Abstract: | Two hundred seventy nasopharyngeal aspirates were tested in duplicate with the Ortho Diagnostics, Inc. (Raritan, N.J.), respiratory syncytial virus antigen enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The test was sensitive (80 to 82%) and specific (96%) when compared with cell culture. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay detected seven antigen-positive specimens not among the 71 specimens that were positive for respiratory syncytial virus in cell culture. A blocking test confirmed those specimens as true positives (specificity, 100%). |
