‐five adults with DS underwent a neuropsychological battery and 5 min of resting, eye‐closed 29‐channel EEG were recorded. After e/sLORETA analysis, data were compared with those from age and gender‐matching control subjects as following: absolute and relative power in delta (1–3 Hz), theta (4–7 Hz), alpha1 (8–9 Hz), alpha2 (10–12 Hz), beta1 (13–18 Hz), beta2 (19–21 Hz), beta3 (22–30 Hz); alpha and theta bands adjusted to individual alpha peak frequency (IAF). Current source activities in DS group in regions showing significant differences compared with controls underwent correlation analysis with psychometric scores. Results: In DS, IAF was shifted to lower frequencies and correlated positively with Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale and Mini‐Mental State examination. Compared with controls, DS showed increased CSD in: theta, alpha‐1, and beta1 classical bands and in IAF‐adjusted bands, while relative alpha2 was decreased. A negative correlation between cognitive performance and theta/alpha CSD in the right frontal lobe and right posterior cingulate cortex was found. The relative alpha2 correlated positively with cognitive tests. Conclusions: Increased CSD in DS, correlating with cognitive performance, for both slow and fast rhythms suggests involving of cortical and subcortical mechanisms. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was found to be characterized by a deviant pattern of electrocortical activity during resting state, particularly increased theta and decreased beta activity. The first objective of the present study is to confirm whether individuals with slow alpha peak frequency contribute to the finding of increased theta activity in ADHD. The second objective is to explore the relation between resting-state brain oscillations and specific cognitive functions. From 49 boys with ADHD and 49 healthy control boys, resting-state EEG during eyes open and eyes closed was recorded, and a variety of cognitive tasks were administered. Theta and beta power and theta/beta ratio were calculated using both fixed frequency bands and individualized frequency bands. As expected, theta/beta ratio, calculated using fixed frequency bands, was significantly higher in ADHD children than control children. However, this group effect was not significant when theta/beta ratio was assessed using individualized frequency bands. No consistent relation was found between resting-state brain oscillations and cognition. The present results suggest that previous findings of increased theta/beta ratio in ADHD may reflect individuals with slow alpha peak frequencies in addition to individuals with true increased theta activity. Therefore, the often reported theta/beta ratio in ADHD can be considered a non-specific measure combining several distinct neurophysiological subgroups such as frontal theta and slowed alpha peak frequencies. Future research should elucidate the functional role of resting-state brain oscillations by investigating neurophysiological subgroups, which may have a clearer relation to cognitive functions than single frequency bands.  相似文献

10 male volunteers, right-handers, mean age 30.4 years, were recorded in four successive sequences: under 'eyes closed' conditions, right and then left hemisphere, followed by an 'eyes open' situation with visual attention fixed on a cartoon, right and then left hemisphere recordings. Each EEG recording was made simultaneously over 16 EEG channels for each hemisphere, according to a protocol previously described as well as Fourier analysis and EEG mapping on a minicomputer (HP 5451 C, HP 1000). Each EEG recording was stored on a cartography data base, and 90 maps could be drawn from 10 spectral parameters applied to the raw EEG and 5 frequency bands. Permutation paired Fisher tests were applied to three main EEG parameters: mean centroid frequencies, RMS amplitudes in microvolts and relative (%) amplitudes. Activation of EEG in the 'eyes open' situation during visual fixation was found compared to the 'eyes closed' situation: decreasing dominant EEG frequency and low delta and theta mean frequencies, no change in a mean alpha frequency; increasing fast mean beta frequencies, together with a major decrease in theta, alpha, beta 1 amplitudes, and a concomitant increase in raw EEG, delta and beta 2 amplitudes. Finally, the percent alpha amplitude was decreased when other percent amplitudes were increased in delta, theta, beta 1 and beta 2 frequency bands. A symmetry between hemispheres was observed in the 'eyes closed' situation. Averaged EEG maps between subjects illustrate these findings, especially relative (%) alpha amplitude maps and also maps of coefficients of resonance of the alpha rhythm.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated EEG differences between children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) and matched control subjects, with either normal or low IQs. METHODS: Twenty normal-IQ and 20 low-IQ children with AD/HD, and 40 age-, IQ- and sex-matched control subjects participated in this study. EEG was recorded from 21 sites during an eyes-closed resting condition and Fourier transformed to provide estimates for total power, and absolute and relative power in the delta, theta, alpha and beta bands. RESULTS: Children with AD/HD had increased theta activity with decreased levels of alpha and beta activity compared to control subjects. IQ was not found to impact on the EEG. No significant differences were found between subjects with normal and low IQs, with the low- and high-IQ AD/HD groups having similar EEG profiles. CONCLUSIONS: Low-IQ children with AD/HD have similar EEG abnormalities to those with normal IQs, and IQ does not appear to impact on EEG power measures. SIGNIFICANCE: This is the first study to investigate EEG differences in low-IQ children with and without AD/HD.  相似文献

L-tryptophan: effects on daytime sleep latency and the waking EEG   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The effects of L-tryptophan (4 g) on the waking EEG and daytime sleep were studied in a group of 20 normal adults. Subjects were assigned to a morning or afternoon group, and data were collected on two occasions, after L-tryptophan and after placebo, assigned in a counterbalanced order. L-Tryptophan significantly reduced sleep latency without altering nap sleep stages and elevated plasma total and free tryptophan levels. EEGs were digitized on-line and later analyzed for changes in 5 frequency bands: 16-40 c/sec (beta), 13.0-15.5 c/sec (sigma), 8.0-12.5 c/sec (alpha), 4.0-7.5 c/sec (theta) and 0.5-3.5 c/sec (delta). During waking EEGs, L-tryptophan significantly increased alpha time, theta time, and theta intensity and significantly decreased alpha frequency. No wave bands were altered during sleep. L-Tryptophan is an effective daytime hypnotic which can facilitate sleep onset at clock times which do not coincide with biological sleep times. The hypnotic effects may be mediated by lowering arousal level during the awake state, thus setting the stage for more rapid sleep onset.  相似文献
