BackgroundCausal attributions are central to the understanding of public reactions to disability (that is, disability-related stigma). Research shows that culture and ethnicity were found to play a significant role in both causal attributions of disability and disability-related stigma.Disability-related stigma was found to influence physical and mental health. Nevertheless, to the best of our knowledge, the relationships linking culture, causal attributions of disability and disability-related stigma, have not been previously examined.ObjectiveThe study examined whether causal attributions (natural, mystic, punitive and emotional) to a specific disability-visual impairments - mediate the relationship between culture and stigma towards individuals with visual impairments.MethodsA quota sample comprised of 305 university and college students was drawn. Data were collected via a self-reported questionnaire.ResultsThe main findings indicated that emotional and punitive causal attribution to visual impairments mediated the relationship between culture and visual impairments-stigma; Israeli Arab-Palestinians had a higher tendency to attribute higher levels of punitive and emotional causes to visual impairments compared to Israeli Jews. Higher levels of punitive and emotional attributed causes for visual impairments were correlated with higher levels of visual impairments-stigma. Israeli Arab-Palestinians have a higher tendency to attribute visual impairments to mystic causes compared to Israeli Jews. However, this type of perceived causation was unrelated to visual impairments-stigma.ConclusionsInterventions to reduce visual impairments-stigma should focus on misconceptions concerning causation. It is especially important to design culturally sensitive interventions for visual impairments stigma reduction among Israeli Arab-Palestinians, which will focus on de-psychologizing visual impairments.  相似文献

This paper considers the role of culture in rural health, suggesting that the concept and its impacts are insufficiently understood and studied. It reviews some of the ways that culture has been considered in (rural) health, and states that culture is either used ambiguously and broadly – for example, suggesting that there is a rural culture, or narrowly – indeed perhaps interchangeably with ethnicity, for example Aboriginal culture as a unity. The paper notes that, although culture is a dynamic social concept, it has been adopted into a biomedical research paradigm as though it is fixed. Culture is often treated as though it is something that can be addressed simplistically, for example, through cultural sensitivity education. Authors suggest that culture is an unaddressed ‘elephant in the room’ in rural health, and that exploring cultural differences and beliefs and facing up to cultural differences are vital in understanding and addressing rural health and health system challenges.  相似文献

The culture audit, which has five phases--needs awareness, diagnosis, planning, action, and evaluation--is a critical tool for easing cultural transformation in healthcare organizations. The objective of the audit--usually conducted by outsiders--is to help leaders better understand the current culture and adapt the culture to enhance organizational performance. Most leaders contract with an outsider to facilitate the needs exploration process, often with the guidelines of an advisory team of managers and staff. During the diagnosis phase, the audit team chooses the data-gathering methods, collects and analyzes the data, and develops a model of the culture. The third phase of the culture audit involves planning interventions. Once leaders have a clear picture of their organization's culture, they must ascertain whether the culture will enhance or impede the changes demanded by healthcare reform and an increasingly competitive environment. During the action phase, the culture begins to move toward its desired future. This transition generally requires change in all the organization's systems, including technology, structure, rewards, decision making, budgeting, and managing. Finally, the organization assesses the impact of its culture on its performance. Using the original diagnosis as a baseline and the organization performance goals, the evaluation process maps the changing culture against the benchmark beginning and the goals.  相似文献

目的:探索简捷细胞培养方法并观察该方法对癌细胞特性的影响。方法:将复苏的OC-3-VGH卵巢癌细胞株不经洗涤直接移至细胞培养瓶,加入10ml RPMI-1640培养液,放入培养箱,余同传统方法,观察细胞生长情况;取细胞悬液,以细胞数4×10^6/ml,0.2ml/只接种至BALB/c雌性裸小鼠皮下,2个月后处死,取肿瘤组织制片,并与传统培养方法结果进行比较。结果:两种方法培养的细胞均生长活跃,皮下接种7d左右,裸鼠长出肿瘤,组织学检查未见明显差异。结论:改良细胞培养方法减少了传统方法的繁琐步骤,方便细胞培养。  相似文献
