Event-related potentials were measured in a task that combined the classic selective attention paradigm with memory search and mental rotation paradigms. Subjects were required to attend to stimulus letters in one color and to ignore stimuli in a different color. Within the attended category subjects searched for target letters from a prememorized set (the memory set) and indicated whether they were presented normally or in mirror-image. Letters in all stimulus categories were presented randomly in either their upright position or rotated over 60 degrees, 120 degrees, or 180 degrees. The event-related potentials showed that the earliest effect of attending to color was a positivity at the anterior electrodes and a negativity at Oz (onset about 150 ms), followed by the enhancement of a central N2 component (N2b, onset about 220 ms). The early effect is thought to reflect selective processing of elementary stimulus features, the later N2b the covert orienting of attention. A later, prolonged central negativity elicited by attended stimuli covaried with the duration of the memory search process. Target detection resulted in a parietal P3b component, and also in an earlier negativity (in the range approximately 200-300 ms) to both attended and unattended targets, suggesting an early preattentive target classification. There were two effects of the rotation of stimuli. First there was an early occipital effect (about 200-300 ms), irrespective of attention and stimulus categories. It was argued that this effect reflected the preattentive identification of the orientation of the stimulus letters. A later (onset about 350-400 ms) parietal effect consisted of an increase in negativity as a function of the angle over which letters were rotated. This prolonged negativity had a later onset latency than the search-related negativity, and was restricted to the event-related potentials to target letters in the attended input channel. It was suggested that this component is the manifestation of a mental rotation process. It was argued that rotation-related negativity and memory search-related activity reflect operations in distinct working memory subsystems.  相似文献

The analysis of event-related potentials was used in two experiments to investigate the structure of information processing in a task in which subjects selectively attended to letter size (Experiment 1) or a conjunction of letter size and color (Experiment 2) and searched for target letters within the attended stimulus category. The event-related potentials showed that selective attention to letter size resulted in the enhancement of a central N2b component (onset about 200 ms), which was assumed to reflect feature nonspecific orienting of attention. When attention was directed to conjunctions of letter size and color an earlier effect was found (onset about 150 ms) consisting of positivity at the anterior electrodes and negativity at OZ. This earlier effect was assumed to reflect feature-specific selective processing. Although the early effect showed a hierarchical pattern of results, in which the effect of attending to size was contingent on the relevance of the color attribute, the N2b showed a more independent pattern of results, in which the relevance of either the color or the size attribute resulted in an enhancement of this component, independent of the relevance of the other attribute. An increase in the duration of the memory search process resulted in a prolonged negativity with an onset of about 200 ms which was maximal at CZ. In both experiments the initial phase of this negativity was also found in the event-related potentials to the unattended stimulus categories, suggesting that the search process was initiated nonselectively and terminated after the selection cues were identified. Detection of attended target letters resulted in a parietal P3b component. In both experiments there was an earlier effect discriminating targets and nontargets in the range 200-300 ms.  相似文献

A hypothesis of overfocused attention in obsessive-compulsive disorder was investigated by measuring auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) during a selective attention task. Unmedicated patients (n= 18) with this disorder showed significantly larger attention-related processing negativity (PN), with earlier onset and longer duration, than did normal controls (n= 15). In the N200 region (160–250 ms), PN was larger in patients with fewer nonspecific neurological soft signs. This task, however, did not yield any group differences in mismatch negativity (N2a) or classical N200 (N2b). P300 amplitudes for attended targets were smaller for patient than normal groups, but the reverse was true for P300 and positive slow wave amplitudes for unattended nontargets. Collectively, these ERP abnormalities suggest a misallocation of cognitive resources. Because of the importance of the frontal lobe in the control of selective attention, PN enhancement in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder may reflect hyperactivation of this region. This conceptualization is consistent with recent functional neuroimaging findings.  相似文献

Event-related potentials were recorded from 80 participants ranging in age from 7 to 24 years while they attended selectively to stimuli with a specified color (red or blue) in an attempt to detect the occurrence of target stimuli. Color attention effects were identified as frontal selection positivity (FSP; 140–275 ms), selection negativity (SN; 150–300 ms), and N2b (200–450 ms), whereas target detection was reflected in P3b (300–700 ms). There were age-related decreases in the latencies of FSP, N2b, and P3b that paralleled decreases in reaction time and error rates. Also, the SN amplitude increased with advancing age, whereas both N2b and P3b showed changes in scalp topography. These results represent neurophysiological evidence that the efficiency of visual selective processes increases during childhood and adolescence. Developmental growth may take place at both relatively early and late levels of visual selective information processing.  相似文献

The present study examined long-term repetition effects on human auditory event-related potentials (ERPs). ERPs were recorded from subjects performing the same multidimensional auditory selective attention task on six separate occasions spaced one week apart. The task required subjects to attend to tones that varied along the dimensions of location (L), pitch (P), and duration (D) and to detect prespecified target (L + P + D +) combinations of these attributes. Processing negativity (PN) between 100-400 ms did not change in amplitude or onset latency as a function of repeated experience with the task. In contrast, two measures of "very late" PN were reduced with practice. Specifically, the location effect measured over the 400-700-ms epoch was significant only for Weeks 1 and 2, and the separation of the L + P + D- ERP from other D- ERPs, measured over the 700-1000-ms epoch, was significantly reduced from Week 1 to Week 2. A late negative component (700-1000 ms) elicited by correctly identified targets increased between Weeks 1 and 2, consistent with subjects adopting the strategy of rehearsal of the target itself rather than the L + P + D- standard. P2 amplitude increased significantly for all standards, possibly due to decreased latency jitter in later weeks. N1 latency became significantly shorter over weeks, reflecting either increasing confidence in stimulus discrimination with repeated testing or the overlapping of an unchanging N1 with an increasing P2.  相似文献

Event-related potentials (ERPs) for tone pips from attended and unattended sources, which varied on discriminability, were compared with ERPs for the same stimuli recorded during performance of a visual task. This comparison revealed that Nd, the negative shift of attended relative to unattended ERPs, consisted of three components: a negativity in the attended ERP from 100 to 270 ms, a positivity in the unattended ERP from 170 ms to the end of the epoch, and a second negativity in the attended ERP from 270 to 700 ms. In general, the later onset of early Nd with more difficult between-source discriminations could be attributed to the later onset of the positivity in unattended ERPs. A number of hypotheses were advanced for the origin of the unattended positivity: the suppression of the later of two negative components in the 100–220-ms range, an enhanced P2 component, an endogenous positivity, or the resolution of a protracted negativity elicited by preceding attended stimuli.  相似文献

The nature of error detection as manifested by the error-related negativity was examined in both a Sternberg memory search task and a visual search task. Both tasks were performed in conditions with consistent or varied stimulus-response mapping and loads of three or six letters. After subjects were trained extensively in all conditions, they performed the tasks throughout the night without sleeping. The data suggest that the effectiveness of error detection decreases over time because of a decrease in the quality of perceptual processing. Error detection also suffers when performance requires more search-related resources. In both cases, the representation of the correct response is compromised. These results indicate that error detection depends on the same perceptual and cognitive processes that are required for correct performance.  相似文献

Event-related potentials were recorded from normal subjects in an auditory selective attention task. Targets were rare longer (170-ms) tones of a designated pitch, embedded in a sequence of 100-ms standard tones. The effects of attention-modulated processing were evident in the event-related potentials elicited by the standards. Those to relevant standards were similar for easy (1000 Hz vs. 2000 Hz) and hard (1000 Hz vs. 1030 Hz) pitch separations, and were more negative frontocentrally than those to irrelevant standards. Difference waveforms (attended minus unattended standards) revealed Nd, a negative deflection that was earlier in latency for the easy task (onset, 120 ms; peak, 250 ms) than for the hard task (onset, 250 ms; peak, 350 ms). The speed of detection of the deviant longer tones was insensitive to the attention-modulated processes indexed by Nd. Median reaction time did not differ between tasks, although there were more misses and false alarms in the hard task (and nearly all of the latter were to the irrelevant longer tones). Neither direction of attention nor task difficulty affected the latency of mismatch negativity, N2, or P3 (as identified in difference waveforms: attended or unattended longer tones minus their respective standards). The data suggest that performance was guided by two independent but converging processes, automatic mismatch detection of the longer tone and attention-modulated processing of pitch, followed by selection of response.  相似文献

In the present experiment ERPs were recorded to colored stimulus bars (red or blue) which were randomly presented at one out of eight different spatial locations on a visual display. The locations were situated on a hemi-circle around the fixation point, with four locations lying in each visual half-field. The subjects were instructed to attend to one stimulus location (the most peripheral left or right location: the relevant location) in a focused attention condition and to all four locations within the same visual half-field in a divided attention condition, and were instructed to respond to stimulus bars in one color presented at the relevant location(s). In the focused attention condition, spatial attention resulted in early positivity in the P1 latency range (ca. 100-175 ms), followed by a prolonged negativity in the N1, P2, and N2 latency range (ca. 175-350 ms). These effects generalized to locations in the same visual half-field as the relevant location. The effect of attending and responding to the target color consisted of a number of different effects. An early anterior positivity, occipital negativity was observed for the relevant location and for locations in the same visual half-field as the relevant location, but not for the locations in the opposite visual field. A later central negativity (N2b) appeared to be confined to the relevant location and one location adjacent to it. Finally, a late parietal positivity (P3b) was exclusively evoked by target stimuli at the relevant location. In the divided attention condition, the ERPs evoked by stimuli presented at each of the four locations within the relevant visual half-field showed increased early positivity (enhancing P1 amplitude) as compared to the ERPs to stimuli in the opposite (irrelevant) visual half-field. The early color selection effect was also found to all stimuli within the relevant half-field, but the N2b component was evoked both by stimuli within the relevant half-field and by stimuli at the location in the irrelevant half-field closest to the midline. The P3b was present to target stimuli at the three most lateral positions within the relevant half-field but it was absent to the relevant location closest to the midline. The data suggested that the attentional spotlight encompassed at least approximately 2 degrees in the focused attention condition, and an efficient selection by visual half-field in the divided attention situation.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

How do event related potentials (ERPs) reflecting auditory processing develop across adolescence? Such development was described for five ERP components in four groups of 11 healthy participants with mean ages of 10, 14, 17, and 21 years. Data from 19 sites during diffuse (passive) and focused (discrimination) attention in a three-tone oddball were analyzed to see how ERP loci varied with age for tone type attention condition, and for four types of difference waves reflecting nontarget and target comparison. Age interacted with site for most components. P1 loci sensitive to rare tones moved postoriorly and N1 loci lost their right bias in early puberty. The P2 loci did not move anterior to Council adulthood N2 amplitude, sensative to attention condition, developed a frontal focus by 17 years. Right biased P3 loci moved lo the midline with focused attention similarly in all age groups. Difference waves developed in three stages; In 10-years-old participants early deflection (<150 ms) were diffusely distributed; in mid adolescent participants, the main frontal negative component (150-300 ms) became well formed and lost an earlier right bias: and for participants 17 years old and older, the late positive complex developed a right bias in target-derived waves. Latency decreases for early frontal components were marked in participants 10–14 years old and for later posterior components m participants 14–17 years old. Major developments appeared at the onset of adolescence in early stimulus selection processes and during adolescence in the in the differential use of this information (N2- and P3-like latencies).  相似文献

To investigate whether salient visual singletons capture attention when they appear outside the current endogenous attentional focus, we measured the N2pc component as a marker of attentional capture in a visual search task where target or nontarget singletons were presented at locations previously cued as task-relevant, or in the uncued irrelevant hemifield. In two experiments, targets were either defined by color or by a combination of color and shape. The N2pc was elicited both for attended singletons and for singletons on the uncued side, demonstrating that focused endogenous attention cannot prevent attentional capture by salient unattended visual events. However, N2pc amplitudes were larger for attended and unattended singletons that shared features with the current target, suggesting that top-down task sets modulate the capacity of visual singletons to capture attention both within and outside the current attentional focus.  相似文献

To investigate the time course of emotional expression processing, we recorded ERPs to facial stimuli. The first task was to discriminate emotional expressions. Enhanced negativity of the face-specific N170 was elicited by emotional as opposed to neutral faces, followed by the occipital negativity (240-340 ms poststimulus). The second task was to classify face gender. Here, N170 was unaffected by the emotional expression. However, emotional expression effect was expressed in the anterior positivity (160-250 ms poststimulus) and subsequent occipital negativity (240-340 ms poststimulus). Results support the thesis that structural encoding relevant to gender recognition and simultaneous expression analysis are independent processes. Attention modulates facial emotion processing 140-185 ms poststimulus. Involuntary differentiation of facial expression was observed later (160-340 ms poststimulus), suggesting unintentional attention capture.  相似文献

The event-related potential (ERP) effects of visual spatial attention and letter target detection for stimuli presented against a (nonisoluminant) dark background or against an isoluminant grey background were investigated. The goal was to study how the perceptual variable of luminance would influence early ERP reflections of selective attention. Such effects could further substantiate the claim that selective attention operates at the level of early perceptual processing and could provide evidence regarding the role of different visual routes in selective attention. Isoluminance increased the peak latency of the early ERP deflections (NP80, PI, and NI) by 40–50 ms. The ERP effects of spatial attention. consisting of PI and NI amplitude enhancements, were similarly delayed by isoluminance. supporting the idea that early selective processing is strongly dependent on bottom-up perceptual processing. P300 latency and reaction time were delayed by 70–75 ms, the additional delay probably reflecting that isoluminance affected decision processes in addition to perceptual processes. Isoluminance left the scalp topographies of the early ERP deflections largely unaffected, although a slight shift of the NI topography in the isoluminant condition toward more inferior lateral posterior regions of the scalp could have reflected an increased contribution from ventral (occipitotemporal) brain areas. Relative to nontarget letters, targels presented at both attended and unattended spatial positions elicited an early contralaterally dominant lateral occipitotemporal negativity (N2pc). This ERP component is proposed to reflect an early, partly automatic process of template matching, consistent with indications from spatiotemporal dipole modelling that the N2pc was generated in inferior occipitotemporal brain regions.  相似文献

Event-related potentials (ERPs) were used to investigate the effects of visual-spatial orienting on selective neural processing in boys with learning disabilities. Twenty-seven 8-12 year old boys were classified into four groups depending on whether or not they had a reading disability or attention deficit disorder. Event-related potentials were recorded over the left and right occipital, central, and frontal cortical regions. The behavioral task required the subjects 1) to rapidly switch their attention from the center to the periphery of the visual field (spatial component), and 2) to selectively respond to a target versus a nontarget flash when the target was presented in the relevant visual field (nonspatial component). The amplitude of two ERP components was enhanced in response to relevant as compared to irrelevant stimuli. The enhancement of an early negative occipital-central component, which peaked 180-200 ms following targets (N1), indicated that selective neural processing associated with spatial attention could be switched in 600 ms. This enhancement of N1 was greater in boys with than without a reading disability, which implies that reading disability is associated with enhanced spatial attention. The enhancement of a later positive component, which peaked 300-340 ms following targets (P3), suggested that nonspatial target selection was reduced in boys with a reading disability, particularly over the left occipital hemisphere. Target relevance and reading disability also influenced trial-to-trial variability in the ERP waveform. The effects of reading disability on event-related potentials did not vary as a function of attention deficit disorder, indicating that these two disorders are distinct.  相似文献

Event-related potential (ERP) correlates of semantic and non-semantic mismatch in the 200-400ms time interval were dissociated. Twelve subjects observed pairs of single letters and digits presented serially, and decided whether the colour (blue or red) or the category membership (letter or number) of the second item in a pair matched the first one. In both tasks mismatch elicited central N2b components (220ms peak latency in the colour matching task, and 280ms peak latency in the category matching task). Furthermore, in the category matching task a centro-parietal negativity (N400) emerged. The topography of the N2b effect was clearly distinct from that of the N400 effect. Analysis of event-related spectral perturbations confirmed that N400 time-range effects were specific to category matching. We conclude that while the N400 effect is a specific marker of semantic mismatch, the N2b effect is a general correlate of detecting mismatch between the representations of task-relevant features.  相似文献

Event-related potentials were recorded from 11 subjects after ingesting caffeine (250 mg) or placebo. Subjects were instructed to attend selectively to stimuli with a specified color (red or blue) in order to react to the occurrence of a target within the attended category. Reaction times revealed faster responses for the caffeine condition, whereas no differences in strategy were observed. Color attention effects were identified as frontal selection positivity, occipital selection negativity, and N2b, whereas target detection was reflected in P3b. Effects of treatment were found as a more positive-going frontal P2 component in the caffeine condition. In addition, an interaction between attention and treatment could be observed on the N2b component. This pattern of results suggests that caffeine yields a higher overall arousal level, more profound processing of both attended and unattended information, and an acceleration of motor processes.  相似文献

Exogenous attention has been extensively studied in vision but little is known about its behavioural and neural correlates in touch. To investigate this, non-informative tactile cues were followed after 800 ms by tactile targets and participants either detected targets or discriminated their location. Responses were slowed for targets at cued compared to uncued locations (i.e. inhibition of return (IOR)) only in the detection task. Concurrently recorded ERPs showed enhanced negativity for targets at uncued compared to cued locations at the N80 component and this modulation overlapped with the P100 component but only for the detection task indicating IOR may, if anything, be linked to attentional modulations at the P100. Further, cue-target interval analysis showed an enhanced anterior negativity contralateral to the cue side in both tasks, analogous to the anterior directed attention negativity (ADAN) previously only reported during endogenous orienting.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of display and memory load on the event-related potentials (ERPs) in a visual letter search task combined with selection by color. ERPs were recorded from 10 adult subjects, when they were required to judge if test stimuli, which consisted of a horizontal array of five colored alphabets, contained target letters defined by shape and color. The results showed that the increase of display or memory load caused the enlargement of three different negativities. The first and second display load effects were observed in the ERPs at midline central electrode (Cz) between 240-280 ms latency range, and in a posterior-distributed negativity that was the maximum at about 650 ms after the stimulus onset. The third was the anterior-central negativity that was the largest at Cz about 550 ms after the stimulus onset. In contrast to the first two effects, this negativity was enhanced by display or memory load. In discussion, a tentative linkage between these ERP changes and two slave systems of working memory (phonological loop and visuo-spatial sketchpad) was proposed.  相似文献

Subcomponents of the N200 component of the event-related brain potential believed to be differentially sensitive to involuntary and voluntary cognitive processes were examined. Nonpatients (N = 131) identified initially by the Chapman and Depue research scales and classified later on the basis of diagnostic symptom clusters and family psychiatric history provided converging evidence for an intact mismatch negativity subcomponent. In contrast, the N2b subcomponent distinguished several groups of subjects. Results suggested abnormal voluntary cognitive processing, perhaps reflecting compensatory efforts in subjects at risk for or manifesting psychopathology, particularly those showing negative symptoms.  相似文献

ERPs and performance were measured in divided and focussed attention visual search tasks. In focussed attention tasks, to-be-attended and to-be-ignored letters were presented simultaneously. We varied display load, mapping conditions and display size. RT, P3b-latency and negativity in the ERP associated with controlled search all increased with display load. Each of these measures showed selectivity of controlled search, in that they decreased with focussing of attention. An occipital N230, on the other hand, was not sensitive to focussing of attention, but was primarily affected by display load. ERPs to both attended and unattended targets in focussed attention conditions showed and N2 compared to nontargets, suggesting that both automatic and controlled letter classifications are possible. These effects were not affected by display size. Consistent mapping resulted in shorter RT and P3b-latency in divided attention conditions, compared to varied mapping conditions, but had no effect in focussed attention conditions.  相似文献
